SNS 307: Grandfather Clock Restoration, Shear Tool on Aluminum
This week I help a viewer with some machining on parts out of a Grandfather clock that was built by his Grandfather. The two aluminum plates he wanted to machine flat after the clock was subjected to a garage fire. He wasn't happy with the results of just sanding them down, he wanted a machined look on them so we stick them in the good ole G&E and get them looking better then new!
Big thanks to all of the people over @igchipoftheweek on Instagram, and all of the followers there for voting me chip of the Month in March! / igchipoftheweek

I love that Adam's helping a guy with his grandpa's clock. Everyone of us who had amazing grandpas wants to preserve every bit of memory we might have of them
Must be a strong contender for Chip of the Year, Straw Category.
It's always a good day when Abom79 uploads a video!
One thing I sure do appreciate about your videos, mister Adam, is the fact that the only music we hear is the one from the machines... Your editing job is second to none, as well!... Keep it up! Thanks for sharing!
Granddad would be proud of you fixing his old clock, with years of enjoyment passed done to the guy who owns the clock for him to pass down. Good job as always adom and Congratulations on the swag.
I love that picture of you, your Dad, and your Grand Dad. Family is a wonderful thing! mike

True, there's love there.
It was great to see the final product, before and after. He definitely made the right choice sending them to you Adam. You're a good man and a great machinist and toolmaker. I really admire your work.
As someone who does metal work in their kitchen, on a Black and Decker Workmate, using an Amazon cheapo vice, with vice grips I made out of angle iron and magnets ... it makes my day to see that there is a 5 tonne machine that mechanically shaves a fraction, of a fraction of a millimetre, off the surface of a metal plate. This has made my evening. I hope that grandfather clock goes on to tell the time for many years.
First machine tool I worked on when an apprentice. A year and a half on the bench, then only then was I put on a machine tool..8 months on the shape, them moved onto other machines. Served my apprenticeship at BULOVA WATCH Co. In Astoria Queens, NY.. Early 70's it was 4 1/2 years program.

My 1st job out of the Army, in 1968, was as a lab. tech. in Bulova's Dial Dept. Tool and die makers worked in the Dial Dept. and I got to use their drill press on high purity silver electroplating anodes. Darned tootin' that swarf got recycled. :>D. Bulova laid me and a lot of other people off in 1970. Contracts for the military had ended.
Another great video from Adam and the icing on the cake was images of Nathan rebuilding his Grandfathers clock.
Yes, I ruined the finish, but that's not what you see. I made blunder and in the process of trying to do the edges, I put quite a few scratches in it. I decided to take everything and polish it up with a buffing wheel and compound. I also did all of the parts, especially the copper ratchet and the pawls (I was surprised to see that they were actually copper and not steel) and the large brass drive gear on the driving shaft. My brother in-law was actually kind enough to take the cut pieces of Lexan and make new cover plates as well as a new face. What shows in the pictures does not do justice to the awesome job that he did, especially on the face. Unfortunately, I had a couple of better pictures for the copper and brass that were better exposed to show how nice they looked, but I guess I didn't get them to Adam in time. Although he doesn't show it in the assembled pics I left the outside surface on the back plate untouched. A big thank you to Adam for a great job on the plates!

@@jthomas1878 Thanks for that. To be fair, I knew better. What's done is done and I like the polished finish anyway. Had I been able to get it down to clean metal, I might have done that. There was a fair bit of staining on many of the other pieces so that's why I wanted to clean as much as I could with the buffing wheel and compound. That went with the new clock face that my brother in-law made for me that was so clean and clear I just had to clean everything else as much as possible. The only thing I couldn't do much about was the shaft that had the large brass gear on it. There's a disk on that which is steel and I could only do so much to clean that up. That's fine because that little bit of age showing adds character.

