Old retired cop here with a lot (a lot!) of bullets downrange with both revolvers and semi autos, and my go-to gun for concealed carry when I feel the need is the S&W 442 with Speer Gold Dot +P, just like in this video. Statistically 5-shots is more than enough for 99-percent of anticipated civilian encounters, so I don't feel that I'm outgunned or under-gunned.

What made you get the 442 over the 642? I've seen both at gun stores, but the 642 tends to be more popular and a little more expensive even though they're the same revolver with different finishes.

@@JacksonWalter735 The 442 was there at the LAPD gun store when I walked in and the 642 was not. Maybe if I had the choice I would have paid a little more for the 642, but after everything is said and done I would be happy with either version. As a Police Firearms Instructor I would no recommend either gun for the "average" shooter and especially people who don't like (or can't handle) recoil, the 442/642 is small and light and there is negative payback when shooting +P ammo. This said I still like the pistol for it's smallish size and especially that it can handle +P loads, but it is definitely NOT a casual plinker on the range.

@@FredericoChilibreath I appreciate the your thorough comment and advice. Currently deciding between the S&W 642, 442, and Ruger LCR for my father-in-law. He can't consistently rack the slide on his Glock 43 anymore (even when using the sights) after his stroke. I can't even begin to imagine what would happen if his gun jammed and he needed to clear it. Your comment helped me tremendously.

The average time for a self defense gunfight is 3 seconds. So whether you carry 5 rounds or 10 doesn't really matter. The one who gets the first shot on target is the one who wins the gunfight in the vast majority of cases.

Good video Sootch. My EDC is a revolver, love it. It's interesting how many similarities there are between shooting and Karate, muscle memory, aligning the bones for impact, creating calm, etc. A lot of people just don't realize that it's an art that must be learned. Keep up the good work Bro.

I have been carrying these revolvers since 1973 as both an off duty gun and now (retired) as a licensed citizen. LOVE THEM. I have tried all the others, I own several polymer 9mms, etc. I always go back to the J frame concealed hammer revolver. I have used the Model 40, Model 640 and now, the Model 642. With practice (use wadcutter loads for practice, and even dry firing) you can "stage" the S&W trigger to rotate the cylinder and cock the (internal) hammer, then the final squeeze fires the gun. Muscle memory. As you say, S&W has been making these since 1880 with the "Lemon Squeezer". I have a 1930s era S&W .38 "Safety Hammerless", more as a collectors item than anything, but I love the top break design, though it lacks strength for the modern ammo everyone wants. It is fine for the old .38 S&W cartridge (not .38 Special) For carry in the Model 40, 640 or 642, I use Buffalo Bore 158gr. +P soft lead SWC-HP. It is NOT pleasant to shoot, but generates right at 1000 fps in the 1-7/8" barrel (chronographed, 984 avg.), 300+ foot pounds of energy and perfect expansion every time. My usual carry holster is a DeSantis mini-scabbard OWB holster. I will also just drop it in a pocket sometimes.

I always end up going back to my snub nose revolvers for edc. They seem to conceal better on my person than an auto loader, even of similar size too. Either way, you also don't have to worry about a backup magazine since magazines are another point of failure. You also won't have failures due to a high off-hand grip, or a loose strong-hand grip, like an auto. The internet commandos will always say "this is why you train", but training is not going to prepare you for that real-life self defense situation. Almost no one will have the "perfect grip" in a reactionary self defense situation.

@@rubensnyman1728 lol ok on a serious note: If you shoot an auto loading hand gun frequently, and train for speed and reactive self defense, you’ll notice quirks with grip, the slide, and magazines and failures that you’ll never deal with when using a revolver. The issue with the magazine is that some failures happen within a magazine, or some failures to feed or extract may not clear by simply racking the slide. This is a serious fact that isn’t covered often on KZread. When this happens, the only way to clear the malfunction is by dropping the magazine and clearing through the well. It’s advisable to have a spare magazine on your person since it will be more manageable than picking up the original magazine or holding it and replacing it. Other issues with grip affect the slide and may introduce other malfunctions when you’re reactionary that may not affect you when you’re shooting at the range. You have to consider that in self defense you’re often not standing at low ready or some tacticool stance to begin with. You can almost never hold a revolver incorrectly so much that it fails so long as you pull the trigger. Injury is a different factor obviously, but I’ve gotten close to the forcing cone many times with a .38 when doing reactionary drills and never suffered injury. Reactionary shooting is always disadvantageous compared to the assailant so these extra variables that don’t often become an issue when you’re at the range may become issues in real life. If you train right, you’ll notice them happening and you’ll figure out ways to mitigate based on your gear. For me, using a snub nosed revolver addresses all the above issues with less work.

