What makes this performance so great is that Sohyang didn't _outshine_ the message of the song. She didn't make it about her - she told the story and delivered it in a way that made you appreciate not just her voice, but the whole composition, and the music. Even though damn she *SANG* , her artistry painted the picture of Arirang; not her face.

Meowmeow Yoongi So Hyang is a 40 year old South Korean vocalist with roots in gospel, but she can and has sung many genres. She is known for her phenomenal vocal technique and control that has allowed her to develop easily the best upper register that has ever existed. She’s one of the best vocalists of all time and she’s probably the best in the world right now. To make things even more impressive, she’s also a cancer survivor and constantly struggles with other health issues including pneumonia, liver disease, and a heart condition. Nonetheless, her voice continues to improve despite her already being in her 40s. What I like in this is that aside from delivering the notes perfectly, it is like she is telling us a story while singing and the way she is smiling at the audience is really soothing. This really brings me in tears or goosebumps everytime I watch.

She has been a gospel singer for many years, so her interaction with the audiences is always on point. She knows how to inspire people.

The song “Arirang” holds so much cultural significance to the people of Korea and its absolutely amazing the way she sang it it literally made me cry. It’s a song of happiness and a song of perseverance that has been passed down through generations for hundreds maybe thousands of years and it’s honestly truly amazing when such a talented person adds their own flare to such a beautiful piece of music. This video was ASTONISHING! It gave me goosebumps all over!

I'm so happy I decided to take the leap and teach myself Korean (한국어) because I get an even greater appreciation for 민요 and other traditional Korean music, being able to follow along with the lyrics. Korean music kept bringing me back to the language but now the language keeps bringing me back to Korean music and I've fallen in love with the language itself lol 😂

I’m Lebanese but the way people are united in a moment of love like this is so utterly beautiful to me. Music can do that.

I cannot imagine how vigorous and diciplined her vocal trainings are, I do not believe a voice like hers is simply a gift, that's what blew my mind

yep. i listened to her debut song (called Teacher or something) when she was 18 and it was a hot mess, but okay overall. she kept going flat on so many notes and it was nothing special. fast forward to this decade and she is one of the best singers ever

So Hyang used to be a screamer w/o vocal training and then she said she got training to use her mixed voice by someone called smthg Riggs lol for about 4 weeks and after that she did self training yea i feel talentless

Sohyang is excellent, but I'd like to mention those artists behind her making this piece as magical as it is. They are all excellent.

It is so beyond me how this is a losing performance. Besides the fact that her vocals are FLAWLESS, from an outsider's perspective the song choice seems more out of the ordinary and definitely has a deep meaning to the singer as well as the audience she's singing to. Performance shouldn't only be about vocals (even though hers are peerless), she has the grace and good sense to bring her audience on a journey with her. Immaculate. Just perfectly done.

Now that you mention it, I can't think of any Asian singers that are really relevant in the US. I can think of black, latino, white, and people from the UK who are all popular here, but no Asian artists. That's odd.

This is the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. The fact she did not make it all about herself and wanted the crowd to join in because she knows the true meaning of the song and how powerful and meaningful it is- is just an all around incredible genius masterpiece on her part. Very well done

Lovely Angel She is not screaming. She is belting the song. And it's very hard to resonace (the quality of being louder and clear) as you get higher pitch. I really don't know their language but I can tell that she is a professional singer.

K.P.T Asian languages? Korean is a language isolate and has no known relatives. Similarly Japanese has no known relatives in their language tree. japonic and Koreanic are the language families that really only have one modern version.

its been 7 years now since I last saw this but still my number 1 song performance. It feels like after being in a very long, challenging yet meaningful journey you finally reach your destination. It feels like an adventure worth looking back, recorded in history, and a memory that will forever engraved in your mind, heart, and soul. This performance transcends language, culture, and time. It's 2024 but it is still my go to feel good song performance!

@suzy suki Castrato is an italian word and it means men without testicles in italian, she's an incredibly well trained soprano; but I wouldn't define her as castrato. That's a term that is used also in music to address males, like countertenor males.
