The lyrics always tells a story that the music perfectly accompanies. Like as tory with a sound track to match.

I totally understand how you find a lack of cohesion in this song. I would have said the same on my first listen. But, i probably speak for all Spawn fans, especially on this song, when it grows on you, you really know exactly how and when each note hits, and boy it hits different. The whole song then imbricates itself perfectly in some sort of cohesive movements. You can even say there is a melody, beyond the simple "riffage" you'd think first.

I did not like this band the first 3-4 listens, then all the sudden I starting liking it and I now I love it. Once you start remembering the sections of the song, it becomes so much more enjoyable to listen to.

Their 2003 debut 'Cabinet' is still my favorite Spawn of Possession release; still very technical, but a little less 'busy' and more organic sounding than later releases...

Your SoP - Apparition reaction was one of the first I remember watching on this channel. Remember thinking how cool it was to see someone reacting to such an obscure tech-death band! I remember when these guys came out how everyone (well, everyone into extreme metal) were blown away by the sheer virtuosity. They were clearly influenced by bands like Suffocation, Necrophagist, Death, and Gorguts, but were clearly pushing things to the next level in terms of technicality. Shame they didn't stay together longer, but I do think they went out on a high point with this album (Incurso). I definitely get how this can sound completely chaotic/random on a first listen, but it does seem more coherent the more listens you give it, and the whiplash transitions it does have are pretty typical of the genre in general. BTW, a good companion piece to this lyrically is Immolation's Father You're Not a Father. It's not as graphic, but just as effective, and the music is similarly intense, though not quite as tech-y.

One of those songs and albums that once you get a read on the composition, you cant forget.

I’ve been playing guitars for years, and a couple of hours every day nearly… I still can’t comprehend how people can compose music this technical. It’s like hearing Beethoven if he was possessed. And the craziest part of the whole thing is that this is only one of their songs… They’ve got a bunch of albums full of insane compositions

Youre explain of the outro while it was happing was perfect. Realization, dread, hate, relief.

I think the type of tech death you're more likely to enjoy is in what could be called the "german scene", with bands like Obscura, Alkaloid (I know you've already reacted to a couple of tracks from these 2) or Hannes Grossmann's solo work (idk if this could be called a scene in the traditional sense, because these bands' musical imprints have mostly been shaped by a closed group of musicians which have had an outsized influence in the genre and have all played in these projects at some point or another). These projects have the "techness" of tech death while still being very melodic and "phrasal", rather than the heavier, more chaotic variety that you get here in this song.

Father Dorian strikes yet again. Those lyrics are rough.. This song is probably their most chaotic song. It does have a few passages that feel a bit weird on this track. But, with every listen of this track you start noticing more and more that makes "sense". Things you didn't hear at first listen because there is so much happening at the same time with insane speed. For every listen it feels less "random noice" when you starting hearing all the small details. First time I heard this band was live 2002. Didn't understand what I was watching. I dig what I hear on their albums but it doesn't click. But they kept growing on me fast, and when they released Incurso (which this song is from) I was completely hooked. It's hard nowadays finding new tech death that feel this unique. There is just something with Spawn that no other band even comes close to doing! Completely unique sound. Spawn Of Possession will keep being one of the most important band in tech deaths history and will continue to influence bands in this genre. Man it sucks they broke up! Their songs are also insanely fun to play on guitar. It only took me about two years to learn one... Haha, no for real though.. it will make your fingers bleed.

The vocalist actually started out as the band's drummer. His vocal style has a lot in common with the Archspire vocalist in the sense that it can get insanely fast and quite rhythmical. This song is just not the best example of that.

Same, amazing album

While I personally enjoy this stuff. It doesn't seem up your alley much. I think you'd enjoy something more compositionally melodic but still within the realm of Tech Death. Virvum - Illuminance. Really anything off that album is gold. It's imo one of if not the best Tech Death albums ever. Check out the song Ad Rigorem for some very interesting compositional and sonic variation or the song Illuminance if you want something a bit more long winded. Cheers.

Considering your comment about vocals I would definitely like to hear your opinion on Psycroptin - Scepter of the Ancient album, look it up. This song, the dissonance in it, and that hazy vibe it gives to the soundscape is there to mirror the same emotional stuff happening in the main dude, crying out to his mother why is he thrust into all of this that happened to him. so kind of reflective to the lyrics/theme. At least how I go with this song.

There are elements of this song I enjoy, but it’s a bit dense for my personal taste. Either way, your videos are always a good watch!

Funny how the equaliser is maxed out pretty much the whole time! 😆 Hadn't heard anything of Spawn of Posession yet, but it sounds like a super dynamic hybrid of Gorod and Necrophagist and I'm here for it!

@@maaaaaap Indeed, much of their music consists of very melodic fast playing just like Gorod, only it's a bit less repetitive and groovy. And the harmonising as well is what had me think of Gorod. Their solos on the other hand are veeery Necrophagist.