@@pgman5416 Very well put. I wasn't exactly around to see the era where everyone used wheel guns over auto loaders, but after doing my own research I have come to see the value in them, especially for concealed carry. One of the issues that has been drawing me towards a revolver and away from a semi auto is the issue of limp-wristing, which may be likely to occur in certain scenarios such as if your arm is injured or you have to shoot in an awkward position. Philosophically, when you carry a gun you prepare for the worst. To people who prefer auto loaders, preparing for the worst means an increased magazine capacity. For revolver users on the other hand, it means being able to rely on the notion that their gun will go bang on their mark and continue to do so regardless of any imperfections in their grip. Overall, I believe that both semi auto fans and revolver enjoyers are driven by a similar philosophy, it is merely that their approach to it that differs.

I;ve been carrying a 642 which is the stainless version of the 442. The stock rubber grip that comes with it is very small and in my medium hands made shooting not fun at the range. I replaced the grip with a Pachmayr Presentation Compaq and the difference was day & night. No more thumb bite from the cylinder release. No more bruising between the thumb & forefinger. I went from shooting 10 rounds to now 100. Combined with the new grip and a Bianchi Lightnin' 55 holster and I have a great EDC combo!

I carry a snub nose model 60 and practice with it often and do most of my shots in double action and weak handed! I usually like doing trigger work to some of my firearms but in this one I only polished the rebounding slide and where it runs inside of the frame, by doing that it doesn't lessen the trigger weight but it does make it smoother and easier to pull!

Use low recoil loads for bulk practice, and run a few cylinder loads of defensive ammo to know where your hitting. HPR is good ammo. Thanks for a good video. One other thing you can get grips to fit any hand for most revolvers.

I’m someone who prays I never have to fire in self defense, ever. And were I to find myself in a desperate situation I would only fire my weapon as a last resort. As in, I will probably die or be severely injured unless I act with deadly force. My firearm would, hopefully, serve mainly as a deterrent. I would rather not have to take a life with all the moral and legal implications. However, I value my own life enough to be prepared if the unthinkable happens. I think a 5-6 shot revolver is sufficient. SHTF? Well, that’s more hi-cap territory.

Note on the grip... while one-handed it is better to have the bore aligned with your forearm for structural support, when shooting two-handed, it only applies when using the limited weaver-style hold. A well-tuned isosceles hold will ensure the recoil is consistent, and the front sight tracking repeatable for the fastest possible follow-up shots.

@wcropp1 Gold Dot that are specifically made for a gun with a short barrel are a major asset for anyone carrying a small .38/.380. In the past, people have recommended carrying wadcutters in a revolver as they do more damage than round nose bullets, but they are not ideal for self defense. Hollow points are better, assuming they expand, and they're getting to the point of acceptable reliability (at least certain brands are) in these calibers. I would recommend +P rounds as well, if possible.

fabulous video. I conceal carry the 642 and practice once a month. The recoil is hard on my old hand. I shoot at close range for accuracy. It does take a lot of practice.

I have a charter arms, bulldog, snub noise,6 shot, , older model, made in 1983 , with rubber grips, , easy to use, basically can hit fly with it, had used them, to defend and protect myself, in gunfights.

I have really been contemplating getting a Taurus PT 905 for a smaller Concealer. Its a 9mm revolver, which I like so I keep ammo likeness.

I gotta say, I though I had made up my mind on not getting a revolver for actual carry, but after that shirt demonstration I think I'm going to rethink that. A gun that can't be stopped by a simple grab is a very attractive concept.

I love S&W snubbys. I leaned to shoot with my dads 649 & 686. He started out on .38 special! I couldn’t wait for .357 magnum. No .22lrs for me growing up. Hahahaha.

I have a Ruger SP101 in 357 that I use in this role. In EDC I still seem to carry my Ruger LCP with crimson trace and a Glock 27 in Crossbreed IWB holster.

Sootch, living in MA we seem to have a lot of stupid rules when it comes to firearms. I love my little 442 so much, I even had my local gunsmith hone the hammer off my Ruger sp101 357 When it comes to legalities, double action is the way to go. keep up the vidios.

I was fortunate enough to find a excellent condition Smith 342 ti airlite centennial 11oz !! .38spec +p in excellent condition. I installed full size hogue monogrips.. which cover the back strap Cushing my hand against recoil and get all my fingers on the grip.. This is my pocket carry revolver I carry it in my right front jeans pocket in a DeSantis Superfly holster with velcro on flap to prevent printing.. I carry it loaded with Federal HST.38 +p 130 gr hollows .. these recoil very light even in my 11 oz centennial
