Snowboard Stance Angles I Use

Спорт

Extra info: If wanting to ride switch and do freestyle tricks where 'switch' is necessary, a low stance angle 'duck' is great. (like (15,-15), (9,-9), (15,-9) etc. If primarily riding in the forward position and don't ride switch, then angles like 21,9, or anything basically up to around 30 on the front foot, with a lesser angle on the back foot.

    Nate's reasoning doesn't really make sense to me. If the angles are positive or negative the difference between them would be the same? His would still be the equivalent of 12,-12?

    I typically ride +18, +6. It's not just about the aggregate angle between my feet, but I feel the positive stance allows me to go from edge to edge quicker/easier with more confidence. But that's just my take. As mentioned in the video, try out different stances, and go with what feels good for you.

    @SuzN And then there's plenty of pro snowboarders like Terje Haakonsen who use Forward stance and are of the opinion it's way better for carving, which it probably is.

    Stand duck on your snowboard and drive your back knee forward and towards your heel edge. Your body won't like it. This is what you do during a dynamic hard carve. Now turn your backfoot forward and try the same. It's very easy and comfortable. Often you see duck riders able to make great static/stacked carves but when they try to make a dynamic carve their heelside isn't as tight as their toeside.

    @SuzN Not for carving. You need to rotate your shoulders to be perpidicular to the slope this puts undue strain on your rear knee if you're running a negative angle in your rear foot.

    Love the boards you found online! It did notice some of the pro freestyle riders had stance angles close to 0, I don't understand that, but then again I'm not one of them. Used to use 15 -15, adjusted it a little to 18, -12 since it feels much better in the indoor lift. Maybe I will change it back to 15,-15 when getting in the mountains again. Just a few more weeks till the next trip!

    Stance angles are most important to help prevent knee injury. You want your knees to be bending "in plane". The angles will vary with your style, biomechanics and stance width. Some people can get away with a wide variation others will experience problems unless the angles are just right. To find your angles try this (indoors on carpet is best) 1) Set your bindings at your chosen stance width 2) Loosen your binding fixings so that they rotate on the board 3) Clip in and hop up and down twisting your feet until the landings feel natural. You shouldn't feel any "pulling" on either the outside or inside of your knees. 4) Carefully unstrap and note the angles.

I have always rotated the high backs to line up with the edge properly it makes all the difference. The

    So the high backs u always tilt?? Im flat footed, and because of that also duck footed and I still have to find the right stance. Last year i experimented a bit with the high back angle but i wasnt sure if i should. U never keep that one straight up?

  • @patthesoundguy

    @patthesoundguy

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@richburmond6761 I lean them both the same, but if one straight back works for you there is no reason why you can't run it that way but you may want to angle both the same. They key to it is to rotate the backs of the bindings in line with the edges... The high backs are usually slotted to allow them to rotate separate from the binding base plate. If you don't have any forward lean you will struggle with hell side turns big time. With my hard boots I was using ski boots for a long time with almost zero forward lean and it was so hard to keep my heel turns from chattering or sticking them like the toe side. It was the lack of lean. Had to spring for proper Deeluxe hard boots with adjustable forward lean.

    Funny stuff!! I come across the same bizarre set-ups! Picked up a sweet mly a few years back... Like the first sintered base ever, the strongest camber I've ever felt... And the marks for the bindings had it above the center point of camber ( set back camber by some 4"), and the width at 23"!! ... Must have been sooo stiff and unmanageable as to be despised!! ... As the core also indicated!!.(bout 7 hrs of p-tex work)

    After almost 10 years of not riding a snowboard, i bought a completely new Setup and had in the first hours massive problems to keep an edge bc. i used my old Stance (+9/+21). After bailing a few time pretty hard, i changed it to -15/+15 and it worked spot-on! Much easier to keep edges, turns and switch feels much more natural. Currently i ride -+18°+4cm stance

    I noticed that stance angle is set more by stance width or vice a verse. You cant have too wide stance with shallow angles, or too wide if angles with narrow stance or your knees wont track over your toes. That is, your knees will end up flexing side to side as you compress causing pain in some cases. The wider your heels apart, the wider the toe angles required.