When I saw this recommended on my feed, I immediately thought "Oh no! Not that song! That's going to break Brian!" Your reaction, especially to the lyrical content, was more or less what I expected. I think the lyrics do fit the music, though, in that the music well represents the sort of trauma those endure from childhood abuse, with their very sense of life feeling chaotic, their lack of trust for other people and their difficulties with constant anxiety. Thus, I would say the lyrical content does well to match the discordance of the music. When you were talking about how you wish the vocalists would do something as equally impressive as the rest of the musicians, I knew I had to post this comment to recommend "The World Is Quiet Here"'s latest album, Zon. They're not quite tech death, more progressive metal, but they do take heavy influence from the tech death sound. Their new vocalist, Lou Kelly, is a big fan of experimental music and vocalists, influenced by the likes of Mr Bungle and Primus. He is also one of the most talented vocalists I've ever heard; he must have around a five or six octave range at least and through the course of "Zon" utilizes an uncountable number of unique vocal styles, tones and delivery. If I had to guess, I'd say something like thirty; just off the top of my head, he does a beautiful baritone, death metal growls, black metal screeches, powerful power metal highs, hardcore screams, almost religious sermon chants and Devin Townsend style yells. His natural speaking voice is one of the lowest I've ever heard and so he naturally returns to his baritone singing most often out of everything. I also heard a rumor that his day job was working in musical theater. Lyrically, it's great too. "Zon" is the second album in a series of ongoing concept albums in a coherent musical story. While Lou didn't write any of the lyrics (I believe they all were a collaboration between their guitarist and bassist) and does not appear on their first album, "Prologue" begins the story that leads into Zon. The shortest summary I could give Prologue is it is the story of someone who has built his entire identity around becoming something great; when he finds that he can not achieve such heights, he ends his own life in defiance. Think "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" if it were written by Camus instead of Nietzsche. Zon picks up right where Prologue ends, both musically and lyrically. It is a sort of science fiction exploration of a concept of an afterlife. It's both a beautiful and terrifying story, sonically and lyrically. They have a single off Zon if you just want a small taste, but as you can imagine, it is very hard to capture the band in a single song. Despite their relative size, the production is clean and everything sounds great. Given your taste and your interest in finding something novel, I can't recommend them enough.

Overly verbose is perfectly fine around here. It might not be the most condensed writing but it's passionate and I'll support people showing their musical passion every single day. I'll have to give Zon a go one of these days. I think I've heard an older album of theirs but can't remember if I enjoyed it. Still, the vocal variety you talk about has me extremely interested.

@@CriticalReactions They only have two albums, so if you have heard an older album of theirs it would be "Prologue", with their first vocalist. That album is great too, but Lou is a far more varied and interesting vocalist to my ears. The reviews of Zon I've seen are mostly positive, but the ones that are negative tend to be focused on how Lou keeps changing his vocal style. I guess if variety is the spice of life, he's too spicy for some! :D

u have to listen to the track more often to see the cohesion, its too much for untrained ears, with that im refering to the sounddesign, speed and intensity, when i was really digging into spawn of possession and started practicing their songs it sounded completely different and the compositions made so much more sense, motives and themes were so much more present after that.

Genuinely incredible band

Incurso is easily one of my favorite tech death albums by far. The technicality, the lyrics (ESPECIALLY this song), the composition, brutality... just... nut.

I really liked heavy tension starting at 8:56… reminds me of proggy black metal like grey heaven fall black wisdom album, which you liked but hated the lyrics so it turned you off 😂 its a russian band with weird translarions also

Necrophagist next? In terms of Tech Death, nothing comes closes to Epitaph, most modern Tech Death bands are influenced by Necro. I think you might like it much more than Spawn Of Possession tbh. The thing with Epitaph is, that that album flows so well and every part in the song serves a purpose, it's not just technical for the sake of being technical, if you know what I mean.

I'd posit that First Fragement has surpassed the pinnacle that Necrophagist sat upon. And while I agree Epitaph has better album flow than either of First Fragements albums First Fragement has more technical and beautiful compositions song to song. Check out Illuminance by Virvum if you haven't for one of the best Tech albums too.

Spawn of Possession is just one of those bands that can break the ol' brain 😅

Definitely lacking cohesion… but i think that these kind of bands really require multiple listens with full focus everytime because there is so much to take in. Reminds me of thy darkened shade in a way in that regard, but a lot of other great extreme metal bands. Kinda wish that the bass was pulling in the guitars out of focus, but i really appreciate this sound, the guys are bat shit crazy man

As much as I love spawn possession, I really don't like this record. They have some songs that sound good. But together as a whole, it falls short of their first album, and the second album. I urge you to review a song off of cabinet or noctambulant. The work seems more focused and coherent.

I really believe that reading the lyrics gives context to the instrumentals. Each song tells a story, and the songs are written to reflect the mood or story elements that are being presented by the singer. It really is a full band expression, and is especially evident in apparition.

7:09 my fav part so far

i wanted to like it but you perfectly put into words as to why this just did not click for me. my first thought was 'cool, it sounds like a mix of mathcore and tech death' but for the reasons you stated it just didn't quite 'work'. the song went everywhere but yet end up nowhere. for me, it seemed devoid of any sort of emotive intent. i felt nothing.

just have to listen to it til you becomes comfortable with it. It's so complex noone likes it on the first try. You have to give it some time and love, promise me its worth it. This band is beyond.

@@Goreburger. i didn't find it overbearing. i found it kinda boring. i was anticipating tempo changes with much more dissonant sections, but death metal dose not utilizes the type of dissonance that i'm fond of. for example: unsane, kissitgoodgype, deadguy, drowningman, botch, (early) harvest, skycamefalling, creation is crucifixion, discordant axis, (early) Dillinger escape plan, (early) candiria, late 90's converge... some black metal as well.
