Also, please get the “We Like it Here” DVD. There’s a documentary included and it explains how unbelievable it is that this multi-day session even occurred at all. Larnell was called in, in an emergency…THE DAY BEFORE…and had to learn the material during his flight from Toronto to the Netherlands…then he went right to the session and played the snot out of it…incredible, all of them.

Successor to the Dixie Dregs and to a lesser extent, The Fents. But perhaps leveled up with a modern, better skill set? Even some Bela Fleck and the Flecktones riff jazz jams there.

@@JustJP Rodzilla here. Really appreciate your posting this, Justin. I had never heard of these guys and I went on a several hour binge to finish the long weekend. Very satisfying. All because of you!
If you ever feel like going all the way down the SP rabbit hole, their 20-minute epic called 'The Curtain' is just pure music heaven. It doesn't shred quite like this or Lingus but the sheer amount of moods and transitions the song takes listeners through is incredible. Keep up the great work as always!
My day gets better every time I hear Mark come in with that riff at the beginning. His tone cuts through so nicely and his playing is fantastic as always
I am so happy....all of you musicians were BORN, I really do. I love you guy's parents, for birthing such amazing musician specialists into this mundane world of hell. Life became tolerable from just experiencing this intricate musicianship and master class contribution. I don't understand why music does to the brain and spirit as it does. But I NEED it and can't balance out my life without it. It's another language another form of LOVING someone if thee creators want it to be. For my mental health.....please stay safe and healthy.
Nice jazz-rock/fusion song. What a great drummer.
You REALLY need to listen to the swedish band Dirty Loops! Three awesome guys who blends several styles in a good way. They recently released a nice version of Thriller in collaboration with guitarist Corey Wong and a fantastic horn section! But older songs from Dirty Loops is really worth checking out. 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥

Dr. Doug Helvering over on The Daily Doug occasionally does Dirty Loops. Great first listens!
Musicianship 11/10.
I have no idea who requested this but they are my new friend! Great pick, whoever you are! I’ll skip the fluff and get right to the point… ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!!!
I know, I’m jumpin the gun, without even having watched it (I am watching it!). This take (and Larnell’s drum solo) is RI-DIC-U-LOUS. The horn section…AHHH SO TIGHT. Bob’s guitar solo, crescendoing from that bizarre/cool dive bomb beginning to his blistering end… I can’t gush enough about this song. I’m kinda tearing up watching your your reaction. Thanks for checking this out. “Sleeper” and “Outlier” from this release are also amazing.

This is a band that should get a lot more attention than it does. So tight, so explosive.
and its all live too !!! Freaking awesome
What a great band! I have seen them 3 times, twice with Cory Henry. London 2015 at Hammersmith Apollo was the best! Their latest albums are not as good as We Like It Here (which refers to their reception in Europe at that time) but still decent enough. The drummer Larnell Lewis has a great solo album In the Moment, you shoud check it out!
Larnell is like a modern day Billy Cobham. He's a frickin' BEAST!!
Agree with David Anania, get the DVD, well worth the $. These guys are tight as hell. 🔥
I'll admit, I dismissed this for whatever reason. But I just watched another reaction channel do "Shofukan" and I was blown away. It usually takes a lot to get me to feel that. These guys take fusion to the best level. This is the third song that I've heard now and plan to check out more.
No pussyfooting here! Lord have mercy!! Git into my belly right now!!! I never expected to be so excited so early on a Saturday, but this exceptionally wondrous band and song assures me of equally great, or perhaps even greater music to experience from them. A return to Return to Forever, as it were. But also Zappa, Mahavishnu, Miles Davis, Brubeck, White Denim, Gong, Gilmour. The drummer and guitarists alone would make the band a phenom, but there are edgy horns, some great bass just for you, outstanding keys (and keyboards) and a perfectly edited video to show them off. The balls to tackle odd time signatures always affords a hat tip, but they really had fun with it, and thus added a higher dimension to it all. Muchas gracias, amigo! A++ PS: Do Quicksilver's very different "What About Me?"
A thanksgiving for Snarky. Unbelievable unison passages across the whole orchestra! Insane groove. Mind blistering. Take a listen to their venture with Jason Collier.....it is also quite fine.
Nice Snarky! I was recently watching them with Jacob Collier that was something else.
Justin, this album is a "must have" on vinyl. This record right here is absolutely one of my favorites in my collection for sure. It is a perfect record and you really need to get one.

