Yeah, humans who use the available technology to create something the computer then has to generate. A piece of paper isn't doing anything extra to the drawing you made on it. I don't get what one is hoping to accomplish by just not using language properly because it upsets a bit. You can just not like AI you don't need to justify that by taking offense to existing terminology. Isn't that offensive to all the hard work that went into making the animation programs. There's not some sort of arbitrarily limit to when the word generate is applicable I can't stand when people make up their own definitions of a word so they can take offense to it. If a robot picked up a pencil and drew a picture on a piece of paper would suddenly the term "hand drawn" be something to dislike because it doesn't specify the human involvement.

@@Whispernyan Generate - to produce or create. "Computer generated" implies that the computer created it, when that's not true. You could argue that it is technically correct, since the computer generates the input. But with the rise of AI, generated is beginning to mean "completely/solely produced by x". Example: Text generative AI like ChatGPT or LLMs, Image generative AI like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and DALLE2. Those tools have the word generate in their names because it's what they do - generate. You provide information, and based on your input it generates an output - text, images, sound, etc. In the context of "computer animation", which is a better descriptor than "computer generated animation", the word "generated" only serves to confuse by implying that the computer created it, when it didn't. Hope this helps you understand my point.

I appreciate you pointing out all the details in the background of Soul; Background art is often a very underappreciated art, even though its role is as critical as everything else. But that being said, the skill Pixar puts into their backgrounds isn't unique to them, nor even unique to 3D animation, and so the second half of the video feels a bit disconnected from the first half. Aside from that, I do find it really interesting that Lasseter's first project combined 2D and 3D animation, and we're now starting to see that resurge as audiences grow tired of just 3D film. Really feels like he struck gold at the very beginning, and only dug up half of it by switching to exclusively 3D animation 😅

I love this video.. .So great. I just have to say the one thing I noticed about your comments on Soul... Is that AC isn't normal in San Francisco. It doesn't usually get hot enough to be required, so most home sin San Francisco until recently don't have AC's and especially most of the old ones. I can't tell you the number of places I lived there that didn't have it. That said... I love your videos, I'm learning so much more about the creation of films and what goes into it. I always used to think that the way people read into literature and movies was over the top reading into things that aren't there. But as I've grown older I've realized how these creators take so much care to write those details into life. That said... I think this is one of the only details you got wrong there. Living in SF is expensive, but unless you live in a brand new building or something renovated recently a lot of the places don't have AC because it just doesn't get that hot in SF except for a couple weeks a month in which case you just sweat it out.

9:46 _"Our minds unconsciously start working like a detective's."_ But do they? You talk here about all the background photos and posters and details and suggest that our minds unconsciously take part or all of it in and use it to build someone's backstory. But do they? Have studies been done to show this? Is there any evidence that this is true? I'm asking because I'm the worst movie-goer: I'm so oblivious to even obvious story-points. I would be astonished to find that my mind (or anyone's) works the way you suggest here, even though I know a lot of people believe it. But I'd love to be convinced otherwise.

At some level, yes, I do think that we subconsciously pick up on set dressing details. Whether or not we think about it or investigate those details as he has done in this video is up to you. For me, it usually takes a second watch to really notice and appreciate these details as I'm too taken into the story to notice them fully. I would be curious to see if there are any studies about this, though set dressing is a large part of mise-en-scene so I think that kind of answers the question 🤷🏽‍♀️

I think detectives is just a bad way to describe it. Its not like your brain is a PI looking for things to slowly analyze while your laughing at a brain freeze joke. Rather, your periphery picks up on patterns. Your not building someones backstory, your peripheral vision sees photos and posters of various scenarios. It can instantly recognize it, but your not actively processing it. You see posters, photos, and setdressing. It builds an identity, but not one you will recognize. But when you see the guy he is, clumsy, disorganized, fast paced life. It makes sense. If his house were perfectly neat, spotless, it stands out. Your brain senses something is off, but your not going to piece it together until you think about it. The pattern of a faced paced mucisians life would be, stuff lying around, musical posters, maybe abstract art, etc. If his home was full of trash, no art, poorly kept instruments, you would feel something is off. If his home was pristine, no garbage, nothing out of place, thats also off. The guy is too busy for his place to be that perfect. Thats not detective work, thats the ambient pattern processing of our brains at work. Recognizing when something shouldnt fit.

I mean yeah one of my favorite parts of inside out 2 even though I’ve only seen it once was looking at Riley’s room at things like boy band posters and her reusable water bottle which told me a lot about how she was socially operating before things even got going. Sounds like you’re just not as detail-oriented as some

I wonder how it feels, making back to back to back successful youtube videos and then having one bomb when you clearly put in work, I'm not making fun or hating, I'm geniunely curious how that is for a channel of your size? Does it demotivate you?

It's part of the game. I can't complain with how well the channel is doing in such a short time, and I know it won't always be a hit. Now I'm going to think of new thumbnails and titles for this one, because sometimes a small change can make a video take off.

Decent exploration of the topic, but the title doesn't really line up with what you ended up discussing. Now, you've got over 50k subs and I've got zero so who knows if I know what I'm talking about, but here's a few things I noticed after watching a couple of your vids that I think could really elevate your work. First make sure the thumbnail and title actually relate to the main point of the video if at all possible - I know how much they drive click-through but I'm hard pressed to keep clicking through your videos when the thumbnail and title didn't give a reasonable expectation of what to expect. Second, the gaps in your voiceover to give way to the audio from the scene feel a bit hit and miss. Some of them work well, but others seem a bit pointless and kind of break up the flow of the voiceover. The part where you introduce Soul (around the 8:00 mark) is the worst for it that I noticed. And the last one I'm going to mention is the cutting between voiceover takes and sometimes between background scenes is a bit jarring, like the background change at 10:47 or the voiceover change at 7:18 , where the energy of the line that just ended and the new one don't match at all. Seriously though, you've got good ideas and you're miles past anything I could do, plus you're getting solid sub numbers so maybe just keep doing what you're doing and ignore all of this.

hey, you didn’t conduct these interviews, you didn’t do that newscast, and you didn’t make this history - you need to cite where they’re from, preferably in the video itself. you don’t even do the bare minimum of listing sources in the comments. As you grow as a creator, it becomes more and more important that you correctly cite and share your sources for your works. I promise it’s easy if you track as you go, and on-screen citations would be another way for you to flex your (clearly incredible) editing skills.

@@deee71194 chill out, I never said they were engaging in plagiarism, i said they weren't citing their sources, the only case where they wouldn't being if they had contributed to the works in question. the video makes it clear that the interviews and works are not their own, but sourcing what you draw from for the usefulness of those who want to know more is just an academic standard that makes you look unprofessional if you don't do.
