Whenever you post something, I've got no idea what it's going to be about or what category it falls into, but I do know that it's gonna be a damn good story and probably the most interesting thing I'll watch all week. Take care of yourself, rest up, and whatever you decide to cover next, you better believe I'll be there to watch it right away.

I think the best example of this story telling was the Musicstore MP3 Jukebox. The best part wasn't even the video, but the fact that the video reached someone who actually did slave away in those meetings with a half-baked budget and finding out that you pretty much called it right. I want to support this channel getting bigger because it means there's an an equally bigger chance of finding those people who were a part of these untold stories.

*This* . This is what I'm talking about in my above comment - I think it would be interesting to talk to the people who were actually there when all this stuff was being developed. I am one of those people; worked for several software companies in The Valley in the 90s up through the Dot-Com Bomb. It was a fascinating period of tech history, with a lot of interesting characters and personalities involved, all kind of riding a run-away go-cart with no steering and no brakes, making it up as we went along, and gambling on pretty much anything in the hopes it would "hit big"...

100%. I don't care about that kind of device at all. They were all terrible, and the music industry pretty much destroyed any possibility of having nice things. But, the magic of the Internet is that _everyone_ is here, and if you put out a video about something and leave some blanks, somebody will show up that can fill in those blanks. And THAT is how you tap the entire worldwide community to write the history of tech. The stuff that nobody who was there, thought to write down. And nobody who wasn't there, knows about. That stuff is priceless. The stories of the time, the zeitgeist, the politics -- internal to a company, and industry-wide. What it felt like to be at the dawn of a new age...

Engineer interviews. If you can find the grey beards who made this stuff I promise there is a story worth telling inside each one. You bond with the engineer over the fact that you have this rare thing they made. If they don't agree to a live interview you can at least ask some questions and have an inside perspective. I really enjoy hearing from the people who make things because they are often invisible. They get no 15 minutes of fame despite their products being a household name. You can offer them that recognition and a chance to say whatever they wish they could say to people about the thing.

I couldn’t take any more, so off the hospital New Year’s Day. The surgeon thought easy in & out home for cocktails; he didn’t take into account it was me he was dealing with. So complications ensued & I received a bigger scar than normal; no cocktails for the surgeon. The best thing to come out of it for me was four weeks off work. Silver linings eh.

And if there’s own item that really symbolizes the world of retro tech is it’s CRTs. I’ve recommended your channel to friends and the I tend to describe you is you like to find some weird gadget from the past and you tell a story about it and speculate about how it came to be. Also, idk if it means much but sending you lots of love. Long time fan and you’ve grown into one of my favorite creators. Also I had a dream about you the other day. We were stuck on a train together for 20 hours. You had a laptop from 1983 and were upset you couldn’t find somewhere to plug in. One of the few dreams I’ve had in my life about a KZreadr. And then when one (well, me, at least, certainly) medicates and finally sees beyond the symptoms the hyperfocus becomes a symptom more that a gift. I mean, it's great that don't dread/procrastinate/avoid my job (that was my passion and calling until "the man" started defining when I do) anymore, I'd prefer that I not get so into it that my entire day flies by. Sure, that happened to some degree before when I got into hyperfocus proper (which I did most days after I got beyond the procrastination and found the focus to actually BEGIN), but now it's like scary bad. Like 6:30 and everyone is signing off, I notice "I should do laundry, or dishes, or whatever" - consciously "nah &*# it I HAVE to finish this task" 3:00,4:00 am "I'm going to wake up in this office chair if I don't hit bed". 9am/10am and I'm not even waking up with enough time to bath. My dog is feeling neglected because his walks have gone from 10+km a day dividided into two sessions to like 2 or 3km all at once. I do NOTHING but work. I'm enthralled with work, but all of the other things I used to balance to some degree (haven't been one to leave dishes about or not start laundry until I don't have clothes to change into since HS - so a little over 2 decades ago) get NO time.

So happy that you're doing better Gravis, I'm proud to say that I'm supporting your channel and your ability to, you know, exist. I'll be strapped in for whatever you get going, "4 hour video on weird video tech" got me incredibly excited, so please follow your own path and treat yourself well! We'll be here!

