This genre called “Garage” it’s NOT grime or rap. Garage was out way before Grime.

Lets just say, when this came out 19 years ago it was the biggest urban hit the UK ever had, everyone and their grandmother new it. Made So Solid Crew into a house hold name and paved the way for another handful of radio hits just like this but prob not as well known or remembered: So Solid Crew - Broken Silence So Solid Crew - Haters So Solid Crew & Ms Dynamite - Envy So Solid Crew - Ride Wid Us So Solid Crew - Oh No (Sentimental Things) So Solid Crew - They Don't Know

Yesssss so far back. Now it's time for newham generals. Heartless crew etc. Roll deep
Before Wiley and Dizzie came on the scene, garage was the big underground sound in the U.K. dominated by london. It was born out of house hence the name garage. Originally it was mostly instrumental but as time went on more and more people started spitting on it. When garage MC's first started spitting on the beats it was usually about partying, gd vibes, stuff for the ladies. Music to dance to. As the scene grew and boomed obviously it got more mainstream attention. See tracks such as Wookie - Battle, Love Station - Teardrops, Wideboys - Sambuca, Heartless Crew - Heartless Anthem, Masters of the Ceremomy - Do you really like it, Future Underground Nation - It's the way, Somore - I refuse, Roy Davies Jr. - Gabrielle, Artful.Dodger - Thong Song Remix. So solid were one of the first crews spitting more real life, street bars reflecting the life alot of young men in the hood were really living. Obviously the government hated it and tried to silence them. They 100% set the bencmark for grime, bare mcs spitting 8 bar verses on one track. Grime came after, Wiley was spittung with Pay As You Cartel and then went off and started making beats at 140bpm putting the snare on the 3rd beat of each bar mostly, changing the swing and vibe of the beats. Where as garage had a snare/clap on the 2 and 4 with the hi hat and rim shot/ghost snare shuffle. Sadly grime took oved and garage went back underground but it's legacy is still strong. So Solid were the catalyst for it.
This was crazy big this track. Probably the first huge commercial hit in this genre. Opened alot of doors

If I remember correctly, Oxide and Neutrino (also part of So Solid Crew) hit first with Bound for the reload
The song title alludes to the approximate 21 seconds that each of the band members is given to perform their rap. 21 seconds is arrived at as the song's tempo is approximately 140BPM and each of the 11 so solid members rapper has 12 bars of 4 beats (48 beats at 140BPM, when worked out to the nearest integer, rounds to 21 seconds). It's so solid member Lisa Maffia's daughter laughing at the beginning of the track.

it's 137bpm so it's pretty much bang on 21 seconds, it's 21.02 seconds
@boombaporiginal3359
6 ай бұрын
Incorrect the tempo is 137BPM. UK radio limit for a song is about 3 mins to 3.30, hence the term radio edit. They worked out how many members were gonna be on the track and divided that by the song limit and everyone got 21.9 seconds.
This song was SO huge in the UK 🇬🇧 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I was at school when it came out & it got massive airplay on the radio - it became an anthem 🤍🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 iconic 😎

Hey first time on ur channel, thanks for covering this. But I don't think u realise how the afro Caribbean has blessed us in the UK. I'm Indian British but been blessed with a mixture of music. Hearing u as reminded me lol. Bless
The most important thing about this song is that it was Number One in the charts back when that mattered. That achievement is amazing, when you think back. They didn't have any kind of label hype, they got there off their own backs
It was a MASSIVE track in the UK. They all spat their verses in 21 seconds. That birds Lisa mafia. Still a big tune now 🇬🇧

Oh damn.. this dropped when I went on my first holiday abroad with the boys and remember seeing them other there in Ibiza.. it was 2001 and I was 17... memories right there 😂😂😂
I remember this being big when this came out. Although I heard they’re ‘oh no (sentimental things) before this came out. Going off the topic of garage and grime...... the uk had some hip hop groups in the 90’s.... ‘London Posse’ was one... if you ever wanna check out some of their stuff. They were very early 90’s though.... and had been together since the 80’s.
The dude who spit first was Megaman. He was the brains behind so solid crew. You must check out heir track Envy ft Miss Dynamite ( Akalas sister) Asher D spits more on that track, but Miss dynamite IMO murders them all on it. Another guy who spit a verse was Harvey he has a KZread channel where he does interviews. He interviews Asher D in one of them and he explains where he came from, how his boys would give him grief of going to acting school etc, a decent watch
So solid crew had a lot of members like alottt
rah... i was 3 when this came out lol but i’ve remembered it so vividly throughout the past two decades, because it is a BIG tune and forever will be
Bullet Boy movie came out a few years after 21 Seconds. But Asher D was definitely an actor first because he was in a TV show as a yute in Grange Hill but his acting career really took off after Bullet Boy because he then ended up being in the movie Get Rich or Die Tryin alongside 50 Cent
I was in year 6 when this came out. I can remember listening to it on the Pepsi chart website. 😂
This was poppping everywhere
I was 16 when this dropped was aload of us used to fly around town on our peds remember some guy had speakers on his ped banging this now I'm 35 damm time flies
Take yourself all the way back to Bristol in 1990. The album blue lines by Massive Attack came out that year. It was laced with chilled out hip hop vibes.
I love this song . We use to listen to this song non stop 💃💃

