I'd finished this playthrough months ago and I've just been playing Yakuza instead (Majima is Literally Me). So my bad for not getting around to this. But it's done, here's how 5 star and Monoblos went, I haven't gone back to do the secret quests yet so if you wanna see that we can!
Tried some new stuff with the scriptwriting and narration too. Lemme know how it works for you!

Some QoL like gathering while moving or only gathering once and getting all items or picks etc not breaking and not taking item space is fine but if change how the combat is, sounds or even the heal flex then what's the point. Might as well just stay in 5th gen.

    So glad to see you going back playing old old school Monster Hunter, and like the style of recapping the streams/playthrough! I've been playing P2G/Freedom Unite lately, which is basically the first MH games I played for like hundreds of hours when I was in school (only had a PSP, played Portable/Freedom and P2nd/Freedom 2nd for a bit). Also replayed P3rd before Elden Ring came out. Gotta say these old MH games are such pure experiences, really restricted movements/deliberate actions, scare resources and zenny, sometimes questionable hitboxes / AI, and not op set building.

    First MH was Tri. Been playing every game since. Finally emulated and played MH1 a few months ago, and boy it was an experience. Used Sword and Shield for the first time ever in any game for a bit, simply because I knew it could be upgraded into Dual Blades eventually. Then after a few quests, I proceeded to simply grind out a velociprey quest in order to mine a tone of ore in Forest & Hills because that was all that was needed to max out the ore Dual Blades which were really good. Then proceeded to beat the rest of the game with those. Noteable encounters were Rathalos being an absolute chore, getting pretty lucky with Rathian and Gypceros and having little bullfango interference, and needing to abandon the Cephalos liver quest initially because not prepared enough. Plesioth by far was a true nightmare, taking 9 of the 10 sonic bombs I brought and all my healing with 2 carts. The close range of DB just did not play well with Plesi. Monoblos was plenty hard too, namely the tail spin hitting between the legs, which it's charge surprisingly didn't. Also, not only could his roar lead to an unavoidable hit, but his roar flat-out caused the stun status on me from time to time. Overall difficult but satisfying when I beat him. I don't regret my time with MH1 at all. I adjusted to the jank fairly quickly. And for me, the raw atmosphere of the game has yet to be topped. And I genuinely mean this when I say I enjoyed my time more with MH1 then I did World.

    While there isn't alot I remember of my first playthrough of MH1 (maybe for the better, my brain has probably shut the memories out due to trauma), the *one* bastard I can vividly recall is Plesioth. There used to be a pretty well known strategy to stand in the distance in order to bait his beam, alongside Gravios, but that still didn't make the fight any more enjoyable. Also, have fun escaping the clutches of Yakuza. RGG Studios will never let you go. Until you're forced to suffer through 3 Remastered, though, that might break you. But I promise it gets better.

    I actually went back and soloed all of Freedom Unite and after dabbling a bit in Monster Hunter 1, the only conclusion I can make is, there's no point in going back that far. I know you recommended Portable 3rd as the way to get the best of the old and new, but if you really want that gen 1 experience, gen 2 is just that but more. FU has more monsters alongside the old monsters with their same baseline AI, more weapons, old weapons have added mechanics, the same maps as 1, new maps, its literally just the complete version of Monster Hunter 1, before Capcom went back and reinvented some of the core gameplay aspects with Tri and the rest of gen 3. That being said, to anyone curious, I would actually recommend playing Freedom Unite. Don't misunderstand, the sandpaper toilet roll analogy from part 1 is pretty on point lol. The game is very difficult. However, I personally really enjoy difficult games, especially those from Capcom, so it was a good fit for me, and in the long run it made me a much better Monster Hunter player. Sometimes it's just nice to enjoy the simpler things. Just remember to respect those instant charges please.

