So Good I Purchased 44 of Them - 8 Years Later - Snugpak Jungle Blanket Updated Review

Ғылым және технология

8 years ago I reviewed a simple but versatile blanket - a modern day woobie blanket of sorts - I loved it then and I continue to love the product now.
This is the Snugpak Jungle Blanket - a top notch product that I can easily recommend for many different reasons :
It’s highly Versatile, cost-effective, and built to last and in this episode I am going over my 8 year review of this product and I will be sharing why I have purchased 44 of these blankets to date.

Snugpak Jungle Blanket Stats :
Materials :
Microdiamond Shell top - water repellant
SuperSoft lining - moisture wicking
Travelsoft Insulation - retains heat even when wet - easily washable
Treatment :
The outer shell and the inner lining has been treated with a Paratex antibacterial treatment - this discourages the growth of bacterial which means you don’t have to wash the blanket as often as you would with similar products.
Temperature rating :
The company claims that the blanket is dual rated for 45F and 36F.
I’m not entirely sure what this means exactly and they don’t state - my advice is to use this blanket with regular clothing - socks, pants, shirt, with temps down to 55f. At 55F and above most people are going to be comfortable unless you are someone who runs cold. You will also need a good r-value sleeping pad for cold weather camping to be comfortable.
Dimensions Stored :
7x7 for the regular -
I don’t have the larger version and don’t have that figure for you.
Dimensions Unfolded :
Regular : 76 inches by 64 inches
Large : 90 inches by 72 inches
Weight :
Regular : 1.5lbs for the blanket / 1.7lbs with the storage bag
Large : 2lbs for the blanket / 2.2lbs with the storage bag included
Prices :
Regular : $60
Large : $70
Back when I reviewed this in 2015, these ran $40!

I totally lucked out I found a brand new one at a rummage sale for 1 dollar and a snug pack ionosphere for 10 dollars. The gentleman bought them for his son for boy scouts and his son quit boy scouts and never used them. I almost felt guilty that I paid so little, but they wanted all their stuff gone and I was glad to take them off their hands.

I went through a snugpak phase a few years back. I bought a blanket for all of my kids and my wife. I just looked up the blankets I bought and the regular size was $24, XL $38, hamock quilt $33, the poncho liner $53 and the softie elite was $78. The prices are crazy now. I wore the poncho liner a couple times on hikes in the snow. The temp was in low 30's. I had to take it off because I was over heating. The thing is crazy warm. Great for sitting around but not hiking. I would still buy Snugpak products even at todays prices. Assuming the quality is the same. The hammock quilt and poncho are definitely my favorites.

Pretty much saved my life in Namibia last year.. I took a simple summer bag with me because a) Africa and b) who reads the instructions they send you. Turns out it gets Very close to Zero C/32F at night in the Namibian desert in a tent. I had brought the Snugpack blankets (1 regular 1 XL ) for chilly driving in open vehicles and as a pillow.. I had added some buttons to my XL across the bottom and 1/3 up the side.. Tucked my bag into this Snug-glove and slept like a baby.

I have had a Snugpak Blanket for about 8 years as well. I use it regularly, have never had to wash it yet and for certain, it keeps me comfortable even down to about 60 F - 16C . This allows me to sleep in my bedroom with just this blanket with the thermostat set to 60F which saves a lot on the heat=ing bill over the Winter.

I have this product and been using it for two years now. Solo camping, motorcycle camping and family camping. Extremely good quality and very versatile. I have always been a massive fan of snugpak from when serving in the British army. Lots of the lads (including me) had their softie jacket and a few other items like sleeping bags etc - my jacket is still going strong 22 years later and sleeping bag is around the same age. That being said, I get your point about quality vs price recently with them. Seems to be since they broadened their product line that the quality has dipped.

Please make sure the girls' blankets are the same quality, even if they are from a different brand. Otherwise, they may be discouraged from camping by a bad gear experience. If they're not comparable, just get the girls the olive one. Most will appreciate a quality item they can use for years more than they'd appreciate a hot pink item that doesn't hold up. And great review as always, I'll probably end up getting one of these myself.

