Jim Dandy (the male singer) was like a predecessor of David Lee Roth, a showman with long blond hair (who also played the washboard on a couple songs....) and used a lot of unique expressions (mostly crass) and story telling. I have a personal history with BOA, as my band opened for them three nights at a Fargo bar in 1986 (Jim Dandy and rhythm guitarist Rickie Lee Reynolds, plus some amazing younger players) - I also ran sound for them, and taped some incredible live performances, including one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard. Also listen to older than Grandpa, good stuff, the whole high on the hog album, I'm a gigolo, Back Door Man, all as good or better songs than the remake of Jim Dandy to the rescue with the late Ruby star. I grew up listening to them in the 70's in my 74 nova with a craig power play 8 track stereo saw em live twice at Sturgis in the early/mid 80's . Still one of the best live shows I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot. I love those guys! God bless Jim Dandy and Black Oak Arkansas!

BOA are a one of a kind badass rock band!!!!!

You two grew up in the wrong time ... some of us were fortunate enough to grow up in the late 60s to early 80s and in the south. Black Oak Arkansas, Mountain, Lynryd Skynrd, The Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughn, to name a few ;) It is so much fun to see you to rocking and smiling ... CHAIR DANCING at it's best!

Chair dancing!!!! wow been a minute or two since I heard that phrase!!!! We all chair danced to this - no matter where we were!! Especially at a restaurant with a tabletop jukebox!! We loved this song as well as "Play that funky music white boy or Jeremiah was a bull frog!! my bad - Joyt to the world - or Black Betty!!!! Those were the days!!!!

Some more by this awesome band is "Lord Have Mercy on My Soul", When Electricity Came to Arkansas ",Uncle Ligah" and "Memories at the Window".These cookers are all on their first album.Me and my friends would trade albums like baseball cards.This one passed around the community more than any other.It was scratched all to hell.

I have watched the Live version.......about 2 ft from the stage. She was atad hotter in person......just sayin. It was ahellva show and a memory I hope I can take to my grave. Rock-n-Roll Heaven oughtta justa about be jammin by the time I get there.

This was actually a cover version. Laverne Baker did the original version back in 1956. James "Jim Dandy" Mangrum was reportedly the inspiration behind David Lee Roth of Van Halen. Other great BOA songs are Uncle Lijiah, Lord Have Mercy on my Soul, and Son of a Gun. They also did versions of The Beatles' Taxman and The Byrds' So You Want to be a Rock and Roll Star.

Yes yes yes " Jim Dandy to the rescue" was a commercialistic success but didn't convey their amazing talent and unique sound.

Tommy Aldridge, their drummer went on to be one of the best drummers on the planet. Definitely need to see them live.

Hell yes! Was the drummer for Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, and of course, it all started with Black Oak Arkansas.

I saw BOA in the early 70's as a warmup band for I can't remember. But what I CAN remember is the lead singer coming on the stage with long white hair and running and jumping all over the stage throughout the entire set. What a showman!!

I live about 20 miles from Black Oak. Ran into Jim Dandy in the grocery store a few years back. Nice guy. These guys were one of the best LIVE bands you would ever see. They had everyone dancing, just like you guys. The female singer is a lady named Ruby Starr, she led her own band called Grey Ghost.

In the mid 70s, I drove by the compound where the whole BOA band lived together in Oakland, Ark. It looked like Fort Apache, and you couldn't see nothin'.

This was one of my favorite tunes growing up in the 70's! A southern contemporary of Black Oak Arkansas was a band from Springfield, Missouri called Ozark Mountain Daredevils. They had a harmonica-driven 1974 hit "If You Wanna Get to Heaven" that's a lot of fun to listen to, and a bigger hit already mentioned "Jackie Blue" from 1975 - not so southern sounding but I think you'll enjoy it. Awesome !!!!! I can't believe someone finally played some Black Oak Arkansas. Now I'm going to have to give you some trivia: The drummer (Tommy Eldridge) ended up being the drummer for several big bands including Ozzy Osbourne. I'm sure you know by now the singer's name ( nickname ) is Jim Dandy. I believe something his dad would call him taken from an old western gambler. I think in an interview he said it was Diamond Jim Dandy. David Lee Roth stage presence was inspired by Jim Dandy and if you watch some of Black Oak Arkansas performances you will totally understand. Black Oak Arkansas was actually a very up-and-coming band but they're touring was seriously restricted due to them being on probation because they stole their Pa's and amplifiers from a local high school and got caught and put on probation so they could not tour as much as management and record companies wanted. Personally I think it was the inability to tour Nationwide on a regular basis that put the kibosh on their career. Record companies of that time totally wanted bands to tour to make money and promote.

