The pilot's name is Bradley F. Smith (Commander O-5, USN).. He was in the news in the '70s as one of the last vets to endure harsh treatment, after which the North Vietnamese decided it wasn't effective.
Quick Silver has to be a huge thrill no matter how many time Scott flies it! My dad and friends set up a small factory in SE Missouri building the first gyro copters. They built their first one an towed it behind a car to learn how to fly it, then put an engine on it. He stalled one in a turn and crashed it, but It didn't belong to him, so had to pay to replace it. The blade busted the football helmet he was wearing but he only got a lot of bruises and a concussion. They were wide open in those days. They had only built a few at that point, but they shut it down due to possibly lability issues.
Commander Bradley E. Smith, U.S. Navy (retired). Silver star (2), Legion of Merit,Distinguished Flying Cross (2), Bronze Star (3). POW. A true American hero. Thank you Garrett for sharing your time with Brad and his story. Thank you CMDR Smith for your service !!!!

Brad Smith was born in 1939 in Youngstown, Ohio. He began taking flying lessons at age 15 and already had his private pilot's license before he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 31, 1961. He was later selected for Naval Cadet Flight Training where he received his commission and wings in 1964. He was assigned to Attack Squadron VA-76 in February 1965, flying off the Aircraft Carriers USS Roosevelt, America, and Enterprise. Smith began flying combat missions in the A-4 Skyhawk in November 1965. He was forced to eject over North Vietnam while flying his 77th combat mission on March 25, 1966. The North Vietnamese captured LT Smith and held him as a Prisoner of War for the next 2,516 days, until his release during Operation Homecoming on February 12, 1973. After his return, Smith went back on flying status in the A-7 Corsair II. He flew from the USS Saratoga from 1974 to 1977, seeing duty off the coast of Lebanon. From 1979 to 1981, he flew from the USS Coral Sea in the Indian Ocean, including being on alert during the rescue attempt of the hostages held in Iran. Smith served as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer and as a Weapons System Test Pilot at the Pacific Missile Test Center at Point Mugu, California, from 1981 until his retirement from the Navy on August 31, 1985. After retirement, Brad worked for the defense contractor Lear Siegler before starting a Stained Glass business in Florida.

Congratulations Cleetus on owning an airport! Very happy for you. My mom & dad are Army Veterans. Dad kept his pilot skills up flying out of Servia Indiana on a Grass Strip. After the owner past, kids sold the place and the runways plowed up. Dad moved his plane to Wabash. Roy, the owner and his family lived at the airport. Part of his home was the FBO. Building your home, at your airport reminded me of that part of my childhood. I have land lots in Florida around Cape Coral. One is near an airport and was thinking about building a Winter home there someday. If you decide to sell land for airport homes, maybe I'll sell Cape Coral lots and build at your airport. One of my daughters lives in Titusville and next time I fly down for a visit, maybe can stop over at your airport. Congratulations again and fly safe!

Please tell Commander Smith I said welcome home Brother. Glad you made it out.
I see and hear P-51-Ds all the time, most every weekend and other war birds (I live 2 miles from the Chino Airport) and if you are into war birds then you already know that Chino Airport is home to the worlds largest collection of flying warbirds in the world better known as "Chino Planes of Fame Air Museum" I worked there in the 90s and still go every first Saturday of the month on public display flying days. Last month they had a B-17, a B-25 and a very rare 1 of 1 still flying P-51-A Mustang doing several Take off and landings. Last week was 9 different WWII planes, P-38, P-51-D, F-8-F, TBM Avenger, Dauntless Dive Bomber, P-40 and the list goes on. I'm very excited for you and your airfield, enjoy the dream my friend.
I gotta say a full 1hr or longer video talking to Brad would be amazing! Hearing the history and his story of what he went through would be incredible.

Brad is a National Treasure. My brother spent more than a year on an all-expenses paid 'forced vacation' in VN in '69 and '70. It was good to see my brother come home, and certainly great to see that Brad make it back home to us. Freedom isn't free. Just ask Brad.
Aviation brings out the best in people.
More from Brad please, an absolute hero.
It's hard to explain being super proud of someone that I have never personally met, yet here I am being super proud of Cleet, his crew and the youtube empire he's building. Been here since the Let Er Rip Tater Chip days and the evolution of this channel is inspiring. Thank you Cleetus for the nonstop entertainment. Ed got a big ol smile on his face right now brother.

