Records back then were short. Less song, more ads. The first 'long' song that I remember is In a God a da Vida. I doubt the spelling is right. Anyway. I think the song was 11 minutes long but you never knew if they'd play the short one or the long one.

@@mikeguerrero72 The best thing about this time was FM radio, (AOR) which was playing all the long versions of singles . Or just playing long album cuts. The single version of In -A -Gadda -Da -Vida was less than 3 minutes. The album version over 17 minutes.

Let me be the next in a line of many to inform you that this song was covered by Joe Cocker, and it's one of the best covers of all time. The horns, the piano, his VOICE... it's like an embarrassment of riches for Amber! As for the Box Tops, check out "Cry Like a Baby", "Soul Deep", and "Neon Rainbow". The Box Tops' lead singer is Alex Chilton, born in Memphis, died in N'awlins at the young age of 59 (in 2010).

You got to put this song in perspective as far as the visuals! Back when this was recorded most men, 99.9999% of them had extremely short hair, like a burr haircut, flattop, military type haircut. Society really didn't like or accept long haired musicians/men at all. This was really a rebellious look for the day! Today, young folks wouldn't know this about society in all reality but that was a very big part of the 60s revolution!

Lead singer Alex Chilton went on to form the band Big Star which J&A would absolutely love. One of the most influential but criminally unknown pop bands ever. Paul Westerberg of The Replacements even wrote a song about him called, obviously, "Alex Chilton", with the lyrics, 'I never travel far, without a little Big Star' and 'children by the millions scream for Alex Chilton when he comes 'round'. If you check them out, I'd start with "September Gurls" or "Thirteen", but "I'm in Love with a Girl" and "In the Street" are two other good intro tracks. There are so many articles and videos praising Alex and that band.

The Box Tops is an American rock band formed in Memphis in 1967. They are best known for the hits "The Letter", "Cry Like a Baby", "Choo Choo Train," and "Soul Deep" and are considered a major blue-eyed soul group of the period. They performed a mixture of current soul music songs by artists such as James & Bobby Purify and Clifford Curry; pop tunes such as "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum; and songs written by their producers, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, and Chips Moman. Vocalist Alex Chilton went on to front the power pop band Big Star and to launch a career as a solo artist, during which he occasionally performed songs he had sung with the Box Tops.

2:15 Amber, you are absolutely killing me with that look from about eight seconds before and then suddenly all that Slinky movement you're doing, and the look of Joy on your face, it just kills me. Yeah man that frontman, this may be their biggest it but they had a lot of good stuff but more importantly, it's spawned a career of this personality, Jonathan Richman. I got to see him in the early 80s or actually really the late eighties at this local venue in my hometown here in Lawrence Kansas, and I played it that place many times so man you can imagine the synchronicity I felt with him. He really did have a wonderful solo career. But when I was in junior high, and I discovered this? I was just in heaven and I would listen to this one off the vinyl that I'd started to buy a lot of it that point, I would listen to it back-to-back with The Hollies, bus stop, which I think you guys are acted too. For me somehow they just fit right together, laugh.

The lead sing was Alex Chilton and their other hit song was "Cry like a baby" When this song was released in 1966 he was just 16 years old! (So in this video he was 17) He was also in a band called "Big Star"

The singer was Alex Chilton. When I was in high school, my friend and I went to a burger joint accross the street from the school during lunch and every day I would pump quarters into the juke box and play this song over and over and over and over and it drove people crazy! This song is just catchy af. So glad you already did this. I was going to ask for it.

This was the first and biggest charting song by The BoxTops. It took 30 takes to get this winner tune. It's about a man who gets a letter from his girlfriend telling him she wants to get back together. So he is desperate to get back to her. It was called blue eyed soul at the time. Joe Cocker recorded this song and it was his first top 10 record. Great song with great vocals and amazing backage especially the horns. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Alex Chilton Lead vocalist for The Box Tops, was 16 years old when he recorded this song. [I bet you couldn't have found a single person who would've guessed that he was under 45 after hearing this song!] Chilton joined/helped to establish another band (that, really, became legendary in the '90s -because so many of the musicians who became successful then claimed fealty to this band.): Big Star; but, undeservedly: Big Star never developed the kind of success which their music cried out for/demanded. They became "underground legends," lauded for tehir influence in later decades.... Alex Chilton was a respected song-writer and he had a solo career, as well ...but never, remotely, as successful as The Box Tops' "The Letter" (and unfairly so!).

That, and the fact that Chilton didn't really use his normal singing voice on "The Letter". Producer Dan Penn coached him to sing it the way Penn sings, with that gravelly, cigarette-stained baritone. Chilton's normal singing voice was the reedy tenor he used in Big Star and later in his solo career.

Oh Yeah! This features Alex Chilton on lead vocals. After leaving The Box Tops he co-founded Big Star. Check out "In The Street" which you may know as the theme from That 70's Show. Also, The Doors were formed in 1965, and their first album came out in January of 1967, eight months before this song came out. On an unrelated note, you should also check out Ian Hunter's "Cleveland Rocks."

Great reaction. This song is just the tip of the iceberg of Alex Chilton's talents. As mentioned in other comments, his best music was when he was in Big Star. By far the most underrated band of all time. All 3 of their studio albums are listed in Rolling Stone magazines top 500 albums of all time. I suggest 'Thirteen' or 'When My Baby's Beside Me' from #1 Record. #1 Record also features the equally talented Chris Bell. And btw, Alex changed his voice for 'The Letter' to sound older than his 16 years. .
