So Jojo's Bizarre Adventure 1993 Is Kinda Awesome...?

We all know and love Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for it's cultural phenom of a manga and the hyperactive, LSD trip that is the David Production Anime. Since 2012. Jojo Memes have skyrocketed into the mainstream, and with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5(aka Golden Wind) having come out just last year, the series maintains it's relevancy like few anime have. But 2012 is far from the first anime adaptation of the beloved Jojo manga. 1993 saw it's very own OVA created in a much different style than what we all know of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure now. So which is better: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure 1993 OVA vs Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

I’ve always loved how the old OVA’s had a true horror feel to it??? It felt scary and dark and full of tension all over the place vs what we know of the usual JoJo that is also dark but the tone’s usually still have a quirky vibe to them lol. Still always fun.

Dude, actually, I knew the manga before any adaptation; I thought it was a horror story, and I loved it! The OVA conveyed that feeling so well! For me THAT'S JOJO (the videogame of Vento Aureo for the Play Station did a perfect job too). Also everything made sense when I read Araki is a fan of horror movies! I felt kinda disappointed when David Productions opted for the flamboyant campy style...

I think my favorite detail of the OVA is when we see Dio's use of The World from an outsider's perspective. In the modern anime, the screen sort of blacks out for a few frames with that famous sound effect, but in the OVA, he just... disappears without a single noise. It's so eerie and it works amazingly.

  • @horriblequin
    @horriblequin4 жыл бұрын

The OVA has different things that add flavor: -The OVA is more destructive and bloody. -It's kinda more accurate when they show people and they aren't speaking Japanese but Arab and also look like Arabians. -It shows that Dio and Jotaro aren't flying as most people think, they're using their stands to jump. -It makes more sense having Jotaro surviving the oil tanker than the road roller, the attack with the oil tank happens in the last 2 seconds of Dio's stopped time which makes sense with Jotaro's 2 seconds of time stop. Meanwhile, with the road roller with the counter-attack of Jotaro, it seems like 5 seconds, leading Araki to state that in his prime Jotaro could stop time for 5, not 2 seconds. The OVA is cool.

Same. I think it’s better adapted objectively. The whole “Why can Jotaro and DIO fly” issue is never brought up as it’s shown that they jump, and Polnareff’s entrance blends with Jotaro’s headshot MUCH better. The fight choreography is a little worse, but the canonical changes make it way better in my opinion, as well as the changes mentioned in the video.

I liked the dialogue in the buildup to Kakyoin's death in the OVA, His resolve shining through while Dio is patronizing him is such a great moment on its own. I also like how rather than slowly walk over while monologuing and punching cats, DIO full on sprints through a crowd of people to get to Joseph while time was stopped. It felt like he was taking things much more seriously.

Yeah I like the sound design in the OVA a lot. The DIO fight, despite lacking the ZA WARUDO sound, has an even more eerie effect by showing DIO there one moment and just gone the next, with the object he was holding falling down.

I binged all 13 episodes yesterday, and a lot of the changes are pretty awesome, even the stuff before Egypt. The Justice fight is significantly changed for the better, and some of the minor changes make a lot of sense. Instead of Avdol recognizing the fly Star Platinum drew, Kakyoin is the one who has the idea to check what kind of fly it is. It's a subtle change but it reinforces that each crusader has their own strengths to offer, and how they are so powerful together. As a standalone work, the OVAs are really strong. It shows a lot of restraint and builds up a feeling of genuine dread, which I didn't feel at all in the DP adaption. I kind of wish we got an adaption like this for Part 5 tbh, would be very interesting to see. At that point it'd feel like a Tarantino film with Stands thrown in, which I'd kill to see.

The OVA is honestly my preferred version of part 3. a lot of people reject the OVA, not because it's necessarily worse, but simply because it isn't what they expect from JoJo. Most people don't want subtle presentation from JoJo; the series is known for how wacky it is and so that's what gets the most representation in the fandom. The OVA, at least to me, represents what I love about JoJo, it's that, while it is wacky and out there and dare i say, bizarre, it's still, in spite of that an extremely strong narrative that deserves credit for being more than what it seems to be on the surface. I think that OVA's reception by most as a lesser product when compared to its source material and its later adaptation is disappointing. Because it isn't, not at all, as was said in this video, it's a different take that accents certain strengths of the manga and subdues others for the sake of making itself as good of a version of what it's attempting to be as it can. The OVA, to me, represents the sincerity in JoJo as a series, it demonstrates that there's more to JoJo than the word "bizarre" in the title. It's also an adventure, a century sprawling, gripping and a genuinely captivating adventure.

