This song is called In Maidjan, the show/live album altogether is called Lifa. You should give a listen to the song right after this one, called Alfadhirhaiti. This song in particular was used in the first trailer for the game Hellblade 2. The one after was used in the final season of the show Vikings. Also, that instrument you saw near the end is called a ravanahatha, from India

Maria Franz has an amazing voice.

You are correct to compare this with the vocal technique of "Nordics" like Aurora and Eivør. Heilung does artistic "reconstructions" of north Germanic/Proto-Scandinavian music (of which very little is known of course - we did not really write down notes until the middle ages). What they do is basically take what is known (like the survival of traditional music and singing techniques (lokk/kulning/throat singing and Joik, etc) and find likely roots for their origins. In terms of history, Heilung are covering the oldest period (Iron Age) - Wardruna covers more the Viking age/early middle ages (that a huge lump of Scandinavian bands have been at least inspired from. If you at all enjoy jazz (as the Maids clearly do) - search up the Norwegian-Polish Jan Garbarek and the album "Officium" recorded with the Hillard Ensemble back in 1994). It is not good - it is insanely and eye-watery good. As a fellow Band-Maid fan I highly recommend you to check out Heilung's latest masterpiece: Anoana. Of music released during the last 6 months it hit me as hard as Band-Maid's instrumental masterpiece "From now on". This is not hyperbolic speak to compare such different genres and musical sensibilities. Both pieces are understated in a way only musicians reaching master-levels of their craft can do. It is two genres also going insanely cinematic at the same time. As I know you as a very capable musician, I am sure you will pick up on my less-than-eloquent writing above. I LOVE! HEILUNG!!!!! Listening to their music... Helped me through Covid in January of this year (2022). I was listening to them... Rocking... And beating my chest, along with the rhythm, to keep my heart going... And my ancestors came... The walls dissipated... And there they were. Surrounding me as strong pillars. One massive, seemed like almost 11 foot tall, one in front of me, And one I could feel was about 5 foot, behind me... But I was too scared to turn around all the way. But I could feel them. Each having their own space. All on a flat plain. It was remarkable. I refused!!!!! And said... "OH NO. NOT NOW. ...NOT YET." . ...And they dissipated... And the walls came back. It was the most Surreal/Real thing I have 'Ever!' experienced.

I really appreciated your reaction as you pointed out some stuff I never noticed. Heilung refers to their performances as rituals and their live shows are a unique experience. The poem you liked is an invocation they recite at the beginning of their performances. Their first release was the result of a trade in 2014 between Christopher Juul, who had a home studio used primarily to record material with Maria Franz under the name Euzen, and Kai Uwe Faust, a tattoo artist who also wrote poetry based on Old Norse inscriptions. Chris agreed to record Kai’s poetry in return for some tattoos. Only near the end did they invite Maria to add vocals. Her vocal part in the second half of the song In Maidjan was originally improvised in the studio. At that time they had no intention of playing Heilung material live. The album Ofnir had a limited release in 2015 and they expected that to be the end of it. Then in 2017, they were asked if they’d be willing to close out Castlefest as Heilung. The full performance was filmed and posted on youTube and their career took off from there.

The high notes Maria does is called "Kulning/Kulokk/Lalning", it is how Scandinavian herding women called in their cows from the high pastures for milking. When a call is made in a valley, it rings and echoes against the mountains. The animals, a number of whom wear bells tuned so that the livestock's location can be heard, begin to respond to the call, answering back and the sound of the bells indicates that they are moving down the mountain towards their home farm. The kulokks can belong to an individual, but are sometimes family-based and are handed down so that a family's cows know they are being called and thus respond. A number of calls contain names of individual (sometimes the "lead") animals, as herds are not very large. There is a really beautiful Swedish woman called Joana Jinton that has videos of her doing it.

LIFA means LIVE, so not the title of the song ;) hehe

They made most of their instruments and clothing themselves from what I have read. Heilung (and especially the band Wardruna, which has a very similar vibe) always makes me relax when I listen to them. It's like I go in a meditative state when I put on their albums or Live stuff. It's not something I listen to constantly, but I have a lot of respect for being able to create such a mesmerizing soundscape and to be able convey so much emotion through music. It's funny that you mention Aurora since she is also from Norway and has collaborated with Wardruna live on one of their tracks "Helvegen" which is very much worth checking out.

man I've been listening to both of them for 2 years mostly everyday and im still not bored of their music, they are certainly doing something different long live both Wardruna and Heilung.

@@theroach2204 I believe the first time I listened to Wardruna was 10 years or so ago, not really sure, but it was probably about that long ago. I am relatively sure they had only released one album back then, maybe their second. I was exploring black metal back then and also enjoyed some neofolk, so I came to them because one of the members that left and Einar have been in black metal bands and I wanted to give them a shot. I didn't really keep listening to them for whatever reason even though I remember liking them, but seeing a reaction to them a couple of years ago made me check them out again and I'm glad I did. Reading about Heilung and seeing reactions to them made me check them out as well. There are probably other similar bands out there, but I haven'r really found any others even though there have been other neofolk bands I am still listening to since back then like the Finish band Tenhi and a Finish project called Nest (nestfin on bc) who uses a Kantele which gives a very unique sound. They aren't really similar to Wardruna or Heilung though, but I like them a lot and have been listening to them for well over 10 years now (probably close to 20 years for Tenhi).

I really don't know why people call this a rock band, it is not rock, it is its own thing, and has an old feel to it, older than anything modern or made in the last several centuries.

I have seen them Live in Munich last Sunday. If you ever have a chance to get them live, take it at any means

The instrument is called a Ravanahatha. It originates in India and is the oldest kind of known string instrument to be played with a bow. This one was made for Maria by a traditional Indian artisan and at the time of this concert was strung with his own daughter's hair.

My favorite music… listen to them daily! ♥️ Heilung works close with the Native American people, The ravanahatha was strung with the hair of a chiefs daughter who helped make it. You would love many of their songs. Go to a ceremony if you ever get a chance… went to see them in San Francisco, one of the most amazing things I’ve ever witnessed. They definitely can wake a soul

Ravanahatha is Indian, not Native American. Part of the Proto-Indo-European connection, the Ravanahatha is one of the instruments associated with the ancestors of the violin class of instruments

I really wish everyone would stop comparing every Norse singing queen to Aurora, Maria is a fantastically gifted singer in her own right, as is Katrine from Kalandra and many other female Scandinavian singers, they all have their own unique sound, and shouldn’t be compared to Aurora, who also has her own unique sound.

Great reaction! I like when reactors give some information about what they are listening. Heilung is mind blowing. I listened Norupo first, which is a song inspired in the way to teach the runes. Then, I discovered Krisgaldr and gosh!, my mind blowed away. Their music and performance are so primal that no matter if you understand the language, you are connected to your roots. Heilung is more than a band or project, they are a way of living, as Wardruna is too. As you mention Aurora, did you check Helvegen by Wardruna feat. Aurora? It's beautiful!
