The point is that with engageable diff lock you need to keep it in low so different (higher) low speeds are useful. That doesn’t apply to trucks with always on difflock. Also trucks with difflock always on like the Tayga don’t benefit much from the different stages of low and need the speed more, because they are great off-road already

I like Low + in the off-road gearbox. If I'm off-road and the truck is having a tough time choosing a gear when in Auto, I'll drop it into Low + to eliminate the constant shifting and smooth out the application of power to the ground. If it's a particularly nasty stretch I'll drop it into Low to reduce wheelspin, but Low + works most of the time. I've found Low - good for going down the steeper slopes in the game. Low - gives you more control than using gravity and the brakes.

Usually I love your comparison videos but I think this one missed the point. I find the high range best. You can “power shift” to 2nd or 3rd then jam it into high gear. That locks the truck into a much faster gear so it won’t downshift automatically. Using the Tayga 6436 or Voron AE upgraded with high range is epic!

  • @Boukevx

    @Boukevx

    Жыл бұрын

Yes, true. This is not how I use high range gearboxes at all. When ou start you get a minimum amount of momentum, crank it into H to get max speed and skip to gear 4 or 5 instantly, than switch back to A on good surfaces or plow through bad surfaces in H. Some trucks only slow down on the worst of areas which need to be winched anyway with all gearsets. All other areas have 4/5 gearspeed with usage of high range. So high range is so much better, the only thing you have to really watch out for is durability and very heavy and long loads since you should avoid getting stuck or slow down on hills.

In this case the ANK also drives a lot better because it doesn't flip over as often. Also suggestion for the next truck comparison: Freightliner M916A1 vs. Navistar.

I haven't really felt a need for the high range yet. I can control my speed fairly well with the off-road, and the Low- is quite handy for the more-often-than-wanted times I get really bogged down. Though I do mainly use the off-road because Low+ is essentially 1st gear with the added benefit of being able to utilize your Diff-Lock (if it's not always on).

I've mostly used the snow runner and off-road gearbox, I've been using the high range on a lot more trucks though. On a stadium map I downloaded, I've even been able to use some vanilla vehicles to clear some jumps and sometimes even finish the course with the high range gearbox. Shifting from automatic, to high and back to auto can really get a lot of the trucks moving pretty quick

try "high" on highrange. it give some sort of magic torque boost and can run up to 30km/h. Best tactic is to use auto to start rolling, switch to H and once top speed for H is reached back to A. If you pull - stay on H and you will out-pull offroad - at least on tarmac

I find that Low+ is a sweet spot gear on most trucks. Some trucks are useless with out the low ranges, like the 3194. If the truck has S or S+ power rating then it can usually use the highway gears to great effect. Highway gears also help in using less fuel, which especially helpful on thirsty trucks with small tanks (ANK with V12 NEEDS the highway gears)

For trucks with permanent or no diff lock I use the highrange gearbox, no questions asked. For trucks with switchable diff lock it becomes a bit more interesting. There are some trucks that have engines so weak that highrange makes no sense, so offroad it is, but others are strong enough to make full use of the eight gears, and those get the highrange gearbox unless I see myself crawling in low gear a lot on a given map.

I use offroad for vehicles with both switchable AWD and diff lock. I use balanced for the rest because for some reason it saves more fuel plus can reach all 5 gear with a load better than the highway. I use highway for fun only plus not only you can go fast but for some reason when loaded the truck might not shift beyond 4th gear and on top of all things it consumes more fuel than the other two while driving and not on idle.

ANK MK38 is a diff-lock always on vehicle, for diff-lock switchable vehicles, the story gonna be a bit different. Because L+ on offroad is faster than L on highrange, diff-lock switchable vehicle can only activate diff-lock in L, L- or L+ gear, that means offroad can go faster with diff-lock on , very useful in offroad conditions. In my opinion, highrange is suitable for diff-lock always on vehicles, can make big difference in contest missions. About ANK MK38, just found even in stock condition, it can finish "Container delivery" contest in Russia in about 3:50~ 4:10. Maybe some can make it even faster.

The high gear in the high range trans is perfect for cruising and maintaining good speed while towing. It's rather unfair to ignore highrange's real advantage, which is it's very fast H gear. Most driving through off-tarmac conditions, with any gearbox, will be done in H gear. The higher gears in auto are usually irrelevant for anything but for on the road. Except when pulling loads. If during the road test, the truck could get into H gear, it would have easily demolished the offroad gearbox. H will also blow through many obstacles on momentum alone, but will bog down in test conditions of long mud holes. Highrange is a significantly superior trail runner, extremely so on trucks with always on diff lock. It's speed easily makes up for any lost time bogging down. Basically, I'd like to see more use of H gear in your tests on anything. Leaving it all to automatic is often disingenuous to the real potential of a vehicle. Perhaps more 'real' tests too. Like your older videos on Mudrunner with the test up the hill and through the offroad track.

