What I’m doing is checking the snow pack for layers to try and predict if it’s safe to ski or not. But seeing it’s pretty flat it’s very safe to ski. So more just trying to understand what’s going on with the different layers as the season progresses.

Never had to deal with avalanches but understood exactly what you were testing (crazy to think someone figured out that technique) and that you would do this in an area before sking or on your way up the slope. Seems like an easy enough thing to be implied by watching.

@cececox6399

@@charleschurch5397right but it's tests like this that if taught correctly could save people's lives. Let's be honest there's no way of getting every single person living in or visiting heavy snowfall areas to buy and carry equipment. First there isn't anything that's portable and cheap to check for avalanches second even if it did exist there would still be people who can't afford it or even if they do pay up there's always people who forget to take it with them. By having SOME form of technique to test and that you don't need to carry anything extra for it's going to save lives. The most likely issue with this test is the person us too rough which would collapse it easier and it would make them think it's much weaker. I can't think of a way they could do this test mess it up and it leading to them thinking it's more stable than it is. So really it's going to help to deter the excessive risk taker's by telling them the snow is weaker not stronger. Y'all today rely on equipment WAY too much. What would you do if you didn't have access to machines...? Just because we have machines doesn't mean we should just give up on everything. They all have their own pros and cons but this is the only way you would still be able to use if you had nothing else on you. Which is kinda critical in survival situations.

They need at least a couple controlled variables to test anything. The snow's consistency might be different along the hill where it drifted or fell. Previous weather conditions will also play a major factor. Here in Newfoundland we sometimes get layers of powder with thin ice layers between due to a scattered warm day. Haha funny to see this come up in my shorts! I teach avalanche education. Good luck with this algorithm, but I’m glad to see you’re trying to do some education! If I could recommend one thing, start doing an extended column test instead of just the column test. The CT only tests for initiation of a possible avalanche, an ECT will test initiation AND propagation. There are plenty of times we will see lots of initiation in a snowpack (like faceted out), but very little propagation. A slab without propagation is less worrying than with both. Also don’t forget about fracture character/quality! That can often tell you more about avalanche sensitivity in these tests than the number of taps themselves.

Digging that giant hole to stand in was probably a better avalanche test then the small shovel patting test itself
Imagine flying down the mountain and then there’s a giant hole in the snow all the way down
The bottom layer of what he was showing was the frozen hard layer. If it snows on top of that layer it becomes a hazard and has a good potential for an avalanche. Soft snow on top can slide off the hard snow/ice. Stuff like this is done for Backcountry skiing or even resort skiing. If there's potential for avalanche they launch mortars to break it and create a safe area for us to ski/snowboard on.