You need to see the live video with Ruby Starr. She is the one singing Go Jim Dandy. A country song along these lines is The Statler Brothers Along Came Jones., I think both refer to the western serial shorts that ran before the main movie and always ended in a cliff hanger waiting for the hero to show up.

I don't recall the Statler Brothers doing "Along Came Jones". I think you are thinking of Ray Stevens. I could be wrong though. I highly recommend both artists though. Jay and Amber, I bet, will be mesmerized by the Statlers. A great quartet with an even greater sound. 2 out of 4 of them are actually brothers. Anything by them is good. A couple good songs by them would be "Flowers on the Wall" or "Charlotte's Web" or "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You". Ray Stevens is best known for his funny songs, like "The Streak"or "Shriner's Convention" and the previously mentioned "Along Came Jones", but also has many serious ones too, like his grammy winning "Everything is Beautiful". You could also check out his duet with Dolly Parton, "Happy, Happy Birthday, Baby", which showcases Rays vocals, and sense of humor too, Plus, Dolly is... Well, Dolly.

Ruby Starr was the women belting out "go Jim Dandy!", she sang w/ Black Oak a bunch on tour I think, had a career of her own that never lifted off as much as maybe it should've. Jim Dandy was the lead singer, a wild eyed, wild voiced, front-man extraordinaire. Great song, cool band.

I saw these guys several times live. HOT sound, tight as a drum, and crowd pleasin. My favorite tune is 'Fever in my mind'.

Finally got around to our Arkansas neighbors. You gotta do “Uncle Elijah” for Jay. These guys played to sold out mega arenas back in the day.

BOA was a very visual band and you must watch their live videos to appreciate the energy of singer Jim Dandy and the rest of the boyz...

I saw them open for Foghat and Ronny Montrose (w/Hagar) back in the mid 70's. Was a young teen, hanging out in the balcony with the guy working the spotlight. Whatever he smoked with me put me into orbit...

This is another great remake of a 1950's song, originally done by LaVern Baker . Saw Black Oak Arkansas at the California Jam festival in 1974. A fun band.

@@garyarnett1220 It was wonderful to see all those bands. The organizers of the festival don't get nearly the credit they deserve for how well the event was run. The use of railroad tracks to move various stages in and out was brilliant!

The girl singing with them is Ruby Starr. She was like 4'11". Tiny,but with a mighty voice! Her bright red curly hair was bigger then she was! It's good to hear this once again. I've seen them do it live so many times. Hehe. These guys are old friends of mine. I went on tour with them and Ruby several times. They used to send me Christmas cards every year,and photos all the time. We lost track of eachother years ago though when Ruby died. I went back to England and they stayed in their own little town,Black Oak. I still miss Ruby and Grey Ghost(her band),and BOA even now.

My favorite Southern Rock Band who drew huge crowds in the 70s, this is the only song they did that made it top 40. UNCLE ELIJAH is a great Black Oak tune. "Fancy Nancy" another great tune.

Black Oak Arkansas was one of my favorites back in the day. If you enjoyed Jim Dandy, play "Hot Rod"! You'll love it.

This song is a cover of a 50s hit. My very first concert was Black Oak, this was back when you got 3 bands performing. The opener was Stories, followed by Jo Jo Gunne then Black Oak was the headliner. The lead singers name is Jim Dandy. 2 of my favorites are Uncle Lijah and When Electricity Came To Arkansas! When Electricity Came To Arkansas is an instrumental but they use a unique instrument that I'd like to see if you can figure out what it is. I think Amber will figure it out before Jay!! 😃❤😃

I saw them several times in the 70's. One time was them with Ten Years After.

A smile is what I get every time I see ya'll young kids react this way to the music I grew up with. Brings back so many memories of a Lifetime ago. Makes the pain of old age/worn out body disappear alittle bit. Onna side note......Laughter is Good Medicine. DuckDuckGo it. Laughter releases your bodies naturally occurring 'feel-good' drugs and has a positive effect on overall Health. Saw them in 72 and 73 great concerts. A lot of energy.

The girl on backing vocals is the late Ruby Starr, who had albums on her own and with her band Grey Ghost. ALL of it is good!

