It's about Odin, the All-Father (Alfadhir) and his many names (haiti). The beginning part mentions Draupnir (a magical ring that replicates), Gungnir (Odin's magical spear), Geri and Freki his wolves, Sleipnir his eight-legged horse, Huginn and Muninn his ravens, then the ridiculous amount of names and titles Odin has. The chanting in the beginning is an ancient Germanic warchant about dedicating their spears to war and Odin. Yes, he is throat-singing. There is no direct evidence that the Germanics and Norse did so, but they certainly encountered people who did. It sounds cool, nonetheless.

I heard a couple of Heilung songs, quite an experience and enjoyable to get into now and then. Living in small rural town area in Sweden, I was stunned to find out that our local tattoo artist is one of the warrior background singers that perform with Heilung and that people travel from all over the countries to get rune tattoos by him here. As I gather the only swede performing with them. Sometimes the world seems small.

Saw them in London last year, an incredible live show. This song was the final piece in the ritual and is about building the battle lust. My mate got so involved slapping his hands on his thighs during it, that the next day his legs were black and blue. If you get the chance see them live, you will not regret it.

I highly recommend some of the songs where Maria (the female singer) has dominate vocals. They're a little easier to vibe with for newbies. Saw these guys headlining a music festival in a farm in the English Countryside. Not sure what the village over the hills thought was going on, probably preparing to be pillaged by vikings. Their rituals are insane live, the drums vibrate you to the core. And you haven't heard Maria's vocals yet. Oh. My. Gawd.

I'm a Norse pagan. I started to explore this branch of paganism after becoming a druid in 2021. When I was perusing blogs by other Norse pagans on Tumblr, I came across a clip of this performance, and I was hooked. Heilung is less a band and more like a historical reenactment of Old Norse culture. This song is literally an invocation to Óðinn before battle. Every concert of theirs is one long ritual to the Old Gods, wights, and ancestors. Please check out their latest video, Truast.

This song is an ode to Odin, also known as The Allfather (Alfadhir). The lyrics are from a poem found on a rune stone. Translation of the lyrics: Draupnir (A magic ring owned by Odin; it drips eight exact copies of itself every nine nights.) Geri Freki (Odin's wolves) Sleipnir (Odin's eight legged horse; Loki is it's mother) Gugnir (Odin's Spear; effectively Norse mythology's aimbot) Haegolae Haegolae Haegolae Wiju Bi Gojze Gaegogae Gaegogae Gaegogae Ginu Gahelija (Hail, Hail, Hail I dedicate to the spear, Gagaga, Gagaga, Gagaga I yell resoundingly) Haugen Maunen (Odin's ravens) Ok Alfadhir heitir (And he's called Allfather) (The rest lists some of Odin's many names/titles) Fimbulthulur Fjoelnir Udhur Ulfroegni Thekkur Thudur Onski Ofnir Rognir Raudhir Grimnir Goendlir Hlefreyr Hangatyr Njolstapi Naudhvindir Jolfudhr Jafnhaur Atridhir Alfadhir Sidgrani Sigfadhir Dughirgjafi Dresvarpir Bileygur Biflidhi Margvisir Midhvitnis Londungr Launhirdir Yggr ok Yungir (Mighty Thuler, Wise one, Striver, Wolfspeaker, Welcomed one, Pale one, God of wishes, Inciter, Cheiftain, Redhead, Hooded one, Wandwielder, Famous lord, God of the hanged, Nebulizer, Needed one, Yulefather, Evenhigh, Attacking rider, Allfather, Long Beard, Father of victory, One with a missing eye, God with painted shield, Flashing eye, Shieldshaker, Leader of the crowd, One with knowledge, Shaggy-cloack wielder, Guardian of secrecy, Terrible one and Stormy one.) As a Swede, I consider this sacred music.

The people with shield and spear are known as the Heilung Army. They are stage performers pulled from the fan base to assist with live shows, often referred to as rituals. I had the pleasure of seeing them in Huntsville, Alabama last year and it was an awesome experience. As others have suggested, definitely check out their other work like "Anoana" and "Krigsgaldr". Wardruna is also another group to check out if so compelled.

This was their first ever live performance. It was at a festival in The Netherlands. They have since toured excessively. They don't do 'concerts' or 'gigs', they perform rituals. I've attended two different rituals in London in the last few years and each time, it has been spiritual and emotional. A few more songs of theirs (It's pronounced Hi-lung and is German for 'Healing') are In Maidjan (featuring the amazing vocals of Maria Franz) and Krigsgaldr (War Chant) from this same performance, Anoana (either the official video or the live performance from the Lynn Dain (London) ritual in 2023 and Traust, filmed at the ritual at Red Rocks, Denver.

Heilung used native american, polinesian and mongolian musical traditions to cosplay as "viking pagan folk music" but in truth medieval norse music should sound very different to this. Heilung is good as its own fantasy oriented genre but it pisses me of that people think this is is in any way similar to what norse music sounded during the viking age.

This is not completely true. Yes, they use synthesizers and modern techniques which weren't obviously a thing back then and we don't know for sure what the music in pre-christian/ancient european times sounded like (NOT viking age, that was way later and also, Heilung is NOOOOT viking. They are germanic and use texts and archaeological findings from whole Europe), but they have found a lot of traditional instruments and organic stuff as bones and wood that were used for making music, same as the drum. I am not sure if you know what "Core" means, but every culture way back in time had similarities to a certain point such as in rituals, understanding of nature, music for example throat singing. Europeans were also native in all their cultures thousands of years ago, way before christianity and "colonizing" existed. Kai Uwe Faust, the Shaman, is actually a real practising Shaman and Shamanism is not only included to one specific culture. He is into "Core-Shamanism" which means respecting every local sacred traditions cultures, especially natives and indigineous people have and not use them, because it is cultural appropriation. Core-Shamanism takes to use what have to be found similar throughout the world. Heilung itself say that their music is inspired by ancient music, pus please don't say they cosplay. They don't. Their clothes are pretty authentic. Marias Headdress is actually insprired by a headdress from a shaman woman, which was burried thousands of years ago in Germany. The word cosplay just doesn't sound right for this, but maybe that is just my feeling about it. One thing you are right about is that music during "viking age" or early medieval times defenitely sounds different.
