Thanks for the cool review. Currently using the Boss VE-2. Look forward to seeing more reviews on YT of performers using it to beef up the chorus or a section in the song in a subtle way. In addition, the overall improvement in tone, EQ, compression etc to produce a natural but enhanced voice is what I am most interested in.

Without Auto-Harmony?? Honestly I don't understand why Boss in the middle of 2024 does such a thing. I had the VE-20, I sold it because It sang outside the tone, I moved to Ve-2 which is the best of all. Even better than VE-500. I thought, however, this one, with this wonderful display, would be my new love. But it seems not !! What a pity boss. 😥😥

It looks like a great pedal. I’ve yet to see it used live on stage. Like most boss stuff I very rarely see live use apart from the classic foot pedals. However like most Boss gear you need to spend time getting to know what it can do. For me a wireless hand button would have been a great idea first a singer instead of searching with your foot.

Hi, thanks for the review. I was wondering if there's a way to put a permanent reverb, even with the "echo" turned off. Like the VE-20 could do....I would love to use the delay effect in a seperate way (it should be in the effects, not in the echo), right now it's impossible as I see and it's kinda of a step back...

I noticed that effect pedal switch can be set to either momentary or toggle. You said that if you turn off the effect or switch preset, effects won't have tail but they turn on and off immediately, but does it work that way in momentary as well? I'd like to have e.g. delay or huge reverb as momentary for single word and be able to leave it background while singining continues. Thanks for great video John!

Boss Gigcaster now handles all my guitar and vocal effects, except for a tap tempo delay I’ve kept on a small board with my looper). So I’ll probably not need any potential VE-8 upgrade but I think an update with all the usual boss effects with a screen like this one would be a very good product.

Hi, can you explain how the auto pitch correction works? Does the key of each song your playing have to be programmed into the unit to make it work properly? When I think of "auto", shouldn't it correct it to the best note your singing in instead of having to program every song?

  • @lambdaman3228

The "best note your singing in" depends entirely on what key you are in. I really don't think you want chromatic pitch correction.

A great vocal pedal. Very easy to navigate and doesn't feel like you're menu diving every 10 seconds. The effects are excellent. HOWEVER, I had to send it back for a refund because of the harmony algorithm. The harmonies sound good, but the 'fixed' algorithm is too stiff. Example: If you're in the key of G and you sing a 'D' with the harmonizer set at '3rd up' it will generate an F#. That is diatonically correct, but if you're playing a G chord at the time the harmony makes it into a Gmaj7. That stiffness was a deal breaker for me. The 'intelligent' harmony of the VE500 or a TC Helicon Harmony Singer 2 is vastly superior. The VE22 would be good if you specialized in vocal effects with the odd harmony thrown in. If you want harmony with a few effects thrown in look elsewhere.

  • @JohnPaulMusicUK

I have the Boss VE-500, VE-20 and now the VE-22. In the previous two, pitch correction is its own block just like Dynamics. In the VE-22, it is under the effects section so it does not appear you can use pitch correction with any other effect such as chorus for example. Is this correct because that almost seems like a step back from the VE-20? Its a shame because I would love to have a subtle pitch correction with the really great chorus sound in the VE-22. Unfortunately i sold my VE-20 and VE-500 right before receiving the new VE-22 unit. Is there a way to use pitch correction and another effect at the same time like you can in the VE-20.

However, I've tried to figure this out and even from the manual it really looks like Pitch correction is not available as an "always on" option as it was in the previous ve-20. You need to choose it as an effect. This means you cannot use it in conjunction with any other effect. I have actually repurchased a VE-500 for only a few dollars more than the VE-22. Alkaline batteries will give you the best performance. 6hrs with phantom power and 9hrs without phantom. If you are worried then you could always use an external power supply like I use which runs multiple things and lasts for HOURS (and has a battery indicator: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aox1xK2mZ5TKhtI.htmlsi=vqDhCagNPt1lh0Ha

Technically you could do that but a couple of issues you might run into. 1) couldn’t use anything that needs phantom power 2) unable to use the harmony when both are singing as it will confuse the engine of what to harmonise with but should be okay if one is singing or singing in unison. 3) certain effects might sound strange 4) be careful of the input gain and make sure there is a similar volume for each.. different voices can have different volumes. 5) might be better to put both vocals into a small mixer and then the output of that mixer into the VE-22 - this will help with balance. Hope this helps

I've seen several comments regarding TC Helicon vs. the BOSS vocal processors. Of course there are A LOT of musicians who are way more familiar with vocal processors than myself! ;) I am not a musician, and don't play an instrument; I sing. I own 3 TC Helicon units, including a VoiceLive 2. Each one requires you to input music , or an instrument to determine the song key for harmonies automatically, OR to allow the "room sense" mic on the unit to "listen" for the music, to determine the key for harmonies automatically (which is not to great if playing in a room where there is some noise, which could confuse the unit). The whole reason I bought the BOSS VE-22 is because it does NOT have to feature to automatically figure out the song key for harmonies. I don't mind setting the song key manually, and intend to have a User setting for each and every song key, as a preset. My TC-Helicon Perform V is simple to use for doubling, reverb, and echo, and it is supposed to allow you to "beam" harmony presets to the unit, but the software needed for my phone will not load! I get a message that I need an older phone! Funny, my phone IS old. I could load the presets with my laptop, but I don't want to lug around a laptop to every gig! Maybe I'll also play around with the VoiceLive 2 some more, and try and run music from my looper directly into the unit, and play with the harmonies. Thanks.

Understand. My VE-2 works with guitar or not. It IS cool to hear it shift when I bring in a 7th chord or something, but often setting the key is best… except it’s impossible to see on the floor lol. I might grab one of these to test out for the presets. I broke my wrist so just been singing and keep forgetting to turn that knob to the right key lol. Doublet is fine, but just a light touch of harmony can really make certain parts of a performance come to life. I’m just surprised nobody has nailed this. I would love to be a lead designer and work with artists to make this live friendly and more intuitive. As a guitarist, I know that physical switches are easiest and lights that verify exactly what settings are active. I better see the Key bright and center!

That’s a very interesting take and have only had time today to read it. Thank you for this. For singers with backing tracks who want harmonies, one of the best is still the TC-Helicon Voicelive 3 Extreme. Reason is it had an SD card slot for backing tracks but you could also record the pedal presses, meaning that the harmonies and other effects could come on at the right time without you even pressing a pedal! Great for it your no near it on stage! Shame TC-Helicon isn’t what it used to be.

Question: do you turn off all basic effects on your mixer (e.g. - reverb and echo), and instead set those basic effects for your mic through the BOSS VE-22? The reason I ask: I'm thinking that if you have effects turned on via your mixer, and then you start using effects via the BOSS VE-22 vocal processor, you might get more than you bargained for (e.g. - hearing your VE-22 effect, impacted some by the effects set on your mixer!). I hope that makes sense. I just got my BOSS VE-22, and am going to start experimenting with it. Thx for the lesson! You're a great teacher! ;)

A year or so later, they came out with the Harmony G-XT, which DID follow the guitar for harmonies. So, 17 years ago. What is wrong with Boss? It's not even a separate anything they have to add to it - just add to the programming. It's a deal breaker to almost ALL musicians I know. Bad move.

toooooo much to scroll through for older cats like me. Looks like the screen would be hard to see on an outdoor gig in bright sunlight.

I’m sorry, but this is still a stone-age interface: ridiculously complicated and not at all intuitive! I think they need a giant touchscreen ( think IPad) with stomp buttons for use during during performance.

If I did then you wouldn’t see the screen as it’s super bright! Tried my best with it.