    Honestly, while your experience with the game playing as a kid did put you at an advantage; I'm someone who played this for the first time a few years ago and if you're willing to play the game the way it wants to be played (instead of whinging about how it's not as polished as newer games) you pick up on things pretty quickly, and they stick with you (for better or for worse.) I've even gone on to clear every village quest a second time with a different weapon since then (SnS and then Lance.) That being said, I didn't know about using frogs to re-aggro plesioth when he decided to fuck off like that. I imagine the same strat works in Old Desert quests in MHFU so I'll make sure to keep it in mind.

  • @CeraCymmetry

    Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, but what do you mean by “playing the game how it wants to be played?” It has a slow grind that requires you to devote 10-20m of another quest target to gather and combine. What did you also mean by “whinging that it isn’t as polished”? The whole focus of a video like this is to show what’s improved and what was way worse/different back in the “old days”, criticism or observation isn’t complaining or whining my man.

  • @randomnpc445

    @@CeraCymmetry My apologies man, I didn't mean to imply you were whinging about how it's an unpolished game, nor do I think that's what your criticism was in the slightest (they're all pretty valid criticisms honestly). I think both videos are great and as a look back at how things were back in the day they do a great job of showcasing the progress that we've seen over the course of 18 years while still remaining respectful to what MH1 was trying to do with the digital equivalent of sticks and stones. My comments about "playing the game how it wants to be played" is in reference to how much slower you have to take things both in terms of the length of the grind, as well as preparation for, and engaging in, battle. In newer games it's a lot easier to just kinda fling yourself into a hunt with minimal preparation and still turn out alright, but in MH1 if you aren't willing to put in the time to slowly build up your item pouch in preparation for a large monster, it's going to really kick your teeth in and make things way more unfun. And because of how much slower the game is in just about every aspect, a lot of players would simply give up and disregard it entirely on how poorly it's aged compared to newer entries in the series. It's not a perfect game by any means, and I'd struggle to even consider it a good game by any definition that wasn't made up by a masochist, but I think there's a lot of merit to doing what you've done with these two videos where you sit down and really try to play the game and understand what it expects of you as a player (even if that expectation might seem absurd or archaic by today's standards), rather than play for 10 minutes, laugh at the awkward controls and then say "it's bad don't play it."

  • @CeraCymmetry

    @CeraCymmetry

    @@randomnpc445 oh its all good man, I completely see where you're coming from! Apologies if I sounded aggressive, you know it goes with KZread comments lmao. But yeah, I think a good way to talk about it would be saying that the item pouch is a resource like how the stamina in Dark Souls is a resource, and it gets less important, you know? I will say it is always gonna be a rougher experience compared to older games, I hope I haven't given off the impression of "right analog stick attack means bad" lmao. I think it's worth it to see, but it's completely understandable if it's not for every hunter. I think we're in agreement here tbh, much like how I've said for Frontier. Give it a proper try and then form an opinion!

You mentioned Plessy's size. Oddly enough, in every game including MH1, I struggled more with the tail spin than the hip check simply because Plessy is so damned huge that when it spins, the tail hits behind your guard and sometimes the hitbox is so big you can't always roll from it safely.

    You don't need to know how Plesioth works if you take a hint from the fact that his physical attacks tend to wreck Blademasters. Just make a gun. By the time you hit Plesioth, the Arbalest is easily accessible and more than adequate in dispatching the big lug with ease. Hunters, perhaps more than any other type of player, tend to approach problems with a "hit it harder" mentality and refuse to get creative in order to overcome challenges. This leads to unnecessary frustrations with monsters like Plesioth who, in reality, are purpose-built to encourage the development of strategic thinking in fledgling hunters. TL;DR Plesioth is fine. Players just need to try something else and see what works.

    Reminds me how as a child I have created a lot of weapons and set dedicated for specific monsters (Freedom 2). Hammer for Rathalos, Lao and Shen Gaoren, for example. Very easy to lock Rath on the ground because every time he attack from air, you know exactly where his head will be to combo him, and a good weapon for a quick burst on the two giants. SnS for everything fast, GS for Tigrex, bow for Rajang, LS for ceanataur and hermitaur, etc.

Can't believe someone at Capcom thought that was ok back then. MH1 and Freedom are an interesting piece of history of how this franchise started but it's not a good game at all.