Brad, much respect to you and your time in the service.
Brad can stay there rent free for his service. A true hero! That's so cool.
Brad was a POW for 7 years, took a few weeks off, and got back on the saddle. What a legend.
Cleetus , you are just East of SRQ. You are making Manasota counties look HIP.
You have come a long way since I started watching you. I am amazed as I watch you give up law school, go full time with Lee and Ruby and when you bought the Freedom Factory it turned to gold. Now an airport! The sky is the limit for you and your family and your gang of great friends.
As a Navy Vet, Brad is the most badass person you have ever had on your channel. What a HERO he is🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡 More Freedom in that man than all the horsepower in a Steve Morris Engine. Awesome video Cleet!!!

This would be a great place to have a plane meet. Instead of a car meet, everyone brings their own plane or helicopter. Maybe you could start your own air show. Next thing you need is a Red Bull stunt plane.
I got a feeling that those folks who are already at that airfield might just have hit the jackpot!

Couldn't have been a better man to purchase it. Would likely have been developed into housing otherwise. Luckily it's much further from Bradenton to avoid the sprawl for longer than the track will. He will no longer be AS close to the track, but still not far.
The best thing about this is the new group of guys it brings to the channel, I hope they all want to be on camera. Brad needs his own series, what a man
Cleetus is such a legit dude. No clickbait, just straight awesome content. Love it. Glad you're having success

Forget the Airstrip or the title or yourself for that matter! You just interviewed a man who was a POW for almost 7 years. That should've been the title! I myself was starting to get choked up when the awesome gentleman was talking about getting shot down and the a prisoner of war and when he said he came back when he was released you seen him sit down because he was getting choked up and the water in his eyes is from what a real man stands for. They don't make that way anymore. Sadly the new generation of kids don't even give our elders any respect and that kills me because this country was build on tough men that fought for our freedoms we have today. So God Bless him and his family for he never giving up and held on for 7 years until they let him go. Now I have military background but this isn't about me so I'll stick to him. You know when you get captured and held for 7 years and your thinking the entire time they don't care about me enough to come get me back and when he gets released he wants to stay and keep flying. A real life hero and your father as well my friend. My grandpa and my dad and all my uncles all served in the Marines as I did also. I thought Iraq and Afghanistan was bad,but these old timers fought in Vietnam. My dad never once could talk to me about what he did and seen over there. And when I became a man and I knew exactly why because you want to leave that in your past. Sorry for the long post buddy I do apologize
2021 up in Noblesville, Indiana, my first cars and airplanes and breakfast ❤ met an retired air force vet flying an older model plane under side read army air force when they were combined back then awesome and honored to meet and hear their military war stories. Hats off to all military service members ❤
Thank you, Cletus. That is one beautiful airport. Looking forward to more videos from you. God bless.
Scott's Dad Bill Yoak built that P-51 in Greenbrier, West Virginia and I got to meet Bill when Scott flew it to Yeager Airport Charleston, WV in 2007 just after it was finished being built. It was at the huge Gathering of Mustangs and Legends in 2007 in Columbus, Ohio. Our Unit back in the day, January 1957, was the last USAF Unit 167th FG WVANG to fly the 51 and retired them out of the inventory. My Dad was in our Unit in 1950 when we had the 51's and was activated during the Korean War. I grew up watching 51's fly over our house all the time (beautiful music from those exhaust) . Quick Silver is a beautiful build and was built from several 51's even parts from Israel AF former 51's. Congratulations on the Airport purchase ! All you need now is Your own 51 !!!

A 51 will cost him more than the airfield, Freedom Factory, workshop and his house put together! I guess Cleet has done a deal with the developers putting up an estate around his present home to help afford this new venture in the McSkeeter empire?

Wow, glad Brad made it home. Tough man who still has hobbies.
So pleased for you to let the gentleman stay and I think you will hear some very good stories
To hear that man's story gave me goosebumps. I'm glad he got to share it on channel. True American hero!!
The things that Brad and the other P.O.W.went through at the Hanoi Hilton are insane. Those guys are truly some of the most resilient men of all time. One of Brads fellow P.O.W. Charlie Plumb wrote a book called "I'm No Hero" that tells the heroic and horrific accounts of their times in Vietnam. If you don't have time to read, episode 76 of the Jocko Podcast does a great job of hitting the highlights. Thank you for your service and welcome home sir!