Another good band is The (Young) Rascals - they got rid of "young" part way through their career. Songs like: A Beautiful Morning, Lonely Too Long, Groovin', and Good Lovin'. They are a group that influenced others.

The female back-up singer is named Ruby Starr, nicknamed " The Warbler. A serious talent in her own right. A great example of her talent is her cover of Paul McCartneys " Maybe I'm Amazed". Definitely worth a review.

Finally! My all-time favorite group. I have seen them live a couple dozen times. You can still see Jim Dandy as they still play live shows. And Ruby Starr was fantastic. She toured with BOA in the 70's. As others have said, Lord Have Mercy on My Soul is a must hear. My personal favorite is Forgive and Forget. And I love Ruby Starr's cover of The Beatles' Maybe I'm Amazed.

Live on stage, these guys were solid energy. Y'all need to checkout more.

Not bad for a cover! I never knew this existed. I always heard the song by LaVern Baker.

Wow! This really takes me back in time. In 1971 I was a student at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville Illinois. I was heavily involved in television production classes there. We recorded a weekly 30 minute show called "Tube Trip" that ran on a station in St. Louis on Saturday nights. We got credit for one of our production classes for being a part of the crew for that show. We tried to get local talent, and also any up and coming groups that might be appearing in St. Louis to come over to SIU and record a show with us. And one time we actually got Black Oak Arkansas to agree to come to our campus and do a show at our studios. They were just starting to get some national attention and were willing to do a show like ours to keep pushing their brand. It was awesome. I ran one of the large studio cameras and at one point we took a 15 minute break while their manager decided which song should be next. While we were waiting in the studio, the bass guitar player came over to me at my camera and said, "Hey man, how do you work this thing? Show me how to run this camera." I showed him how and he grabbed the camera and started zooming and panning around the set. Then he said, "This is fun. You know what? I'd like to run the camera on the next song. Think I could?" I said, "Sure, but who'd play bass?" He thought for a moment, then he grinned and said, "Hey, can you play guitar?" I said, "No, but I sure wish I could. That'd be cool." He said, " Yeah, but I guess they wouldn't let us do that anyway. Well, thanks man. Have fun and get some good shots of me, OK?" I said, " You know I will." And he went back to the set and a few minutes later we finished recording the show. Great afternoon "at school", and I almost got to play bass for Black Oak! Ah, memories. . .

Miss you Ruby Starr, Ruby is the female singer, met her when she fronted Grey-Starr. Played in Milwaukee many times before she passed too young.

If you do them again please try "when electricity came to Arkansas". You will not be disappointed. Plus you really need to see some video of live performances by them and you will know where David Lee Roth got his stage presence from.

Another great Ozark Mountain Daredevils song to react to would be "If You Wanna Get to Heaven(You Gotta raise a Litle Hell.)"

That high female voice saying "Go Jim Dandy" is Ruby Starr. She was the perfect counterpart to the raunchiness of Jim "Dandy" Mangrum. She was a singer on her own right but is best remembered as part of Black Oak Arkansas. She died at the age of 45 of lung and brain cancer.

That screamer you hear was named Ruby Starr. She was a force of nature. Unfortunately she passed back in 1995. They put on an amazing live show! You couldn’t stand still while they were playing

On the soundtrack of Dazed and Confused. A must watch movie of High School in the mid to late 70's. Very accurate I might add. 1976 was my Freshman year. 😎

The ladies voice was Ruby Starr who did her own albums and unfortunately passed some years back. The album was produced by Tom Dowd (just Google!). Jim Dandy was a cover of the original Jim Dandy by blues singer Lavern Baker in 1955, and the drummer was Tommy Aldridge who went on to play with Ozzy Osbourne and Whitesnake. Three of the guitar players, Rickie, Jimmy and Stanley have passed away but BOA lives on in the music. Rock in Peace, LD

My husband was in his last months of his enlistment (69-73) and stationed in Abilene, Texas. Some of his buddies were from just north of Amarillo and they drove up to see BOA play! It was his very first concert and he loved it!! Five months later when he had gotten out and they were touring in our hometown, Chicago, of course he went to see them!

Back in the early days of "Underground " FM radio...Lord Have Mercy on my Soul/When Electricity Came To Arkansas were staples. Studio version from their debut album please!

Saw them when this became a hit. They were on Tour with Three Dog Night. They literally tore the place down they were rocking so much. Jim Dandy Mangrum's Waist Length Hair as he danced across stage, the Wild Screaming and beautiful Voice of "Ruby Starr", and my monster Drummer Hero Tommy Aldridge.

