Snowy Skoolie Life In The Ozarks of Missouri (AND Condensation In A School Bus Conversion Is REAL)

We're settling into snowy skoolie life in The Ozarks real nice. Except we have one problem... CONDENSATION! Up to this point we have done everything we can to prevent condensation. From awesome sheep wool insulation, to using lots of wood to absorb moisture.
BUT that being said, our bus conversion isn't quite finished. Cold drafts can lead to condensation, and our dash area isn't finished. Single pane windows result in condensation. A whole array of other things lead to condensation when you are living in a metal structure, and you breath & fart. Along with cook, shower, and do laundry. Moisture is inevitable, and we can't expect the wool insulation to do everything. We still have some work to do to stop drafts.
We're not too butt hurt about it, because we expected it, but we do want to always share with you the truth. Skoolie life isn't always rainbows and epic sunsets.
OoO we do have something fun to share. One of our follower & friends Matt Courty sent us mail. You gotta see what this guy made for us. It's awesome!

    Late to the comments here on this, but 3M window kits really help with condensation issues. We are still in a house and we have old single pane windows, and in the winter if we don't put it on our windows it's a constant drip of water all winter long. Also helps keeps your heat in! Side note, we just inherited a bus from my uncle, he had been living in it for a few years and cannibalized an old RV for the walls and such. Gonna gut it and start over. Been binge watching your channel all day.

    Great tip about the 3M window kit! We will look into that. People have told us to seran wrap them... All kinds of stuff. Glad to hear there is a kit, and it works for you. Congrats on the bus! Hope you have fun gutting it, and making it your own! Keep us posted and let us know if you have questions. We really appreciate you digging into our videos. If you can't find what you are looking for just ask. Our bus isn't quite done yet... So there may not be a video just yet. Anyways, thanks for being here! :) - Erin + Brian too

    You could always build a lean-to over your skoolie for next year and following than you wouldn't have the snow and ice build up thats what a lot of people do even with trailer houses. It helps .

    That's definitely a good option @Steve Haile. We only had about 3 big snows in Missouri so far. So I don't think winter is gonna be a big deal here. Not like the winters we were experiencing in Canada. So I dunno if it's worth it to build a lean to yet. Just so many darn project ideas, and not even $ or time. One day! lol

    Love the wood work gift! I'm chasing mystery leaks in my skoolie and of course it never leaks if I sit down and watch the seams around the door and one window. It only happens when I'm not watching it. Murphy's law in motion.

    Aww @heather holeman - Strange how that works isn't it?! We were worried we had leaks again, until we realized it was condensation. Hope you find those pesky leaks! AND that they aren't too bad.

    I was just thinking, you know with how smart you two are. I would see about making a snow to water catcher, to filter, to refill your water tank.. I know it's not much but every drop counts.. An addon to the chimney for heat to melt the snow to a water catcher?

  • @BEAdventurePartners

    @BEAdventurePartners

    2 жыл бұрын

    You know @To Connect 2000s - that's a great idea. Also, it's WAY more water from snow melt that you could imagine. You can get a ton of water from melt off of a roof. Soon enough we will have the greenhouse built, and the little roof off of the north side will have water catchment set up. That should catch the snow melt for us. If we need that water we will pump it into our tank, and filter it of course.

    Hey Brian does the generator have an electric starter on it? And it might be time to build a carport over the bus just an idea I spray foamed my coach but you still get condensation on the windows but the rest of the bus is fine so far well I hope you get it figured out. You will we have confidence in you two. And oh yeah hard cider I'll be by brother. Lol

    Hey @Brian Davis - No our generators don't have electric starters. That sure would be nice though. Maybe at some point we will build a car port, but so far the winter hasn't been too bad. Maybe 3 storms.... Nothing like the Canadian winter. ;) Glad to hear you have had luck with spray foam. It's inevitable that the single pain windows with sweat though. Thanks for hanging out with us. Look forward to sippin' on home-brewed cider with ya.

    A lot of your condensation problems are because the windows are single pane growing up I northern Minnesota the windows on the bus were always frosted or iced up in old houses with single pane windows ,people use plastic to make a vapor barrier .I always wondered why no one figured out storm windows using plexiglass with magnets possible to be replaced in summer with insect screens held on with magnets

  • @BEAdventurePartners

    @BEAdventurePartners

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's for sure @Karen Riggle. The single pain windows cause a lot of issues. So do the drafts. It seems like winter is pretty much done now, but I think the window plexi on magnets is a great idea. Maybe next winter we will tackle that! Thanks for sharing.

    Great question @Blake Dewhirst! As a kid (Brian), planes seemed to just fly without leaving the white cloud behind them. As an adult, nearly all planes have a white trail. Some call it exhaust... Some call it condensation... I've seen somewhere that planes let out a white fine powder to shade the sun... What is it really? Not sure exactly. Does the sky turn a pale white color after they criss cross flying patterns? Yep! It sure does! So many questions during this time in history, don't you think? You might want to try a little different approach to the mold I would use hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach because of the smell first off followed by a product that is called microban it is a antifungal spray that is used by carpet cleaning companies to prevent mold read up on them

  • @BEAdventurePartners

    @BEAdventurePartners

    2 жыл бұрын

    Now that’s a hot tip @Scott Sutton! We hadn’t thought to use hydrogen peroxide and haven’t heard of microban. We’ll look it up! What’s crazy is all the info we found on mold says to use bleach. However you are the second person that has shown light on different products to use. Will have a follow up video in the near future with some experiments of the various products we’ve been referred to. Because we have a couple spots on a couple different windowsills. Another thing we’re thinking about doing is pulling the windowsills up and refinishing them by doing mold remediation first followed by sanding them followed by epoxy this time. Thanks for watching! We appreciate your feedback! - Brian + Erin

    @@BEAdventurePartners I ran my own carpet cleaning business and mold was always an issue after cleaning because the carpet would remain wet you have to remember mold needs food to grow and I had somebody asked me to bleach some chairs and I refuse to do it as a service but I recommended peroxide because it would not remove the color and it's a lot safer for you to breathe my father got chemical pneumonia from doing a shower with bleach and finally discovered hydrogen peroxide it's a lot safer so have at it love your guys shows by the way I was the flying tomato bus that asked you how you two met and were you married because I was confused on your live broadcast months ago absolutely love the story with that too

    Are you using a propane heater for main heat? or it your wood stove? If you use propane it will condensate your bus.

  • @BEAdventurePartners

    @BEAdventurePartners

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Charles Johnson - No we have a diesel heater and our woodstove. No propane. There's still a lot of variables as to why the condensation. Drafts, single pain windows, yada yada yada.... It's great when we aren't going through a big thaw.
