    This is why I feel like Rory Gilmore is the stereotypical millenial girl. We were her, and we believed we had it all figured out. We follow what people in position of authority told us was the path to success, and we thought we were so much smarter than everyone else for doing this. It's so embarassing now.

    After I rewatched Gilmore Girls post-“Commie glow-up”, I realized how tilting this show is. How Rory went from Stars Hollow High to Chilton (with golfer insurance money) to freaking Yale of all places, is horrifying. Imagine if Lorelai hadn’t had rich parents. Meritocracy is such a shit myth, how people believe it is beyond me. What really gets me though is the pretentious books. Reading is huge part of the show, esp. with the whole thing with Jess. But if you look up some of the obscure, fancy books they mention, they’re really bad. All sorts of old-fashioned nonsense! Some books are fine or even good, but the education Rory and Paris get is so wack. Yet, because it’s rich and fancy, Yale:tm: degrees are minted for them. Do I really need to talk about the semester off? The one where she stayed in the pool house? Rory’s dream is also so strange. Ignoring what that “bring Asia to you” episode implies, her goal of being a journalist is really just a dream of spending huge amounts of money to go be a tourist everywhere. She talks about wanting meaningful journalism, but she acts like she wants an immersive movie-like experience. As much as I don’t like the reboot, I like that Rory was somewhat humbled. This show is still my favorite along with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and I will continue to binge it, because (a) I love Sookie and Jackson and (b) it’s still the only soapy drama show I can take. Nevertheless, I can’t watch it the same way I did as an innocent high schooler with no knowledge of the world’s modus operandi. I can’t.

    For me, Rory was one of the only characters that existed in the 2000s that was super academics-focused and "cool" for doing so. No other character on television spoke to me, it was extremely uncool back then to want to study and learn and have goals, and to want to sacrifice other things for your studies. The closest other relatable role model I had growing up was Hermione, but she was constantly made fun of by Harry and Ron for working hard. For that reason I think Rory was an important character for those of us constantly being made fun of for being "smart". But even back then I could recognize how flawed and privileged she and Lorelai were. The grandparents just covered Rory's entire tuition, why is Lorelai yelling at them in the next episode as if they were terrible people? Why does Rory always act like she did nothing wrong, even while cheating on her bf? I quit watching once she ran away from Yale after one tiny incident, and her grandmother just decided to take her to Europe to feel better. Life doesn't work like that for me and it was pretty upsetting to me that rich people had that option.

Everyone is like you have to network and have these fake-relationships with everyone so you can use them to get a job, and if you don’t network you won’t get anywhere! Also, I spend at least an hour writing a cover letter, and another decent chunk of time creating my resume (and rewriting all of its info on your website bc for some reason you can’t just read my resume) and then I don’t even hear anything from the company, or I have a first interview and then get ghosted! I cover my eyebrows with this mixture every night and spend 2 minutes massaging it in. It brought back some hair that had disappeared. The growth isn't perfectly equal though with some chunk growing back with a few holes. It also helped with my lashes, but it is important to be careful not to get any in your eyes if you try this. My lashes are getting much longer than they've ever been which is usually pretty short. I also put some aloes on during days where I don't go out, but that's mostly to moisturize them which cannot hurt. I just started taking biotin too since I noticed that my hair has been growing faster since I started doing occasional egg washes during the pandemic. But I don't know if that will help with my eyebrows. I am hoping it will. Sorry for the long answer. This is everything I've been experimenting with in the last few months. Hope this can help.

    You remind me of a more confident version of my high school self LOL. I was obsessed with grades but it was because I had no other source of self-esteem. I also had undiagnosed ADHD which made things...interesting and chaotic. I've also gone through a similar change over the years.

  • @tuuudes3449

    @tuuudes3449

    I was very similar as a kid, except that I was tested for ADHD on the recommendation of a teacher. The psychologist I talked to said I didn't have ADHD, and that I was a gifted child who was just bored. While it was true that I got good grades and wasn't uniquely distracted or disruptive when compared to my classmates, there's definitely a reason my teachers noticed my disruptive behavior more than that of others. That psychologist's assessment was possibly the most (unintentionally) damaging thing that happened to me as a child, because it allowed my dad to think that I was a "normal" kid, and to continue punishing me for what I now strongly suspect were manifestations of neurodivergence. My parents believed (and so did I to an extent) that because I found most aspects of school easy at the time, any problems I had were solely a result of my conscious choices, which could be changed through negative reinforcement. The consequences of that belief have shaped my life in ways that my parents and I could never have imagined. I still haven't developed appropriate ways of dealing with certain types of conflicts/setbacks, and the possibilities for my future have been progressively been closed off over the years. At this point my only hope for the future is that I can get a stable long-term job that keeps me from being homeless, but even that looks increasingly unlikely. I've worked a disgusting amount of unpaid overtime at all of the jobs I had, but I've come to realize that it only served to move me slightly down the list of people who get laid off whenever staffing budgets get cut. Stability is a pipe dream in this profoundly anti-human economic system.