During the 70s it was an impossibility to not see them at a venue, headliner, start up band, concert halls, arenas, fairs, night clubs. If there was a celebration, they were there, one of the hardest working bands at that time. If there was an electrical outlet, they appeared put of thin air... 😃😁

Little known fact: Elvis suggestedthis song to Black Oak Arkansas, whose lead singer was Jim Dandy Mangrum. I think the best KZread screening of theirs is live at Cal Jam 4...the double song "When Electricity Came to Arkansas/Dixieland." It captures the electric stage presence of Mangrum, who David Lee Roth (Van Halen) styled himself after.

Jim Mangrum (Jim Dandy) was one of the best frontman in Rock n Roll history. I had the great good fortune of meeting Mr. Mangrum when I was 17 years old and got to spend an evening with him and his band Black Oak Arkansas on their day off the night before a show way back in 79. Despite his wild man image on stage he was a completely different off stage as he was laid back, very approachable and a thoughtful person. It seemed the only thing he cared about off stage was that his band mates were being taken care of. He also struck me as a very generous man. Even off stage he was still a larger than life character. About 10 years later I was working for a company that transferred me to an operation we had goin at a steel plant in rural Blytheville, Arkansas. One day I road my bike about 15 miles out of Blytheville on the main highway goin west when I saw a road sign that said. “Black Oak - 1 mile”. So I’m automatically thinking “Is this THAT Black Oak, Arkansas?”. So I dropped into a local gas station to get something to drink if this was the Black Oak Arkansas of Rock n Roll fame and confined that yes it was and was Jim Mangrums hometown. It turns out the famous author John Grisham is from Black Oak Arkansas. On a side note I met Mr. Grisham at a book signing at a tiny little book store in Blytheville. The book store helped promote Mr. Grisham books when he first started writing novels and he paid them back by returning once a year to do book signing. I also met another famous person at that little bookstore. I met Hillary Rodham Clinton there. She was the First Lady of Arkansas at that time as Bill was Governor. Mrs. Clinton as guest of honor for a book reading with the topic of Southern Authors. I was very much impressed by her. The book she read from was The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. After her reading there was a Q&A session and I was able to ask her a question which was “I’ve tried reading The Sound and the Fury several times and just didn’t get it. What is it about this novel I don’t get?”. She then explained to me that it was probably because Faulkner wrote in a stream on consciousness style and suggested I try reading it again but pretend that I was writing the words and sentences as I would as they popped into my head. She was right. I tried reading it again and then I got it. Interestingly Hillary Clinton is the second most famous person I’ve ever met. The most famous person I ever met was Neil Armstrong the Astronaut. Mr. Armstrong happened to have been raised in my hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio.

An early date with my future wife at an evening concert (free too I think) at Lake Alice in the center of campus at the University of Florida, a blanket on the lawn, a bottle of wine and BOA. Over 40 years ago but still a nice memory. I recommend "Strong Enough to Be Gentle". Thanks for sharing your reaction to BOA. :-)

Saw black oak and rush in 78 the concerts in the 70s we're great

I'm from Arkansas. I've seen chickens running around in a gas station. My Mom used the word flitter as a cuss word. My Dad converted a school bus into a place, basically, a place to sleep. We had an outhouse, frig was outside, cooked outside, I would catch fish for supper. We hauled water from a spring. We took bath in a wash tub. All because our Dad didn't want us to take things for granted. We weren't poor. He just wanted us to learn a lesson. I did, many. But man did I miss indoor plumbing 😂

Wow, Jim Dandy and Frankenstein on the same day. I remember when these songs came out. They were both favorites when I was a little kid listening to my older brothers cranking them out in their rooms. And yes you can definitely see how DLR took his stage presence from Jim Dandy.

I was in a band that opened for Black Oak in Golden, Colorado. Upon asking for an autograph, Jim Dandy Mangrum handed me a half smoked doobie, had me take a seat, and passed me a bottle of Jack Daniels while he signed my drum head. Great guys, the whole band!

I was in high school when this came out. Loved his crazy voice. The album was crazy.

Underappreciated band, though one of their greatest contributions was discovering the unbelievable Shawn Lane and bringing him on board as a guitarist at fifteen years of age. Shawn is absolutely one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and was possibly an even better pianist. Do yourselves a favor and look him up.

They were in the very first concert I ever attended. 14 years old, City Park Stadium, New Orleans, Montrose with Sammy Haggar, The J. Geils Band. Peter Frampton, Jim Dandy and Black Oak Arkansas and some other bands I can't recall. 1975. An eye opener for sure lol.