I mostly don't like it because it rushes through the plot and skips like 60% of it, (though I know a lot of people seem to think part 3 drags on with repetitive encounters, which I can understand) has essentially no background music or even ambience coupled with awkward dialogue pauses and at times just straight up unintentionally hilarious voice acting, especially the english dub. I do like how they did Dio's time stop, though, with him just straight up vanishing at some parts, making it kinda suspenseful. Overall, I enjoy watching it as it's own thing, though only ironically for how awkward it is, and vastly prefer the anime or manga to experience the story of part 3, but I can see how some might prefer it if they view the series differently from me

What I love about this OVA is that they took the source material and did cinematic adaptation in a very successful way. It wasn't about getting those memorable sting poses; they took the plot and then made it into an 80's movie, which is effectively is! The pacing of the final battle was great, and the subtle change like making Jotaro stomp the manhole cover instead of ambiguously appear, or the entire section in the desert and Avdol's use of his rings felt so much more suspensful because they put beat and pacing first, and then adaptation second. Plus the old animation style really gives it a lot of charm!

Little late to the comments on this. The OVA is great in it's own way. This was my gateway to Jojo and will always hold a special place in my heart and there are a lot of things in it that is different but left me in awe in its own way. Introduced to N"Doul's stand with a water hand ripping a pilots head off and pulling it into a canteen amazing. Loved his line during his death as well about why he followed Dio in that even evil needs a savior. As some mentioned just how dark and grisly certain moments are like the senator. As the video said very much enjoyed the lack of music at certain moments really did leave it more intense. I don't look at it as "Oh this isn't the same and should be forgotten" I truly feel it stands on it own as an unique adaptation of Jojo. As I said without it I wouldn't have been a Jojo fan as long as I have been.

I still find it pretty heartbreaking that its been buried because of the controversy as well as the DavidPro anime, even if I do love that we have a more faithful adaptation these days. It seems to unfair to APPP that this may never have an actual rerelease and it adds to the tragedy (for me, at least) that Satoshi Kon worked on this and it’s practically lost media by this point, if not for proliferation on the internet. I collected some cels from the OVA production since media preservation is a fascinating subject to me.

this gave me chills. definitely going to give the ova a watch now. would you recommend the other episodes of the ova that were added later? also, as far as anime that were given some freedom to make it their own, yu yu hakusho is a great example. i do know that at least a bunch of the earlier stuff was cut, and i know in the dub some changes were made with character motivations, also the dub is amazing, both hilarious and suspenseful and everything in between, but most importantly, the actual animation and visuals were given so much freedom to create something totally original and wild. a lot of the scenes hardly even look like they're from the same show. also there are some completely brutal scenes where everything is monochrome but it flashes from red to white, so unfortunately on a couple rare occasions it might be a bit dangerous to watch if you have epilepsy. even still, those crazy scenes that even hurt my eyes to watch instill this visceral sense of dread and horror, and they're used perfectly. i also think hunter x hunter 1999 achieves this as well. some of the scenes in hxh 1999 are just absolutely dripping with atmosphere. it also has a rare case of good filler, in which there's more time given to showing gon on his home island (including the scenes with Kite, which are actually canon but the 2011 series cut for some stupid reason) a whole episode of leorio and gon meeting as they try and find a boat, an entire additional section added to the hunter exam, as well as some more scenes of leorio's backstory. now, some people feel like this makes the hunter exam arc drag on, but it was my first introduction to the series and i enjoyed every minute of it, and i think being given that extra time to breathe really settles you into the world. also, in general everything *is* a lot more atmospheric and grounded, and you aren't constantly reminded that you're watching a shonen. lastly, the yorknew city arc is *absolutely* above and beyond the 2011 version. the artistic decisions and the moody lighting turn the grim feeling of the arc up to 11, and there are some absolutely *gorgeous* stills of the city used as establishing shots. it is legitimately beautiful.

