Back in the 1970's when CB was at it's height of popularity this was a great time to have one because it seemed like **everybody** had them (or three). My brother and I got into CB in the mid 70's because several of our friends had them. We set up a base station using a simple Midland 23 channel Am-only rig with an Avanti Astroplane base antenna at 60' in the air. We didn't have an amp or anything and the miniscule 4-watts of RF power the radio put out was plenty of power because the antenna was so high. Antenna height is everything! I truly miss those days because it was so much fun and you could talk to other states or even other countries. This was way before the internet, before talking such great distances was commonplace as it is today via the web.

Late 70's UK I repaired a 1kw valve linear at school... You dont need too much height or a large antenna when you have power. Also it was before the UK legaised CB so huge antennas was a way to get caught. I ran a 9ft tank whip in the attic grounded to the water pipes.
Now that we just lost the Bandit Burt Reanolds ,the snowman Jerry Reed, and Sheriff Bouford T Justice Jackie Gleason. Now they can be together again in the Kingdom of Heaven RIP the Bandit, snowman, and Sheriff Bouford T Justice and thank you for giving us a movie to that we can always remember for those who were growing up in the 70's.
I saw Smokey and the Bandit at least 15 times at the theater when I was a kid.
In this era the CB was so popular the car companies offered CBs as factory options. You could get almost every GM with a factory installed CB radio and antenna. Even Cadillacs. All the way until 1985. My Grandfather had a 1985 Eldorado and the owners manual showed how to use the optional CB radio if equipped!
"East bound and down, Loaded up and truckin' We gonna do what they say can't be done.... We got a long way to go and a short time to get there, we're East bound just watch 'ol Bandit run" R.I.P. Jerry Reid, Burt Reynolds, and Jackie Gleason. THE Best Movie of all Time....Period! ✌😔
Saw an interview with burt saying he and hal both tried to scare the shit out of Sally but she hung on and loved it. What a absolute trooper she was.
I used to have a CB when I was a kid. My handle was the CanAm Rocker. My Dad is Canadian and Mom American and was rock music was my favorite. Funny name at the time.

My dad drove trucks here in Australia. We had a cb in the car and a base set in the house, the antenna for the base set sat on the hill beside the house on top of an old wind mill tower. I remember it had a long rod in the middle with about 8 droopys or long flexible rods hanging from the main rod in a circle. We could sometimes get guys in New Zealand and other closer islands, got a guy asking for a radio check, he was in Canada but after about 5 minutes faded out. My dad used to talk to the truckers when we were on holidays, our call sign for our car (a Subaru station wagon, white) was Seagull owing to the cb licence being SEGLL247, so it was fun telling the truckers to look for the little white seagull. Here in Australia the cops got called a double bubble or bubble gum machine due to them still having domed lights on the roof and the weigh bridge or station was the bbq so if the bbq was hot time to have a rest break or find some back roads to go around if you were over the load limit.
My big brother and I love this! Thanks for posting it. RIP Bandit, Snowman and the Smokey Bear. May we all meet traveling again!
all the kids here (teens - twenties) had CB radios back in the 70's, on fri/sat night, we all kept in touch by CB. was a great way to find all the parties, and what not. miss those daze!

Snowman what's your 20 is one of my favorite videos. Big Dog seems like a very good, cool man & truck driver.
Lived in up state NY back in the early 90s. My Dad had to do a work trip to Texas, but he only needed to be there for a day. So my Mom loaded us up in the family car and we followed my Dad in his truck and made a family vacation out of it. We got some CB radios from Radioshack, as this was before cell phones were mainstream. We used to love talking to the truckers. They were real nice too. When we got lost, we would ask the truckers how to get back on track. We even found one just passing the gas station we were at who was heading the same way. He told us to follow him and he would get us back to the interstate.
Thanks for the clip! RIP BANDIT, you will be missed!
3:21 "Whats your 20?" "Oh, about 4 miles ahead of you Turkey..." "HA...NOT FOR LONG!"
10-4, Good Buddy- Have a good one today, and a better one tomorrow!
I love this my dad was a tucks driver for a long time then he quit for a while and started back but he never taught me tht stuff and the bikers bikes get ran over is also my favorite part too
My dad used to own CBs when I was a kid. I also remember having a member card for high band channel 35, at the old age of 4! 😂 At the time in my part of the world, a licence was required to use a CB and used a variant of the 10 code. His setup was an mobile CB radio, a lollipop microphone, a little black SWR/Power meter and a Shakespeare antenna (8-10ft?) on a 40ft antenna tower. Looking back it was fun times with a lot of friends... Until deregulation which made channels a clusterfuck. Still this video makes me want to buy one. Although pretty much obsolete nowadays, I do find this kind of tech appealing
Awesome!!! Can never get enough of the truckies lingo or the big rigs.. !!
Thank you Steve Big Dog for your video and explaining about the C.B. radio. It must of been a groove job.
I MISS BURT. RENALDS RIP GOOD BUDDY UR MISSED BY PEOPLE WHO LOVE U.
wonderful video to have a real trucker explain it
I knew a guy from Long Island that couldn't get anyone to respond to his calls on the CB. I told him to trow in a ya'll every once in a while and stretch out your word, dropping the letter L from words that end in L. Anyway, though the static, he could cross over and pass for Southern and all the other truckers started talking back to him. We just laughed and laughed. Awww, good times.
This was great. Memories of Smokey 💨 and good info on our language out here on this road. Im headed into a Blue Beacon right now to get cleaned up. Thanks.
That was an Era when truckers were solid. I remember being a teenager and hauling my horses to events. I would trail along with an 18 wheeler because I knew they would help me out if something happened. I always felt safer with the CB and buddies along the way.

Best! Love youuuuu!!! Greetings from Sweden!
My handle is "streaker" I've had a two way in my truck since day one (31 yrs last October) and will have one on my last day. But it's not like it used to be. You could start ratchet jawing with someone in california and the next thing you know you're in texas. It used to be fun and you made new friends and ran into old ones and we used to help each other. It's not like that anymore. I really do miss it 😩

I have been on the CB since the 70s and no one talks like that on the radio anymore. If you want to get on the radio just remember the KISS method. Keep It Simple Stupid. Most truckers now have moved over to ham radio because of the range and because most places have made it OK to use ham radio when mobile but not CB. When you face a $300 fine and points on your license just for having a CB microphone in your hand it is best to not have one.

Glad to hear our fellow CBers from across the pond are still interested, if you want you can start your own chapter of our club in your area.
The smokey and the bandit truck was a kenworth.Nowhere like a freightliner
I drove for MidWestern Distribution from June 1986 until I quit in July 1987. My wife was pregnant and I couldn't be gone for 4 to 6 weeks at a time. I remember spending nights at a truck stop and hearing 'lot lizards' on the CB

I remember when I had my CB as well and back in the days and this movie was an absolute classic! Here is one for those of you though… in the scene when Banda is calling hot pants, the guy next to her Says that they are all going to go on a "red 22". Was that just their CB lingo to all form slow moving Line 2 slow down sheriff Justice or what was it? Curious to the answer if anybody knows of period :) thanks in advance. Rest in peace Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed, and Jackie Gleason.
