This pedal brings back many memories for me. I was about 13 years old and it was my Birthday. My Mom took me to a used gear shop and let me pick out a pedal...(probably 1987 ish...yeah I'm old.) Anyway, I picked this one. I had sooo much fun with that pedal. I had no idea what I was doing or what the knobs meant, but I felt like a guitar god when I plugged into my Crate amp at home and chugged some drop D riffs. Sounds pretty damn good! I'm guessing it's not fully digital. Probably analog distortion section with some ancient DSP for the chorus and delay.
You CAN hear the overtones of a chainsaw here and with stereo outputs this could be very useful.
I was waiting a lot for a video about this pedal from a metalhead's perspective, i was thinking about buying this pedal but before i wanted to see a really detailed review, thank you for the video!
Great review
You made it sound good - I did not expect to like it
Here because David Gilmore used one
Sounds awesome
i know of this pedal since years, but never found or at least at agood price. by itself is a decentish distortion pedal but i always liked the opportunity of using for stereoish sound without adding a chorus or other effects.
That is actually good sounding.
Believe it or not, Dave Gilmour actually used this pedal for a short period in 1994. Apparently.

The lore says same about HM-2

Do you have a source? Not suggesting you're wrong only that the HM-2 is widely reported but not the MZ-2.
weird pedal, but the chorus + distortion kinda has a Type O Negative vibe
I could see using this pedal for the split signal and slight delay to help with a single guitar band really push the guitar through. I have heard of guitarists using a very minimal delay for that purpose. I would definitely use it in front of a dirty channel. Personally, I would consider using a Boss DM-2w to do this just because I already have the gain needed.
this pedal kick ass I've been able to pull off with pre amp graphic eq pedals to get the rockman x100 def leppard loverboy sound with it
Did anyone know about the PCB of this pedal... There are some clones or line sound? Without the delay section in preference
Someone here on KZread had a video demonstrating how you can make this sound exactly like Sammy Hagar era Van Halen

What a wonderfully strange pedal!

@@DomeNightbearerhave you tried the xtortion? That seems like peak BOSS 90's weirdness

@@LeonTodd I had the possibility to buy it, but spoke to Jerome from aib who said it's really not worth it, so I skipped it!
I have the original pamflets from when it cames out. It sounds a bit like a turbo overdrive with chorus and delay. It was the same price as the DD-3 at that time (about 137€, back in the early 1990's). And that was too much money for me then. That's why it's the only Metal pedal from BOSS, i don't own......

huh... Turbe distortion... Not that you're saying that I have to agree
Isn't this like a tc mimiq before the tc mimiq? I mean the idea seems the same plus a distortion.
@DomeNightbearer

yes and no. The mimiq does not only time-shift, but pitch as well. And apparently it's no static delay and pitch-detune, but kinda random
Oww, Rotting Christ uses this pedal back then. Saw it live on their stage.. 😉
Bought this pedal 10 years ago for very cheap and used with stereo setup. Gain part is awful and very noisy, so modded it for my taste (schematicaly it's just op-amp distortion + dd-2 with fixed time and modulation). Nowadays thera are many options on the market (tc mimiq for example) and this pedal have no sence.

In case anyone cares, the distortion part of the pedal is not opamp based, it is fully discrete and jfet based (similar, though not identical, to the Boss OD-2)

@@jamesprisciandaro3144 OD-2 and MZ-2 use discrete op-amp gain stages like many other Boss pedals because they are cheaper. But schematically they are totally different.
I never understood the purpose of this pedal
God I'd forgotten about this awful pedal.