Very cool, I'm clad you were able to save it.
I had no idea what a shaper was until a few weeks ago when I found this channel. Now I can't get enough. I love seeing julianned aluminum.
Adam, thanks for your presentation, as always, detailed, good look at the work in progress. Mostly, I am so thankful your health has improved, your shop is incredible, expanding each month. The best thing is seeing you get a new lease on life, it is nice to see someone entirely change their life, and succeed. Thanks Abby for that as well.......
No more Abom, it is Mr Craftsman. You have learned so much and get so much from that shaper..Love watching.
Every time I watch this channel, I learn something. I love the different chip formations. Great job!
Good on both of you for putting the work into this; it's a real connection with your history.
"Linear Milling" is in a league all its own. Nothing can duplicate the finish. The honing of the tool is also key. Those are beautiful, Adam. The clockworks will live again!
That tap magic is amazing. It leaves a gorgeous finish on your projects.
Great video. That was just the kind of job that the shaper was made for. Unbelievable finish.
Chip of the month next stop chip of the year!! Congrats!
I am utterly amazed that such a smooth surface can be created by this arm that goes back and forth and to the side. Speaks well of the engineers that designed it and the man who uses it.
I like that idea "enjoying a nice day in the shop". I think I'll do that today. Got some tidying up to do and always a couple of little random projects come up. Great content.
Aaaaaand the winner of Chip of the Month is .... Abom79!!!
Gday Adam, I agree fully, you cannot beat the finish of a shaper, straight lines are much nicer then a swirls, I’ve only played a little with aluminium on my shaper but I have achieved brilliant finish’s with what I have done, even on normal mild steel I have got fantastic finish’s, fine tune the shear tool and the machine does the rest, thank you for sharing mate, I always enjoy shaper footage and always learn along the way, Cheers Matty
your intro is about as marshal tucker band fire on the moutain as it gets. my dad raised me on it. I love that kick in as soon as your video starts. Your videos are awesome with editing detail. Sir, don't change a thing!!!
The shaper make one awesome finish! Great work!
You get chip of the month and then you go and make chips like I've never seen man, so worthy! What I cant't work out is how they went from those thin 'pick up stick' rolled chips to those pencil sharpener shaving ones, I liked the thin ones myself, you could make something very cool out of those ones :) It looks like a great old clock and it must mean so much more when it's built by you grandad
Thanks for sharing I love watching them old machines work
You know you're good when you get the shavings to roll and stack like wheat stalks on a farmers flat trailer. :)

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Agree with Florida - moved here in Pensacola in 1994 and no plans on leaving.
Gotta love these shapers. Incredible machines!
Those are the coolest shavings off that shaper so far i think - really cool looking finish too. Every time you use that machine it becomes more and more clear why you like it so much
Looks like another chip of the week win with those straight long chips
Love the shaper :) Thanks for taking us along
Just bought a G&E shaper and looking forward to doing projects like this, not as good as Abomb, but just as satisfying. Nice content!
Nice job Abom79... Awesome to see the clock rebuild pics...
Should be a contender for chip of the year! This job really showcases the sheer accuracy of that shaper, so satisfying to watch - beautiful job there, Adam!
i love the rhythmic sound of the shaper making cuts! Like listening to a waterfall. That finish is awesome! Thank you Abom79!
A shaper with chip stacker funktion. Nice. 😁
Chip of the year right here.
I'm not sure if you've done it already or not, but I'd love to see a video on how you operate the shaper. What handles do what, and a quick run through of how it operates, such as how the ram stroke is adjusted for length of cut and so forth. Machining is something I enjoy learning about, and the shaper is a very satisfying machine to watch in action.
Wow ... nothing like a grandfather clock actually made by your grandfather!
I think that I'll add another comment here and that's that the clock was/is NOT a grandfather clock per se. When someone says grandfather clock I think of a clock that the clock works are inside a nicely made cabinet. Also, this has only the clock mechanism without chimes. Personally, I love it open like this as it has a nice "techno" look to it. Right now the whole clock weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of about 30 lbs. I was planning to do a stand out of steel, but can't find anyone within a reasonable distance that is willing to do it. So what I'm planning is a stand made of oak boards. Just very fundamental but strong. I have no idea yet as to how much weight I'll need to drive the clock and that will be added on to the roughly 30 lbs. of the clock. I'll put in another thanks to Adam here for an awesome job, and to all the wonderful comments.
Great work Adam. That shaper leaves a great Finnish. Thank you for sharing.
Great to see some photos of it going back together as well. I understand why we don’t often get that but is great when we do. :)
You got a shout out by Alec Steele in his Video MAKING A MOUNTAIN BIKE!!! Part 2. Great to see people like him watching you too!!
That shaper finish is unreal.
Magnificent rescue!
Hey Adam, now there's a chip I've never seen before. Looks like a beautiful finish.
Those are some competitive chips right there at 17:01!
Nice work! Tell your friend that he'll have to re-bush all the bushings as they'll no longer be upright. Some may even need re-depthing.
The shaper is just hipnotic...
It's awesome that you help the community.
No matter how hard i’d try with a cnc mill.. i’d never get it as clean as this. Awesome work man! Love stopping by ever now and then to see what you’ve been up to 👌🏻😎
19:39 Looks like you're going to win the chip of the month again :D
Adam I am blown away by the perfect way the clock sides look, I like to see a great job!!
Very interesting chips.
Clock looks amazing now. Great video! Thanks for sharing
Wow. That G&E Shaper is an incredible tool.
If you've kept the Shavings you should send them to the youtuber Peter Brown, he makes resin items out of stuff like that and it'd be an amazing collab
Beautiful machining Adam, and what a spectacular clock. It's cool his grandfather made it.
I'm a fairly new subscriber, so it's the first time I've seen you cut aluminum on the shaper. It's always cool to see how different materials behave. Nice relaxing video.
This is so satisfying to watch
Mesmerizing to watch. I have a South Bend 7" shaper, not used for years, should get it going.....
Also - wont lie this video kinda got my hopes up that maybe Adam will take up an interest in clocks and that gets us one step closer to a pretty awesome Abom/Clickspring collaboration!
Wow. Aluminum is easy to clean up and polish by hand. Very easy. I had a part made of stainless and I wanted it to be a mirror shine. I regret not going with aluminum, because I absolutely could never get it to polish up to look like chrome, even after paying a shop to do it. I had done a similar part for an older project with ease, progressing in finer wet sandpaper up to 2,000 grit.