I have four of them, bought way back when you could still get them for $25 a piece. My experience has been similar, they have held up really well and are really handy. The only con I would add to this list: you really shouldn't store them long-term in the compression sack they come with and they are a tight fit when you want to get them back into the sack. But they do compress down to get very compact when you want to hike with them. I mainly use them as an extra layer with a warm weather bag. A cold weather bag in unexpectedly hot weather is almost as miserable as a warm weather bag in unexpectedly cold weather, and this thing buys you a lot of flexibility in your sleep system for not a lot of extra weight. You can sleep under just the jungle blanket on a warmer night, or in just the sleeping bag, or put it over the sleeping bag if things turn cold. Temps in the desert, the mountains and the shoulder seasons can be unpredictable, but this thing gives you the ability to adjust to whatever the reality in your tent turns out to be, within reason. They aren't for winter camping but I use them in the other three seasons.

The XL version is 91cm wide when doubled-over, as such, you can actually wrap it under and over you to trap more warmth, however, at that point, you may as well have bought an insulated sleeping bag.

I also have a regular sized blue one for summer tent camping; though as Luke stated, it does tend to run a little chilly on slightly cooler nights.

My first experience with the GI Poncho Liner was in Vietnam. After discharge, I started a collection of the PL. One issue is they are kind of short for a tall guy, BUT my wife fell in love with them. We still use them as a top layer on our bed. OD green and black are better colors for most uses but we still use camo as well. I picked up a GI Artic poncho and liner in a tan color that are great because they are larger for Artic clothing but are much better for my size. Your product here is the legacy of the liner. Thanks for the review.

I actually don't have something like this. I've a x-large wool blanket I've used for years I'm quite happy with. Sheds light rain, quite warm and of a good size (66 inch x 90 inch). Yes, it's probably heavier and needs a bit of maintenance, but it's been good to me.

  • @billybattyboyjunior69

I ended up going with the jungle bag. Still works great as a blanket and has the added advantage of being a sleeping bag too. The price difference isn't huge so if you're on a budget I personally would go with the bag. Everything true about the blanket is true about the bag. I've never taken it down below 50 as I prefer warmer Carinthia mummy bags but I doubt it's performance is much better than the blanket so keep that in mind. It also comes with a mosquito net but I've found it annoying to use during sleep but in certain cases I'm sure the bugs can be more annoying.

The Jungle Blanket has been my go-to for 3-season use for almost a decade. It's the closest thing to a woobie I've seen since leaving the military. I added snaps to mine to make a footbox on one end for use in my hammock (works on the ground too). I agree with Luke about durability. Mine is almost a decade old, and still looks new. I wash it maybe once or twice a year, and have never had issues with smells or anything (just do it to make my wife happy). I bought an ultralight synthetic quilt from Enlightened Equipment this past year and that has replace the JB ... but ... I gave my old JB to my son, who is in Army ROTC in college, and he loves it. I have so many friends and acquaintances who have seen mine, liked it, and bought one for themselves. Over the past 10 years, I've probably seen 2 dozen or more folks do that. Luke is 100% right about this blanket. It's awesome. Great for starting out and experienced bushcrafters, campers, and hikers. Great product.

I have the smaller one and I agree, the larger one would have been better. That said, great piece of kit, definitely to be used in conjunction with other coverings in colder weather. Very durable, similar to military poncho liner. But the USMC zippered poncho liner that can be converted into a light sleeping bag is, so far, the best I’ve found. I have 3 of those. Thanks Luke, great review of a great product.

  • @dannyknight8082

I use the jungle bag and poncho liner, instead of the JB. Would agree with the temp ratings, I sleep fairly cold and at 10/11 degrees I wake up with the JB . I combine the two at camp after using the PL to sit around. Also now added a swagman roll as a double poncho and JB liner.. Maybe a little weird with all 3 but can take me into sub freezing temps and super versitile. Total is around 2.6kgs. Not that light but a good bushcraft setup.