    I don't ride switch much and avoid internal rotation of the back hip and knee as much as possible. this leads me to a 21/3 stance angle on a very stiff set up. I charge through ANY snow condition on ANY slope. with the pop and stability to easily pop over the cliffs when necessary. Nate's point is exactly how i feel. When i drop a cliff I do not want my hip to have to work against my knee traveling away from my momentum, it gives me impingement. I get full ass to grass on some landings with no discomfort the back foot being near 0 but slightly forward is also great on cat tracks too, i can sit all the way down and back on my right foot for manuals to pick up speed easily. not such a trivial thing when riding the stiffest setups around

    I'm a beginning snowboarder, but a long time skier. Thanks so much for making this video - especially the part about angles that won't work. I thought going "duck feet" instead of straight - which you call 0, would put too much stress on my knees and so I wouldn't do it. But after watching this video and the one called Wide Vs. Narrow Snowboard Stance by Matt Maniacci, I decided it might not be that hard to change my board's setup and see if it would help me. I've watched 10 Beginner Snowboard Skills - First Day Riding from SnowBoardProCamp over and over but wasn't getting anywhere, until your setup video and the wide/narrow stance video. I discovered I'm really goofy foot and making a wider stance with some duck angles has made balancing sooo much easier. Now if the southeast would stay cold long enough to make and keep some snow, I'm confident I'll be having some fun on the board instead of struggling so much. Thanks again!

    If you feel like you need a beginner lesson, definitely take one. Obviously the first days on something new are the hardest (and catching edges and such hurt a hell of a lot more than when we are young). Otherwise, something like stance angles like 18, -9 is pretty good for most people on a freestyle board to help be balanced and ride switch if they want. And as you progress, that can change quite a bit based on how you want to ride. Best of luck and happy shreddin'!

    Ryan can turn really good with a duck stance because he has developed a lot of hip flexibility. He turns his hips into the backside turn even with duck. Personally I don’t have that flexibility so I run 30/9 degrees with a giant uni cant. I also ride a lot of alpine so it makes sense to me. Riding switch is only done on long cat tracks so it’s not a priority.

    Alpine rider here, recently there have been lengthy discussions about what the maximum angle should be for softboots, it would seem the consensus among all the good pro riders (SG, JJA, etc.) discourages any one foot over ~30-33 degrees. When you get to the realm of 45 degrees softboots stop flexing fore-aft and starts left-right, which is not what it's designed for. For maximum power and safety, especially if you shred on the speedier side, keep it below 30. (There are literally horror stories of people riding BX course with normal duck, lands wrong and the front foot bends to the tip of the board. The boot folded, with the ankle in side, my ankle hurts from thinking about it...)

    I'm riding 30/25 on my extra wide Phoenix with plates. Makes for an amazing all mountain setup and I can still do switch demos when I teach. Not the most comfortable switch, but enough to do simple turns on greens. It's amazing how much better heelside carves are with positive angles on the back foot. Anatomically it allows more twist from the back foot for harder carves.

    I know this video is about stance angle, however I have a some what related question but not specifically about stance. My question is about your opinion on snowboarders upper body being in an open position. I have ridden this way before and felt like I ripped and carved just fine. Then two years ago I decided to take a lesson. My instructor told me I was not balanced on my board and said I was counter rotated. For the past two years I have been trying to ride more “balanced” meaning shoulders parallel to my board and my neck turned looking straight down my left shoulder when riding regular footed. I ride just fine in this position ie. “balanced” and not counter rotated, but man o man I miss opening up my upper body and ripping down the Mtn. My vision is also so much better when my upper body is more opened to my board. Your videos have inspired my to ride more open as it appears to me that is what you are doing. I guess the truth is I am looking for confirmation that riding with my upper body more open is not going to prevent future improvement in my riding which is basically what the instructor said when he corrected my upper body position and wanted me to work on looking over my left shoulder and keeping my shoulders parallel to the board. My neck always hurts when turning heel side and trying to look up the mountain when I work on staying “balanced” again meaning shoulders parallel to my board. Is my perception correct and you are riding in a very open upper body position when compared to your board direction? Needless to say you are ripping up that mountain with huge style! Also the energy you bring to the videos is the best in KZread land! Keep it up, I am a fan.