Granted sanding doesn't get it flat
A home made grandfather clock, this is one of those project where you go all the way or don't start at all, nice to see how the shaper becomes part of this.
Oh now your just showing off with the chips lol looking good
Really nice seeing the finished project and how your work fits in to it.
You love your shaper. And so do we!
Good professional job and video of quality. Very tank.
Whenever you do shaper work on aluminum, the chips always look like icicles to me...so cool.
Great video as always. Did really nice finish on the aluminum.
Amazing! The surface finish you can get off that shaper is outstanding, very impressive.
Congrats on winning chip of the month Adam!
Those curb feeler shavings are cool.
Great video and thanks for sharing! Stay Safe Guys!
Great to see the finished product.
Super nice curly whirlies
Stacking those chips is so sexy. As my teacher said back in school. If you know how to handle a shaper you can throw the surface grinder in the bin. You can really get some amazing finish on your work piece with the shaper.
Always love the shaper footage!!!!
Hi Adam, way that aluminium looks finished is pushing me to start searching for the shaper! Well done Cheers
It was quite aesthetically pleasing the way the swarf neatly stacked itself on the corner, like sheaves of wheat...
That’s a really neat looking clock put together. Thank you for sharing those pictures he sent you of it’s completion.
"When your standing at a distance like this, you can even feel em"? Smiles, too funny.
That is so cool! Thank you Adam.
Congrats on the win, Adam!
That shaper looks like it did a great job
Thank you Adam I always enjoy watching your videos I am from South Africa
There is something so satisfying watching this behemoth machine ,do almost surgical work . Thanks brother .

Shaper is pretty satisfying too!
SWEEEET..I just love to see that shaper do the same thing OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER...SWEEEEEET😎..ROCKMAN!
I love that Shaper. Beautiful work. Do they wring together? LOL
I love to see those machines working.
I'm wondering if there is some leveling issue on the vice. Those two pieces machined very similarly, not sure it's a coincidence. I know it wasn't critical on these parts but it's probably worth checking.

Man’s prolly got enough experience.. But yeah i as someone who has worked a couple of years as a conventional and cnc miller thought the exact same when the 2nd plate turned out to be somewhat similar
so this is how abom makes his Aluminum foil xD
Great job and editing my friend.
Hey Adam you do a beautiful job. And you got the best toys to play with anybody I know…
woah... this surface finish is more beautifull than what you could achieve with the manual mill, im very impressed by that surface finish quality.. i got to ask you to please help vintage maschinery with his planer, getting his tools, knowledge and parameters to a point where he can achieve similar great results
Damn I love that machine. It’s hypnotic and relaxing watching it work. 👍👍
I won chump of the month once.... didn't make a video about it though. Congrats, Adam!