I have one and love it. I use mine with my jungle bag. If I need more warmth I will shove my jungle blanket in my bag. I’m good in 30 degree weather. But I do wear thermals and wool soaks and I sleep like a baby.

Cool product. Would make a good pickup truck bench seat cover too...I use a fleece one on my Ford Ranger and it keeps you warm, less wear on the seats. If you set down Indian style and had an emergency candle, with that wrapped around you, it could prevent a person from freezing to death. It would be great in the fall for taking to football games when it's cool outside.

I have 3 of the XL version. I absolutely love mine I no longer use a quilt on my bedding have aii the bedroom windows open all year round and sleep in just boxers. I've never been cold. I am a hot sleeper so can probably get away with it the way I do. I would recommend them without hesitation. BTW I live in the UK, it doesn't get massively cold here but it gets cold enough

That's an awesome blanket. I'm approximately 6.4 in height. Thank you for sharing the information $40 looks like a reasonable price. Snugpak like the name, I will google it, see what's else they offer, and I'll be sure they know who gave me the scoop on snugpak

I bought one a few years back. I use it every night to sleep with. Perfect for summer camping. Lightweight for backpacking. Enough to keep you warm on any chilly or rainy summer camp days. Love it. Go buy one. It's money well spent.

This is a great idea! (I"d love it if you can remember the company for the girls. I'm the leader of a girls group) We take kids camping over the course of the year so it might be good to have something like this for ideas/etc. (And we're in Texas so most of our temps are warmer)

I got a similar blanket but from the company Arcturus. It seem a bit cheaper on amazon than the Snugpak and you got 90'' x 90''. I think the quality of the fabric is roughly the same from both of the blankets. I love mine! Always in my car, use it anytime we go camping, at the beach, picnic, etc. Worth every canadian pesos I paid.

I've slept in hammok in the middle of forest at winter. The temperature was about -1 -2 C. As a sleeping bag, used Swagman Roll. I've survived night, however it was pretty cold 😅 Definitely going to get this blanket as an addon go Swagman Roll.

I just did an experiment with the XL Jungle blanket. I camped out under a USGI poncho set up as an A frame tarp. I am 6'1" and 260 pounds so I have a fair amount of natural insulation. I probably sleep more comfortably in cool temps than the average person. The temp got down in 37 degrees in North Florida where the humidity is always high. I wanted to see how well the Jungle Blanket would compare to the USGI poncho liner. I slept in my clothes, which consisted of blue jeans, cotton T shirt, lightweight fleece and light wool socks that I had worn all day. I slept on an insulated Big Agnes air mattress. When it got down to 40 degrees, my feet started to feel a little chilly and I had an occasional shiver. I pulled out my poncho liner and added it over the Jungle Blanket and was completely comfortable. My conclusion is that for me both the Jungle Blanket and the poncho liner are good to about 40 degrees if I have a tarp, air mattress and am wearing clothes. A light wool blanket does the same but is much, much bulkier and heavier. I agree with your opinion of the Jungle Blanket. I have gotten really good use out of it indoors and out. I highly recommend it.

Blankets like these, and poncho liners(woobies), paired with a good bivi sack can be used down to just above freezing. For myself anyway, I may have to pair it with a warming layer of some variety, nothing too heavy to be comfortable, but that’s something you are already taking if your low temps are right around 33-40ish. Thats my standard sleeping system when hiking and doing patrol ops and stuff

I love my Jungle Blanket. For cost, weight, and versatility, I don’t think there are many outdoor products that can compete. I bought a Jungle Blanket back in 2020 for around $38 on Amazon, and it has come with me on many backpacking trips. I sleep very warm, and have used it comfortably (with a good sleeping pad) down into the mid 40s. I love it, but I think Luke is spot on. For most folks, this will be good down into the 50s, but not lower.