You need to see the video of them playing in the band on stage. their old 70's concert, Jim lost that voice in his old age, Ruby Starr passed away at 45 from cancer.

A female singer named Laverne Baker from the 50's is the original artist that sang Jim Dandy, Black Oak Arkansas covered the song in the 70's. But the song is originally a 50's pop song. In case you guys didn't know that. The song Jim Dandy by Black Oak Arkansas is featured in The movie Dazed and confused that I have suggested to you guys before to watch on your movie channel. You guys would enjoy Dazed and confused, I really think that you would. The movie Dazed and confused also features another Black Oak Arkansas song as well. Called the Halls of Kharma. Matthew MaConnahey debuted in Dazed and confused as well. Just a fun fact for you guys.

I saw Black Oak Arkansas at the Arkansas State Fair in Little Rock back in ‘74. They were the closing act. It was awesome.

The Drummer (Tommy Aldridge) Played for Ozzy Osbourne and is currently with Whitesnake. The woman singer was Ruby Starr. She died in in 1995 at age 45 from cancer.

I saw Black Oak in I believe late '75. It was as part of a 6 band all night Christmas concert in the newly built Market Square Arena here in Indy (Now long since torn down with a plaque at the spot commemorating it was the site of Elvis' last concert). Other bands in that concert were Bob Seger, Rush, Mahogany Rush etc. A great time was had by all lol.

@Bloodewing I have fond memories of Market Square Arena. I'm not from Indy but attended many concerts there (had relatives in town). I saw Zeppelin three times in three different cities, the last time being at Market Square Arena in '77. Got my first (& only) whiff of tear gas there as they let the crowd in. Thank goodness that didn't ruin a truly great concert. Saw Robert Plant there a couple of times in the 80's during his solo career. Also when he & Jimmy Page reunited for that fantastic tour they did together in '94 (?). Wonderful memories. I was fortunate to see so many great shows, great artists, including Hendrix three months before he died, at Roberts Stadium in Evansville. Stood leaning against the stage taking pictures of him. During his encore he leaned down to hand me his guitar pick but as I reached up to take it, a big burly guy jostled me aside & grabbed it instead. Still makes me mad! That's also where I saw Zeppelin the first time & other concerts..Deep Purple, Joe Walsh..Alice Cooper..so many. Roberts Stadium wasn't quite as nice as Market Square Arena (older, of course) but it didn't really matter once the lights went down. It's gone now too. Thanks for mentioning the plaque that's at MSA's site now. I was aware that Elvis's last performance was there but didn't know about the plaque. I saw Elvis in Nashville in '73 & in Louisville in '74. I didn't see that last show but I'm glad I saw him when he was healthier & seemed happier. Market Square Arena held a special poignance for being his last stop..what a monumental icon he was. Without him there might not have been all those great bands we saw that came after the got the ball rolling, or not in the same form anyway. And when I think about all the live music, from so many artists, that echoed off those walls & the walls of stadiums & arenas around the country, they & their memories seem almost sacred to me. Sorry for my reply being so long, didn't mean for it to turn into a letter! But your comment kicked off a wave of nostalgia. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.💙☮🎶

I went to high school with Tommy Aldridge and Jimmy Henderson. Tommy played drums for BOA for a while, Jimmy played guitar. Man, we all used to boogie hard to Black Oak Arkansas. Big big fun!

The lead singer (Jim "Dandy" Mangrum) was David Lee Roth before David Lee Roth. Saw them on In Concert on ABC back in 1973 and was hooked on them since. The female singer you hear in the back ground was " Ruby Starr" who was famous in her own right. Unfortunately, she passed away in 1995 from both lung cancer and a brain tumor. You should react to them live, Jim Dandy doesn't look like the typical southern rocker.

I promoted this band back in the 80's for a motorcycle rally. I owned a local business and Jim Dandy walked in, long blonde hair, no shirt and those boots. He said where's Jeff, I need some drinking money. It was a wild weekend.

I'm originally from Arkansas and when I was about 16 BOA lived in a house just down the street from us. Believe me, they lived the rock and roll lifestyle!

The female vocalist is Ruby Starr. She toured with BOA when she wasn't on the road with her band Grey Ghost.

Uncle Lijah, Hot Rod and When Electricity Came to Arkansas (which was awesome live). They were a great live band. I love your enthusiasm!