Really Great Jazz Fusion from Snarky Puppy !!!! : D
always love the Snarky Puppy love, check out Question by fat night!
I can't believe you watched "Lingus" and didn't immediately watch all the other videos of that recording session. The worst of them is still really, really good. Others have mentioned the incredible back story re: Larnell Lewis. You should watch them all and you should watch the video Lewis made for Drumeo where they play a jazz piece for him that he had never heard, then had him play drums to it. Great tune and great reaction. More please.
Fusion heaven. One of the best live bands I’ve seen. And I’ve seen a lot of ‘em.
Everything snarky puppy is awesome! Xavi, shofukan, and Bad kids to the back would be great too! Thanks!
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the obvious Steely Dan "Aja" influence at the beginning, later it has a Pink Floyd sound to it as well. Nice track.
Of course you like Snarky Puppy :D Well, this is an incredible band (that I've seen live 3 years ago), and although I don't listen to this kind of music often, some of their tunes just blow my mind. For example: this one, wich I didn't know - so thanks for sharing What About Me! By the way ... do you know Flood by those puppies? If not, please give it a try ;)
If you like this then you might like Thank You Scientist. Check out their songs 'FXMLDR' (Fox Mulder), 'Psychopomp' and 'Mr. Invisible'
Good Morning JustJP, simply put I believe that you have one of the best, most diverse, well educated shows out there. Your delivery and personality are both fantastic and are other reasons for tuning in. A couple of decades ago I had a radio show on a local college station (John Carrol University in Cleveland) where I played some highly diverse music each week for about 8 years so I can certainly appreciate where you are coming from. As for this band and it's incredible music....each piece has room for multiple solos and this has one of the most sublime guitar solos I've ever heard. Each musician is at the top of his\her game and they love what they're doing. I might compare them to the Dixie Dregs for unbelievable musicanship and the oy of performing together. You might like to step back and give a listen to Twigg's Approved, Odessey, Broad Street Strut or I'm Freaking Out. Your ears will thank you!!
I think there are more aliens on our planet than anyone actually knows 🙂😎👽
Hello, Justin. Dave from a cold, soggy London (more November Rain). All I know of Snarky Puppy is that Jacob Collier, an artist I really like, has played with them, and I've seen that video (that's Lingus, isn't it?). Fantastic ensemble playing here, especially the drumming. As with all fusion bands, I would need to hear more to know whether I admire them more than like them. A similar band I have latched on to is Thank You Scientist, where the warmth of Salvatore Marrano's vocals complements the steely perfection of the band's musicianship.
Can't really say I'm a fan of this, even though I like jazz fusion stuff. But hey, it's always good to hear something new.
It's such a natural way to set about exploring, to find new sounds, if you "fusion" things. Literally compose one with the other, listen, hear if it sounds worth taking further. Maybe it's better to generally avoid stuffing the result into a named genre, to box it in again, though. (So I think it's a plus that you're not managing to pin a name on what they do - apart from "everything". And isn't everything the ultimate fusion? All at once it would probably average out to flat grey chaos, but serially, like this, in a way it's like getting to share in the very germinal stages of their creation process (maintaining the illusion that this is not just all the "keepers"). ... oh .. ) (I think) (It's probably better to just be less parenthetical, hey?)
I just recently became aware of this band on the best Jazz station in the world "Jazz FM 91.1 Toronto" WOW !!! Snarky Puppy eh !!
If you like this, but also like something heavier, I can recommend Sound Struggle, a progressive jazz-funk/metal band out of Berkeley School of Music. They have release two albums so far and there are a couple of live tracks on KZread.
Oh it was ok 😆
If you love this as I do, then I promise you and all of us loyal followers will love, love, love “ Brian Augers Oblivion Express “ Straight Ahead album. I think if you start on title song side you’ll end up playing entire album over time. This was fabulous though! Straight up my alley.

Knock me over with a freakin' feather! There's actually another Brian Auger fan around here?! You are spot on, Bruce. Straight Ahead is a fine album. So is Second Wind, with the cover of Eddie Harris's "Freedom Jazz Dance." Also the album Befour, with the cover of (again) Eddie Harris's "Listen Here" and Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage." I was fortunate enough to work for a fairly progressive FM "back in the day" and managed to sneak in a whole lot of Auger. No wonder you -- and I -- like Snarky Puppy so much!

So tight, it burns... The drumming is definitely making me feel unworthy.
Arf, I said throw me a bone Man. and you threw in the whole carcass! I'm a happy dog now that I heard bass & drums pound and the guitars and keys kept me chasing my tail round and round. When there's playing like this, that's where this mutt will be found. Peace and pass the kibble please.

Hm... Not sure I'd buy the album, but I'd for sure go to a concert with them. This has left me feeling a wee bit stressed, so a live setting is probably preferable for me.
Damn my old age, I've just heard too much. Firstly, this was good, no doubt about it, these guys obviously top muso's. But you can't help make comparisons. I'm hearing Return to Forever, a hint of Zappa, Jeff Beck etc... Undoubtedly good, but did it knock my socks off, have me running to the record store... no. Great guitar, a little too much drums, but don't feel like it's anything I've not heard before. If you'JP plays more i'll listen, otherwise...

Music 4 Astrophysicists. Has it got any Soul? It’s certainly got Body. Fernando Partridge, son of Alan, told his Pa about them. Alan prefers Level 42 but doesn’t want Fernando to know that he air-drums to this in the car on the way to the New Forest to drive his new automobile at high speeds. Clinical. Impressive. Show off business. Tip Top Gear. 21st Century opera
I am still trying to get more obscure bands like KENSO "from Japan" some love. They were amazing players of unique Prog-Fusion
I’m going to play producer here. Of course a roomful of skilled musicians is going to make something decent but, is it memorably inspiring, to me no. Take the great parts, keep, cut the busy for no reason parts, write something with more feeling. Pare down the the roomful and give the players some space to breathe and blossom. I will listen to any SP you play. Just seems too busy to me. Almost a science experiment. Glad I saw it though. Peace and snarky Music
Like another oldie but goodie viewer, Jfergs, just said below,...great players but my impression is they are simply talented students of all the Fusion that has come before like Brian Augers Oblivion Express, which was also mentioned below. ! Not really breaking into any new territory or offering what I haven't heard before.
Although the musicians are technically excellent, compositionaly, it's just a lot of solos stuck together, like most Jazz fusion.
Great playing and all, but this kind of jazz-fusion has already been heard for years for my part. nothing new or groundbreaking.