    Oh my god you guys are me. Got diagnosed at age 23, in my final year of Med School. I was told by my own psychiatric teacher (an old man) that I couldn’t be ADHD otherwise I wouldn’t have make it through the college. Ends out I didn’t struggle because I am in some extent gifted so school was easy for me. But all the OTHER things- losing things, sleep disorder, having difficulties learning to drive or lacing my shoes- these were the struggle. And when adulthood came, and the college- that’s when troubles begin. So blessed I never kept it out my head. My life is so easier now with treatment, and I have recovered from the fear of grades. Cheers from Brazil

    See, now that I'm in my 30s I found working hard in my high school days to be a rewarding experience. I never worked that hard again ever since, and I am muuuuch lazier than Katherout (who is still working hard now on KZread - I admire your work ethic because mine disappeared in my 20s 😂), but for the rest of my life I would know that I was capable of accomplishing that much, and I did. The stuff I learned didn't matter, but the experience was one of the only things in life I did that was entirely focused on myself (as opposed to getting married, having a child, getting promoted at work etc). I would never be in a position again where all I cared about was myself and learning about the world, but at that age it was something I was privileged enough to experience and focus on, if that makes sense? That said, I am a totally different person now too. The popular dude videos on KZread on how to be more productive crack me up because, why are they trying to be so damn productive 24/7? Already been there done that, taking my break now and enjoying what I have.

    Hi Katherine! I would like to share my story with you. I’ve been an avid watcher of your videos- your dorm room tour was on REPEAT the summer before I went to college. My grades took a nosedive in sophomore year of high school because I got distracted by a newfound social life. I felt horrible- I felt like my future was ruined and my life was over. It seems so silly now but it really felt like the end of the world. Frankly at this time in my life your videos made me feel bad- I was jealous and angry at people who had strong work ethics. I knew I was smart but just had to apply myself. I worked my butt off in junior and senior year and completely turned my grades around- while maintaining my social life! I made wonderful memories and got accepted to my dream school. I couldn’t believe this change in my life. Your USC videos were inspiring and exciting. In university I went through ups and downs and came into myself to learn how to value all parts of my life, not just academic success. I love your honesty and newfound realizations. You are teaching me that there are many versions of myself that I will grow into. I can’t wait to meet them all in the future. I hope it doesn’t make you feel bad that those early videos made me feel sad or jealous. I have learned so much since, and have learned from you and your journey. I have learned how to pick myself up when things are so low they seem impossible, and I’ve learned that even in the lows, we may learn and appreciate more than we ever thought possible. I don’t usually comment on videos but I hope you’ll see this!

    As someone who subscribed after, and because of, where your class consciousness journey (or whatever we might call it) has taken you, I thoroughly enjoyed having the gasping breathless feeling that this video gave me. Not just my face, but my whole body repeatedly tried to cringe. And before it seems like I’m being mean, there’s a reason that it made me have that reaction. It’s because I know I was every bit as bad, and probably much worse! Solidarity! So thanks for sharing. Very fun, also practically a workout!

    It can be healthy to examine your past as a part of introspection, so long as you do so knowing to forgive your younger self for being wrong or uninformed-evolving from that initial naivete is actually gaining wisdom-and have a sense of humor. I feel like you’re exactly who they’re talking about when they say college makes people more liberal. University is 100% not all about the grades. Learning is #1 for sure, but as you said, critical thinking etc and actual comprehension of the material So much more important than just being able to regurgitate content. But #2 having life experience, forming new relationships and growing and understanding the world and yourself is also such a big essential part of it.

    This was hilarious. I used to have a hyped up intellectual ego, I think partly due to some insecurity. But that insecurity made me prime bait for an abusive relationship, which absolutely fried my ego. I have been doing super deep work ever since, and things are beginning to blossom again. I am glad I learned my lesson about how dumb I must have appeared. A super smart intellectual who was totally out of touch with my deep self and street smarts, or intuitions (which will most definitely keep you alive more than your brains will). 💗🧬💎🧬💗

    I remember that video at 14:03 (or potentially another one) rubbing me off so wrong back in the day because one of the things you mentioned was wishing you had talked to your friends' parents more back in high school because they apparently had great jobs and what not, and so you wished you had networked more (which is valid), but yeah as a low-income, first-generation immigrant child my ass could have never! 😩It just spoke to the social + economic capital that you had and I was missing, and it really struck a never with me to the point where every now and then I would think about it and get mad for no real reason (simply because I am a hater). Anyway, glad to have stumbled upon this channel again, and to see how much you have grown!

    I remember I started watching you out of straight jealously and admiration as I am about the same age as you as USC was my dream school, but I didn’t get in and you did. Now THAT was unhealthy on my end too as I it always put me in the “why didn’t you just try harder” mood, but as I’ve gotten older and realized how it really doesn’t matter and have loved watching your more recent videos. I am still in the same profession in was my dream to get into!

In case you have any advice for this change and learning how to find value in other things than good grades etc. I would be very grateful if you could share it:) it was already very helpful to listen to you talk about your old thinking patterns and seeing that you moved on from them. Wow, the highschool you would have hated me. I think I was the complete opposite. Drop out. Learn on my own. Don't get any degree. Just learn for the sake of my own fulfillment. Then I realize that I did things the worst way possible. Lots of work with absolutely nothing to show for it. And yet, I ended up in a similar place. I remember talking about how a 40 hour work week is made to keep people poor. It was so twisted in a completely different manner. Kudos to you for the reflection. I can't imagine putting this together for a lot of my most cringey thoughts.

    I must say I was like you when I was younger too!! I see so much of my past self in your past self, and so much of my current self in yourself right now. I started watching your videos when I was about to start uni and I was the same, hustlin' for a high GPA and a spot in a highly sought after grad program. Now I'm rethinking my whole life lol - instead of wanting to rise up the ranks of corporate life, I just want a good job that gives me the money and flexibility to pursue my other passions and interests outside of work, a good team and interesting enough work. It's really nice to see someone on KZread go on the same journey as me :)
