The first time I saw this version of Lingus I was floored at how "in the moment" they were. For any musician, that is the holy grail..to be so well rehearsed that your music literally *plays you*... For improvisational musicians it is where they seek to exist.. in the moment, but unlike most other forms of music, improvisational musicians are literally conversing in the moment.... and its amazing to see when it happens sooooo fluidly.

Larnell Lewis (the drummer) learned this whole set on a 7 hour flight to get to this gig. Snarky's other drummer (Sput) couldn't make it. So Snarky called Larnell last minute. He's been with the band since then. Larnell is an AMAZING drummer!!! I mean... AMAZING!!!! Thank y'all so much for sharing this reaction with us (ME)!! When you thanked Lex for sharing this gift with you... yeah, I broke down and CRIED some more!!!

Cory Henry's keyboard solo can only be described by one word: historic. It is the new standard of greatness against which all other solos will now be compared. Now, consider that the drummer, Larnell Lewis, was a stand-in. The regular drummer had a family emergency and Larnell got called in 24 hours prior to the recording sessions and learned all the songs on the plane overnight! Also, the other keyboardist who just smiles and shakes his head has not one, not two, but SIX Grammies to his name!

The keyboards of Cory Henry are fantastic, but the other musicians are doing incredible things too. The brief sax solo is nutz and as a former trumpeter I just can't believe how those guys nail their parts. I have Snarky Puppy CDs and have watched all the videos. There are 10 more songs just as good waiting in the wings.

The reason the other keyboardist Shaun Martin was shaking his head like "I'm outta here!!" during Cory Henry's keyboard solo is because this video was the second take of the same song.....and on the first take, Cory Henry's solo was completely different than the one he improvised on the second take.

Go watch the KZread video where they talk about this studio album... The drummer never played this tunes before this, hopped on a plane to the Netherlands, and learned all of it in 7 hours in his head on the flight. As for the keyboard player that took his head seat off, he's won 4 grammy's on his own. Just to out in perspective of how talented this group is.

What I don't feel is appreciated enough - Snarky Puppy is mainly about improvisation. None of them is playing by notes. they just agreed on a theme and maybe some boundaries. But within those, it's just telepathy. Yes, there are some great solos in there. But what really blows me away is how tight that horn section is. What is this - some Borg-like mind melt ? How can they be so accentuated and tight at that tempo ? Yes, Corey Henry does some great keyboard solo in this song. But listen to that horn section!

I don't remember how I first stumbled upon this video and I was previously unfamiliar with Snarky Puppy, but it blew me away on the first view. Not only is a well written song, but all the musicians are monsters with incredible chops and feel. The things that stood out for me were the kick a$$ drumming by Larnell Lewis (who learned the song on the flight to the gig), the perfectly synched "behind the beat" feel of the horn section and of course....the jaw dropping keyboard solo by Cory Henry.

They are musicians at the top of their game, they enjoy every second that they play no matter where they are and ... best of all ... they are all good buddies. There is so much to know about this particular album and I would recommend that you watch the short KZread doco about the making of it, Michael League, bass player, composer and 'leader' ( "some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them" as Shakespeare said) is the impish motivating force behind the band and you won't believe the prep that kinda happened prior to this gig happening :) Thanks guys I've been waiting for this since you did Shofukan and you didn't disappoint :)

Snarky Puppy is a collective, with around 20 members. The leader and the writer of the songs is the bassist Michael League. He calls the musicians and sees who is available, but they are all fantastic musicians. He does have a core of musicians who turn up to most gigs. The other main drummer of them is Sput, who is great too, but Larnell Lewis is a beast. Like you, I heard this and oh wow. They're calling it nu-jazz, but it sounds like jazz funk to me. And I love it. Steely Dan are and were primarily a studio group. What you're seeing here is a group of people recording an album while performing to an audience. Instead of speakers, the audience wear headphones that are wired to the sound booth. They can do it live, they can do it in the studio.

Top 2 bands for me: Steely Dan (all-time no. 1) and Snarky Puppy. I’ve watched literally about 30+ Lingus reactions and really liked and appreciated yours… especially as you’ve demonstrated your great musical taste during your Steely Dan-appreciation journey. A few things: (1) Shaun Martin - the keyboardist reacting to Cory - has 6 Grammys: he’s amazing too; (2) Larnell Lewis learned his drum parts for all but two of the album’s songs during his 7 hour flight to the studio in the The Netherlands; (3) unfortunately, I don’t think Cory Henry tours with them now. Love your channel.

So glad you posted this reaction. I watch this video at least once/week. You’re right, you do get a rush listening to this. ALSO, I saw Steely Dan on two consecutive nights a few months ago in NJ. The boys did the Aja album one night plus some other hits and the other night was sort of a greatest hits set with some deep cuts thrown in. Here’s what I can say about the shows. Donald does not sound like he once did and yes he is getting up there in age, and Walter Becker was missed. The back up singers were great and picked up some of the slack for Donald. The band was tight as hell with the great guitarist Jon Herington keeping things on an even keel. The standout to me in almost every song on both evenings was the drummer, Keith Carlock. He is a beast and well worth seeing. I’m jealous, you’ll be seeing Snarky Puppy. They were not the opening act a few months ago so SD must be rotating various acts as openers. I’m sure you’ll have a great time and please give us all a concert review. 😄

So much to like about Snarky Puppy! As a keyboard player, I'm most impressed by these parts. There are sections where I felt like the keyboards would burst into flames - literally. It's tricky to try to single out any individual or any instrument, but besides the keyboards, they have, without a doubt, some of the best percussionists around. If you want to hear virtuosity like this with more musicality, I'd recommend Dirty Loops. Start with Coffe Break is Over and go right to Work Shit Out. If these hook you, there's SO much more to explore with the Loops as well as their individual side projects!!!

