Those analysis-based lessons are very much appreciated, and this one on modal jazz is no exception.

Thanks, glad to hear that!
Been listening to Kind of Blue at least once a week for nearly 50 years. It is the perfect album that never grows old. The one person that made the comment calling it ‘extremely boring’ must just be a soulless human.
I liked the staff across the bottom of the screens. Works well.
Just an awesome lesson high caliber knowledge thank you Mr Richie, thank you so much

Lol careful to not drop that amazing guitar. Thanks again for the lesson
What exactly defines a call vs answer? Is it simply the ordering, namely, call comes first and then answer? Or is there also melodic elements that differ between them, such as using more extensions and unstable tones in the call and resolving to the root and using other tones like the 6th which have a resolving feeling in dorian as well?
Shows how little you need if you know what you're doing. 👍

To use so little melodically and to hold interest is pure genius

garcias! More thing, do you think Miles' greatest concern was overall rhythmic texture of the whole band, not just his part, if that makes sense.

@@jonathanlechman Absolutely...rhythm/groove/swing comes first!
Great lesson. What would be the harmony/chords under the D Dorian Eb Dorian solos? Are they inversions of Dmin7/Ebmin7 or are there other diatonic chords used within the mode?

Dm7 and Ebm7

@@RichieZellon Ah. How come it’s Ebm7? In diatonic world it would be Em7. Is this a common progression in modal Jazz? Im7-bIIm7?

@@RichieZellon Hi again. Is it predominantly Im- IIm in modal progressions? Like in the D dorian phrases and solos, the chords you say would be Dm7-Em7 that are played under the solo. Or would the harmony be a little more adventurous? Or, is the idea to keep it minimal when playing accompaniment?
I think you've been to Bali...

Extremely boring, 2-chord music. Miles was good when he actually played some interesting notes over interesting chord changes - with Charley Parker.