Yes tune!
Almost 20 years ago. I can't believe it was that long ago! This was a huge hit that time. I recall it like it was yesterday. Everyone knows the chorus in Britain.
one of most memorable tracks from Garage. The only songs I played more at the time was Original Nuttah and Bound 4 Da Reload
what you say about Wiley bring the new sound is true...but you had Garage and DnB(/Jungle) which was very UK sound, So Solid came out of that but when MC's came into it at that point US had huge influence. but you also at this point had the underground UK hip hop scene that was about to pop, and shortly after Grime with the whole London sound & Dub Step which was a south UK thing (mainly Bristol and London) The underground Hip hop Scene actually started very UK and proud, but the biggest influence on it was Wu tang. as far as MC's go It was really what came from Dancehall, DnB and Garage but with lyricism that was present in the UK underground hip hop scene that blended to make Grime. This was the first mega UK sound that was for UK MC's in such a big way. There was some US influence on that, but far less that the UK hip hop scene (which is also fire btw its not all just Grime, we spit over anything from grime hip hop dub to fucking DnB and Techno)

This song was MASSIVE in the UK MASSIVE BIG LOVED THIS SONG SOOOOO MUCH FIRST OF ITS KIND
This and giggs - talkin the hardest British anthems
This was hit here in Britain played in every club
This song was huge at the time. So solid crew and garage was what grime wants to be.
Man when this dropped in the UK this was number 1 and it was played everywhere man. Couldn't escape it. Fucking loved it. Was about 13 years old when this dropped.
Big song brings back the good old days
Memories...I was 21 when this song came out and I'm 44 now. This song still hits....
I jamed to this in 2001 wen it was out luv it
So solid where 🔥🔥🔥👌
I’m watching from Argentina 🇦🇷 South America but I grew up in the UK. DJ luck and MC neat were huge at this time, too! 🤍🤍🤍
The whole club vibe to this word4word
this was/is an absolute classic here in the UK. It's very manfufactured to reflect the UK garage love at the time. It's not my bag but I still know all the lyrics lol.... I'd suggest listening to Wookie. Or searching for Pure Garage CD box sets for a good introduction to the late 90's/early 00's garage scene. volume 3 (the purple one) is what I'd suggest lol
One song that brings me straight back to the 90s 😂😂 official UK garage banger decades later😂😂
21 seconds will always be hard !! Old school classic
you need to react to roll deep - the avenue. roll deep was wileys crew. that’s old school grime infused with a bit of hip hop

Swiss was a younger when this came out, his first feature was Broken Silence on their second album.
This was a big hit back in the days you'd hear it in clubs
And all kids where buying them white contact lenses haha
Its very clever. Every Artist sing for 21 seconds .Amazing tune 👌
Solid was the most commercial/recognisable UK Garage group but between ‘99 to ‘01 UK Garage was at its peak!! I was 18 and used to dance all night to these songs!! You’ve got to look up DJ Luck and MC Neat, DJ Pied Piper and the Masters of the Ceremonies, Shola Ama -Imagine, sweet female attitude. Such good tunes!!!
Asher D we basically both since way back... his acting and rapping has always been very close. If you remember he actually was in "Get RIch Or Die Tryin" playing 'Antwon' the guy in 50 cent crew who gets put into a wheel chair.
I ain't really into rap but everyone was singing this including me at school

How big, absolutely massive! UK garage scene was incredible. Romeo dueted with Cristina milian. Check out artful dodger and Craig David- rewind
This song was big, looong time ago but in US not known probably, mad
Swiss was about 14 at the time. His first track was Broken Silence on the second So Solid album.
Yeah this track was huge in New Zealand hard i remeber pumping it it was mean as.
This is about 18-20 years old. Saw it live at amadeus in Rochester when it came out 🤣
I'm so glad UK garage is making a comeback to knock grime back underground were it fuckin belongs good to see Americans like UKG
This is a big tune over there in England still till this day everyone knows of So solid crew
Let's take a moment to appreciate how good the video is too.
Most of this genre (Garage) was played in clubs but there were a few that made it commercially in the charts. The Girl is Lisa Mafia. This was a banger in the 00's.
This was HUGE back in the day. Heartless Crew probably the first UK Garage crew to break mainstream but So Solid really set the bar after them.
This was banging in UK!!!×!
UK garage is where the UK grime scene came from with other influences thay has made the uk rap! Check out more fire crew oi
You missed out Kano in the influences to grime and musicality. He is always passed up, but he was the only one that put hooks, chorus etc in a grime song back then. He made grime viable rather than just MC-ing on a track.
This my shit!!! Garage was the shit back in the day!!
Shout out to Mega who brought up all of his crew buy showcasing their talent and what inner city kids had to offer. When this song hit the UK had seen nothing like it, this was black people truly getting their own voice and style, without being watered down, doing things our way, the black UK way, they only way we knew how! So solid bust down that door for black UK Music and Wiley gave us our Grime sound.
I learnt the words when I was like 6 and realised each verse really is 21 seconds 😂❤banger
Mate!!
At the time they was huge in the game still rated now.
This was a club banger back in day, I’d also say to check out: 57th dynasty / moorish delta 7 / out da ville / roots Manuva / Ty / skinny man / PDC / s.a.s / Rodney p
