Sneaking Into Karate Combat's $1,000,000 Event

Спорт

I snuck into @KarateCombat with Oliver Enkamp! 👊💥
There are many styles in Karate Combat: Kyokushin is basically bare-knuckle Muay
Thai in a gi, while at the other end of the scale, American Sport Karate is a light-contact,
in-and-out fencing kind of style. In the interests of creating a level(ish) playing field, the rules of Karate Combat were designed to accommodate practitioners from all karate disciplines.
The Rules of Karate Combat:
- Three rounds of three minutes duration for regular fights.
- Five rounds of five rounds duration for title fights.
- Throws are allowed; takedowns (single, double leg) are not.
- Five seconds of ground ’n’ pound from a standing position is permitted. No ground-on-ground
work.
- The rules have some idiosyncrasies - for example, low kick to the calf is OK, but low kick to the
thigh is not. This is by design.
The rules are a living document which is updated frequently: the first season of KC did not allow
uppercuts, deeming them non-traditional, but these were then allowed after several people got
knocked out by uppercuts from guys who were clearly karate practitioners.
It is entirely possible - and probable - that the rules will undergo further evolution as Karate
Combat becomes further established and the talent pool becomes more experienced. Right now it is still only three years old and the idea of professional full-contact karate is a very
new thing in the karate world.
Over the years, Karate fighters have had to go into MMA or K-1 to make some money. Now
they can go to Karate Combat and stay in the art they love!

Having binged a their early competitions a few weeks back, there are a lot of lessons for karateka, in terms of practical application. First: if you practice point karate, you will pull your punches when you do it for real. The commentators note that early competitors start doing muay thai to unlearn this. Second, there is very little offline movement. In response to attack the movement is always backwards, never side wards (unless the pit wall gets in the way).. almost like we've internalized a lot of the embusen (yay!?). Third, few combos, lots of flailing punches, lots of kicks into the air. You can hear bas rutten complaining about the kicks, but you can also see very little of the disciplined punching that you expect/see in high level boxing or kick boxing. These are all problems that I've seen at my local dojo as well, so I'm really happy that we've finally got a forum where karate, which has been stagnant due to the prevalence of MMA, and other more fashionable arts, can get out of its rut.

I like it - mostly because it actually involves fighting skills without turning into the ridiculous high speed tag of WKF kumite, and is full contact without into the stand-and-pound of Kyokushin fighting. I would certainly watch it over either of these. The sloped outer boundary is an interesting idea, wonder how that figures into fighters' tactics. Anyway, thanks for this video Sensei Jesse. Cheers.

This was such a fun video. Also, Karate Combat has improved a lot over the first few fights. They listened to feedback on their camera work, which shows they care about what the fans want. Also, the 5 second ground and pound, certain illegal moves etc, makes the fights entertaining whilst also being brutal at times. Love it

You two need to do a podcast. Long form chats. With guests and karatikas. With this and the olimpics and cobra kai you'd get a massive following