I'd keep the Balanced gearbox, especially on the ANK. (btw this truck is a monster, just don't use chained tires. I have better results with the 51" ANKO tires than the 51" UOD IIs) The problem with the highrange gearbox is that if you have more gears, you're gonna use them. And Snowrunner physics aren't nice on going fast. Especially with random suspension damage coming out of nowhere. Offroad is too slow and worsens fuel economy. For that, I'm better off upgrading the engine.

  • @toyelephantpounds

Good point because switchable diff can only be used in low range. So LR+ with diff on can make you much faster off road compared to 1st gear in auto or H with the diff turned off. There is more benefit to offroad gearbox on trucks with switchable diff.

@@specialopsdave I figured it out a while back, its actually the frame rate, the higher your frame rate the less smoke you get. So if you cap your FPS to 30 you get tons of smoke. That's why all the console videos have tons of smoke and the PC ones never do.

this is such a stupid question XD of course the offroad one is better for driving over soft terrain, you get more ways to get out of the mud, but guess what, you don't need that on roads, and thats where you use high range gearbox to transport heavy objects like a semi trailer full of concetrete or a offroad vehicle to get somewhere remote FASTER, but instead of going 20/h in the offroad vehicle you place it on a truck that can go faster on road and you use the one you need where you need it.. not sliding all over the place on your mud tires..

Highrange gearbox is vastly superior & here is why. The thing with Snowrunner is that the "driver" keeps shifting if u are in auto in the worst times making u lose all ur torque & momentum. The L1 tap is only a minor help. That's why I, use only the Highrange gearbox cuz after the 2 gear in auto you can switch to H this way is the fastest & safest way to deliver cargo. U are not to fast to crash but faster than with any other gear box constant ~25 - 28 Km/h even in harsh terrain. No more stupid up & down shifting all the time. You can get the Highrange gearbox right after the Alaska tutorial making the game much more enjoyable. After that i recommend get the Tayga 6436 & u are in business. It makes the game more fun but still challenging unlike all the broken OP mods. With the Tayga 6436 & highrange gearbox i recommend do the 2 Quest's to access Quarry (russia) then the Quest: "Clearing the way" in Quarry, to get access to ZIMNEGORSK, there get the big engine & more importantly the Taigas suspension & you have a very capable Truck. The best thing is that you can do all of that right after the tutorial. But keep in mind that ZIMNEGORSK is even in the Taiga 6436 with Highrange & only the Allterrain tires, a tough nut to crack & you need make cautious choices of the path ur using. Very helpful if u don't know it by now: www.maprunner.info I really hate that the Dev's didn't add at least a sequential gearbox in the gameplay options. I play on PC with PS4 controller.

From what i have heard its used for delivering a steady stream of mid range torque which is useful when going up a steep hill och pulling cargo, but in snow runners its also good for getting really good acceleration

It's possible that highrange seemed to be just as good as offroad because that particular truck is so capable that the low range grunt wasn't actually needed. Like it said the conclusion, if you are in the worst possible terrain you'll notice the difference with lowrange but besides that it will also be needed if your vehicle is not capable. Then in even semi-poor conditions highrange will struggle. I think terrain AND how competent your vehicle is will need to be considered.

From my experience they both increase fuel consumption drastically and offer no real benefits. Some trucks are even slower with highrange than with normal gearbox and the additional low gears on the off-road transmission are just throttle settings allowing you to use diff-lock with some more speed. Not worth the much higher fuel consumption. Putting a bigger engine in results in more performance with much less of a gain in fuel consumption.

If Diff Lock is switchable than definitely offroad because low gear not working like in real life. Actually "Low+" is the only low gear which working like it should. "Low" and "Low-" it is cut versions of "Low+" with less power. Sometimes "Low" and "Low-" not enough to spin the wheels, but when you switch to "Low+" wheels starts spinning. In real life it's gonna be opposite.

I usually find these vids very handy but for gearbox comparison your standard test setup isn't adequate imo. A gearbox is a mixture of torque, fuel use and speed and you'll get more mileage out of it by using it manually. The difference in speed & torque is most noticeable on those times your truck works itself deeper in the mud because the wheels spin too fast and those other times when you can't pull yourself up a slope with a heavy cargo. Those are the times you need respectively the slower wheel speeds and more torque at lower rpm's that the offroad box offers. Here we didn't even really use the Low + speed it offers. The slight fuel and large speed advantage the Highrange gearbox offers is obvious, but then again the truly high speed is rarely safe to use :D

I seriously still dont understand any videos of snow runner discussing fast, speed or high gear why lol this is about extreme difficult conditions not drag strips or highways and i realize there is finally actually a map with long highways but look how long that took to be part of this game? I truly thinks mods and finding fast trucks has no part in this game its about figuring out situations, being patient, learning to adjust vehicles and understanding the maps.