  • @RyanKnapton

    @RyanKnapton

    5 жыл бұрын

    In general I'd say opening up the shoulders is better for advanced riders and not as much so for beginners. If I didn't open up and be able to twist enough to do an uphill safety check on the heelside, I'd have been hit from behind 100's of times by now cuz of my big carved turns. Plus that rotation helps the heelside carve. In my 'how to really really carve #10' I address it a bit too.

    Yeah, you find similar things in other sports like weightlifting and cycling. I'm no health expert but I did some research into the matter after developing some knee discomfort when cycling (solved by replacing the pedals for ones with more float). As I understand it, from a physiological perspective it is essential that the knee tracks directly in line with the ankle and foot during load, whatever angle they happen to be facing. If not, then you get unnatural strain on a joint that is only really meant to function like a hinge. It can lead to muscle imbalances or chronic pain. So with that in mind I believe a wide range of stance angles should be just fine so long as that angulation is coming from the hips, allowing the knee, ankle and foot to remain aligned all the way through the range of motion.

    @@RyanKnapton I narrowed my stance about 2 inches and it is much better. It was way to wide a stance. The board can freely flex under my feet over bumps and troughs now. My stance was so wide I could push my knees together just a little and flex the board into a rocker shape. I am getting more of the feel for how much angle to tilt the board and speed. If I go too slow, it is easy to lean over farther than I can compensate in a turn. Too fast I can't get a full C shape. I found I might as well speed check and quickly get back into a carve. It was really getting fun and taking my mind of my worries. I offered someone help learning, but this green hill was too steep for her to progress very well. She got good practice on her toe edge control and adjusting the direction the board was pointed by twisting the board to control edge engagement. She couldn't stand up on her heel edge though, and it was way to steep for her to try a C shaped turn. Maybe walking down to a less steep area would have been better. :/ Ugh. "Hindsight is 20/20" is a cliche for a reason.

    Great video Ryan, those Craigslist boards made me laugh! Regarding making your highbacks parallel with your heel edge, when I was setting up my first board I mentioned this to the guy at the shop. He showed me something quite interesting, on my board he set the highbacks parallel to the heel edge and put my boots into the bindings. The back of the boots were only slightly making contact with the highback so if I used them like that, not so much energy would be going into the highback from the boot. He then rotated the highback until it made the most contact with the back of the boot. So effectively, it wasn’t parallel to the heel edge but it also wasn’t parallel to the binding. It was more like half and half. Do you have any thoughts on this? What he said and the demonstration made sense to me and was logical. Forward lean was set on the bindings, Cartels, 4 on the adjuster. Thanks for the video! Happy Shredding and QAPLA!

    That makes sense! I've just rotated binding highbacks to be even as much as I can with the heelside... I could imagine the boot sitting by itself might not line up perfectly... But I also could imagine when the massive forces that are being exuded on the boots and bindings during riding that it would match up more as the boots and such are having a certain amount of torque on em. Interested thought experiment for sure and indeed might have some real world effects on how it rides. I've thought for year that some bindings should be designed around certain angles for either forward carving, or duck footed. This would be next level with having both the boot and binding designed for the specific application.

    when you have both feet facing one direction, squating becomes problematic as your ankle-knee-hip are not in line, which adds wear to the knee joint. By having a duck-stance your knee will go in the direction of your foot more naturally, which provides the strongest support. You can circumvent this by having really really narrow stance distance, like maybe ~35cm.....