Like others have said, the inconsistency is almost part of the charm. Follow your passion, excitement is contagious! I don't think any of your videos have really bored me, I know when I put your videos on I'm going to learn something fascinating or weird, be it the history of the thing you're talking about or the impact it had on you as a person. That's why I liked your Shareware Exitentialism video haha. How a device affects the owner is as much a story as how it got made!

There are a lot of rabbit holes in the realm of mid-high end editing setups. There was the Meridien system from AVID that used the Number Nine Nine Revolution IV (T2R/4) GPU on one of its PCI cards (EDC4). It used a strange dual PPC mac and x86 PC bios (with auto detection) and somehow the German company Formac was seemingly as a developer in the mix as well. When Number Nine was bought up, AVID still wanted to use the GPU on their cards (development was expensive and the hardware had to be sold for several years for it to break even)... but then they suddenly used the completely unknown "Peritek Borealis 3D". Turns out, that the Peritek Borealis 3D is actually the Number Nine Revolution IV (T2R/4). It originally released in 1998 was most likely produced well beyond 2003, maybe even until 2012, now by Peritek and later by Curtiss-Wright or maybe Rastergraf... the history is not really clear here. So in a nutshell: AVID most likely forced a completely outdated chip to be continued to be in production and as a result, the chip IP was handed around like a hot potato in the industry.

@@DEMENTO01 I was researching Apple QuickDraw 3D accelerators, when i stumbled over that card together with another enthusiast and we documented some of the findings (& a lot of speculation) on vogons. It is only the tip of the iceberg, i think. I can completely understand CRDs obsession with the realtime video editor/mixer industry. It's a niche with a *lot of money* behind it.

You've had quite a month! My wife had a similar experience with her appendicitis - it came and went for awhile until it finally got to the point where she went for medical attention. Where I live we have no public sewer or water so I'm responsible for my own septic system and fresh water well. At least the property taxes are low :)

Dude ☹ Thank you for the update. I'm sorry you've been through the wringer lately. My appendicitis was sudden. I was 11 ot 12. Friday night I felt fine. Saturday morning I felt like I was gonna die. My sisters thought I was trying to get out of helping with Saturday housework. Mom had to work overtime that day. She got home, my fever was *_106°F_*, she rushed me to the hospital and that's what it was. I was supposedly on the brink of rupture and went into emergency surgery.

Well glad they spotted it. I don't personally have much faith in the American Medical system much anymore. Seems like 3 out of 5 times I will get an incompetent doctor who refuses to do anything. Like CRD mentioned he went to the doctor and they didn't do anything until it got worse, unfortunately that seems to be the standard.

Thanks Gravis. I love your approach to storytelling, and I think you’ve only been getting better as you create more videos. I don’t know what the analytics and your own standards say, but I actually enjoyed your video on the development of the standard optical mouse more than most, so I think you’re doing something right there. But I bet I’d also enjoy it if you remade it in a manner that fits your goals better. The inclusion of those oral history clips was a great choice. I love listening to long interviews that just let the subjects talk, as long as they’re making sense. It’s good to know that those interviews are available online too. I understand if it’s not easy because of corporate NDAs and the difficulties of finding people, but I’d love to see you do interviews of your own for some of your future videos. Anyway, I’m gonna pledge. This is long overdue, and I can only spare a little, but I hope pledges like mine will add up. Edit: gonna pledge later. Patreon is stuck on the email part of the login page, on multiple devices. Odd. Edit 2: successfully pledged!

Your sense of humor, and being excited by some of the same weird stuff we are, is why I keep coming back. It could be about manhole covers, doesn't matter. Also, the product managers are still having those meetings, still making those mistakes -- they don' t know what the hell will sell -- so you will never run out of material. It might be more about software than hardware over time, but that's cool, too.

as a producer, it's fine to come up with material that's hours, days, weeks long. but then you need an editor to trim it all up into a format that you want. the editor must be impartial to your ideas, but also respect what you want to achieve. having said that, i've never once doubted the quality of your videos. i personally look to learn something new every time i watch a youtube video, and yours matches that 100% every time. so thanks for your work, i and hope all your struggles are resolved asap.