It’s interesting how incredibly popular Jojo is today. I remember in 2003 or so, a bunch of Jojo sound clips became early internet memes (wryyyyyy, steamroller smash, “muda da”). It was well known in Japan, but the anime was quite obscure in the US-like, even at anime conventions, you might see one or two JoJo cosplays if any at all. And then nothing for over a decade and a half. I think it continued to maintain meme status in Japan but no one but old school fans knew about it in the US until, boom, *everyone* knew about it.

Damn right it is! If only we had the movie from 2007 (whose discord server I happen to run) available for viewing to cap off the APPP trilogy of sorts. It rarely gets spoken of and is forgotten even more than the OVA As for why the OVA is so different? Mostly correct. According to bonus features and interviews from the DVDs, the project is seen by Araki himself as a very nice greatest-hits style adaptation of the manga's best moments for fans who already read and loved the manga, and that was sort of the intention going in. Another reason was they were given the budget and go-ahead for only six episodes, and chose to adapt only the more popular and recent second half as to not totally massacre the story. It was their hope that one day they could bring Junichi Hayama (the character designer for all JoJo adaptations from 1993-2007, and the main creative figurehead behind them) back for an adaptation of the beginning of part 3, which happened in 2000. Unfortunately, the '93 OVA is absurdly pricey to get officially due to being recalled after a 2008 controversy over the accidental inclusion of the Quran in the 2000 OVA, which in an ironic twist of fate is still dirt cheap to buy since its release predated the controversy by MANY years, whereas the '93 OVA had hardly circulated in north america by that time. It's never been in print in any country ever since, and the studio behind the OVAs/Movie has never done a project of their own ever since, now relegated to doing supporting work for other studios' projects. It's unfortunate, especially since the now-lost 2007 movie was lost in the shuffle of controversy and ended up shelved indefinitely, and as of last week it's been 13 years ongoing now that it's been impossible to view. It's a tragedy, really, would have loved to see the team's unique take on part 1, as well as the few scenes that were adapted only in that version.

@Jotaro97 They hired out Junichi Hayama for the overall design of the JoJo adaptations, who otherwise wasn't involved in the studio afaik, and it starts to make a lot more sense when one keeps in mind he was a veteran of the peak 80s era of muscle-man anime productions like Fist of the North Star. He was a great fit imo, and I prefer his designs vastly over the 2012 adaptation.

It kind of disappoints me that more people (especially people outside the fandom) don’t know about the OVA, it’s definitely a hidden gem.

This OVA is one of the greatest I've ever seen ... and god have I seen a lot those since the 90's Even the music at the beginning, when the sacrifice takes place is kind of mesmerizing, sad and deep, and very far from what you could have expected from a Jojo's video adaptation It feels more mature than the material it is based on. Big place in my heart, my memory and my soul Your analyse of this masterpiece is spot on

The main reason I love the OVA is the larger scale destruction and less 'jojo' in it. The fights in jojo feel underwhelming for how powerful stands like the world are. And with the constant posing and more heavy focus on the 'strategy' aspects, it can't appeal to everyone. I'm serious when I say that if the jojo anime was remade to be something like the OVA (faster pace, larger destruction) then it would be a field day for anyone who loves heavy action anime. And honestly, it might have been better to have it animated in that way. (I don't know the animation studio for the ova) in the anime, it's a one-to-one copy, which isn't great as the manga panels in jojo don't translate well to animation, and aren't particularly fluid.

Been telling y'all for years that it really isn't as bad as you think it is. Seriously, the atmosphere and framing of the final battle is phenomenal, damn-near perfect, and the animation is so silky and intricate. Sure there are some inconsistencies, but I am a sucker for good animation.

I really liked how much darker and more serious the OVA was. It was also really detailed. I dunno but I really prefer the OVA over David Productions.

This was the first JoJo i ever watched, and i really liked it. The first episode is a great introduction to stands, how the combat in JoJo works, and the characters. When i watched the anime later i was disapointed in how much worse they were at building up tention
