The bass player is Michael League and he is the band leader/primary composer. The band has a revolving door of cast members over 30 strong that come and go depending on availability for touring. You must do their song Lingus from this same album!

The current (August, 2022) membership is 19... bass, 3 guitars, 1 violin, 2 saxes. 2 1/2 trumpets. 3 1/2 keyboards, 3 drummers, 3 percussionists... (Justin Stanton plays keys & trumpet.) In live performances, lineup is usually 9-12 players with bass, 1 guitar, 1 drummer, 1 percussionist, 2-4 horns, 2-4 keys... the one constant is leader Michael League on bass. On the set with the video viewed here, the strings and 2 percussionists were added, while keyboard player Cory Henry has left the band & the then-main drummer, the current main drummer, 2 percussionists & 1 keyboard player did not make the trip to Europe for this album.

Larnell Lewis on drums. He wasn’t supposed to be part of this session, but something happened to make the scheduled drummer back out. They had Lewis fly over, and gave him some demos to listen to on the plane, all new songs he was unfamiliar with. I think he went straight from the airport to the recording studio and laid it down. Genius! The bassist, Michael League, is the band leader. They have a large, revolving cast of members. This song is no fluke, they are all this good!

I love Snarky, discovered them in their early days seeing them playing live at North Sea Jazz Festival. Yes they're awesome. Basically they are a music collective, with lots of rotating members and bassist Michael being their artistic leader. It would go to far going into names but most members by now have impressive solo careers and are considered music pioneers and virtuoso in their own right. Interestingly (for me anyway) I believe they are the drivers of a new jazz fusion rebirth and evolution. I actually like to call it "neo fusion" or jazz rock revival, and since Snarky Puppy became successful many other musicians have taken off where Weather Report, Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, Herbie, Chick and many many others left (or not). Those guys changed the face of Jazz from early seventies to early nineties and this new generation is kicking it too.

Bob Reynolds (alto saxophone) has a great video about the recording of this album where he talks about the horn section doing EXACTLY what you described and being white-knuckle after every solo thinking "we CANNOT mess this up" lol. And the beauty of these recordings is that they really were just regular people that flew in from all over the world to attend the live sessions. This entire album is legendary. Period.

I heard the drummer had only learnt this from a demo on the flight to the session. Whatever, absolutely awesome track. I saw them in the UK a few years ago at a festival. They spent an age getting their sound balanced between all the instruments, to the point that the audience was starting to slow hand clap, but when they started.. Wow!! You should also check out Michael League’s side project Bokante, also amazing in a different way. He’s the bass player and main driving force in SP.

Wait a minute... these guys are all older that high school age. I thought this was a high school band summer camp. I guess this is what Branford Marsalis was referring to as "half baked" in an interview while performing with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones at Lonesome Pine Specials. Look up Flight of the Cosmic Hippo.

Snarky Puppy are crazy good, so tight, so creative…every single one of them is on fire! 🔥 It reminds me a teeny bit of Dirty Loops, a trio from Sweden, who do, well anything from crazy covers to their own outstanding originals and collaborations with many other musicians (Cory Wong, Knower, Jacob Collier, just to name a few). I would absolutely love for you both to do a reaction to their cover of MJ’s “Thriller”. The amount of skill, musicianship and arranging skills which went into the making of this, are just insane… (not to mention the funk and the groove 😎). Thanks 🙏 And yeah, I’ve subscribed ☺️👍

'I thought the drums could've been better' Good one!. With the exception of the string section and the 2 additional percussionists all the musicians are in the band, in reality they're more of a collective than a band as when they play live the musicians rotate alot because they play and record with other artists.

took you long enough to get the puppy...this is influenced by what zappa did in the early 70's...for a start the drum is front and centre and the unusual time signatures...They are well worth watching some of their musical compositions on video.Michael League the founding member of Snarky puppy claims he never followed Zappa as an adult but his dead was a Zappa head who constantly had Zappa on rotation as he grew up.

I'm an old guy and heard that kind of music too much in about the mid 70th until the mid 80th. We simply called it Jazzrock. Today it's a kinda cold music for me. I was a bit surprised about the Snarky Puppy hype, but hey. I think it's for young people that don't know of Jazzrock from the 70th. Examples: Tony Williams Lifetime, Billie Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Pierre Moerlins Gong, Al Di Meola, Weather Report, Joe Zawinul, Miles Davis and many many more. 😉🇩🇪