That song was also my first Snarky Puppy jam and I have gone down the rabbit hole with this "We like it here" set of videos and also "Family Dinner" which was recorded with a live, small audience just like this one, however all of the songs feature a guest vocalist! That's actually heartwarming, but that's not the real reason, the real reason is they knew they were going to record this album and release it on DVD as well and that's the only way to do it with audience, because it they had live speakers, it could have created more and more problems for the engineering crew and I think it might not have been possible because the brass and the drums are naturally louder and would bleed into the mix. Hence : No speakers for the audience. Or maybe there are no speakers at all in this space

A few points to mention: 1. Each audience member has a pair of ‘silent disco’ bluetooth headphones which are receiving output from the main mixing board. At least 3 SP albums were recorded this way. 2. Cory Henry, the keyboardist playing that insane solo is no longer with the group and is now heading his own group. 3. Larnell Lewis, the drummer on this album, may or may not be the drummer for SP’s current tour. He was actually a last minute replacement for their regular drummer who didn’t get his passport straightened out and missed the session, which was recorded in the Netherlands. 4. Larnell learned this entire album ON THE PLANE RIDE THERE. 5. The group SP was formed at what was once North Texas State University (since renamed University of North Texas) which has been for decades THE university for jazz musicians. SP are now based in Brooklyn. 6. Consider listening to a more recent album like “Emmigrance” for an example of what SP’s sound is currently like.

Phantastic piece of music, so much fun, to watch these guys on stage. I first heard of Snarky Puppy through you and in the last weeks I watched and listened to several of their concerts in youtube. Last week I watched their 2014 concert at Java Jazz Festival. Sunday night I wrote to Michele about it and told her Lingus was my favourite song of the concert. She wrote back "what is this telepathy ? I was going to do a BMC request ... and then you record this on Monday night. Do we have a telepathy triangle now ? :-) Talking about the "concert exchange": I thought the same as you Nick ... Stevie Winwood is a legend ... but not everybody's taste; I for example don't really like his voice, which he is loved for by many others. So I also would have been glad, when I hear, that Snarky Puppy is playing instead ...definitely more fun. And asking for a refund, because the opener of a concert is exchange, is the opinion of one person - I guess most of your subscribers would prefer to see Snarky Puppy. Fun fact : Nick, I played to you last year a record of Mark Lettieri - Starcatchers ...we both loved it ... it had a great brass part in the end. Well, when I checked infos on Snarky Puppy, I found out, Mark Lettieri is a member, he's one of the 2 guitar players .............AND !!!! They will (hopefully) play in Cologne on Oct 14th ...guess, who's gonna go :-)

Cory Henry. An amazing keyboard player. The whole band is amazing, but Larnell Lewis (Drums) is outstanding! Every track is outstanding on this album. My favorite tracks are "What about me" and "Outlier".

WHAT a solo on the keys! Impossible. BOTH hands in unison through the most amazingly difficult passages imaginable, then the tightest best funkiest stage band comes in. Energy and improvisation off the charts. Jazz is so great when it 'happens' it happens. In person would be amazing. Is Steely Dan coming to Denver? I thought Snarky had a different opening band.

Finally! I've been anticipating your reaction to Lingus once you reacted to Shofukan. Cory Henry's keyboard solo is on my all-time faves. Larnell Lewis killed it on the drums. Amazingly, he was a last-minute replacement and learned the songs on the plane. Saw Snarky Puppy a few years ago. Love them. Please check out "Something" with Lalah Hathaway.

Steely Dan should be opening for Snarky Puppy! No downgrade on your tickets - at all! I saw Snarky Puppy live at the Gilmore Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo Michigan. Because it was a keyboard festival, what did they do? They brought THREE keyboard players! I think there were 16 musicians on stage! It was amazing and afterwards, they were all out at the front door of the venue, for meet and greet conversation and autographs. Make sure you bring posters, LPs or CDs and a sharpie!

I've got you two to thank for getting me into Snarky Puppy after watching your reaction to Shofukan. I commented at the time that I was aware of the name, but assumed with a name like that, they were a punk or thrash band. I'd recommend Binky from the album Ground Up, it's so euphoric with elements of dance music, watch the live version. We Like It Here is such a difficult album to get hold of though, especially here in the UK. I've been trying ever since I saw your Shofukan reaction, but on most sites it's either sold out or they're asking silly money for it. I saw Steely Dan with Steve Winwood supporting back in 2019 in Birmingham, when they did a short tour of the UK. Stevie was great, Dear Mr Fantasy, John Barleycorn, Can't Find My Way Home, Gimme Some Loving, he did them all. He then came on with the Dan to play keyboards and sing on Pretzel Logic. It was a fantastic night, the only slight disappointment was no Babylon Sisters (which they'd done the previous gig in Manchester), but that's just a minor quibble. If they use the same guitarist Jon Herington, that was with them when I saw them, you'll be blown away.

A group of revolving stunning performers. I've only seen Sax player Bob Reynolds in person. I missed them locally at the Orpheum last year...BUT...I'm seeing Steely Dan at the Hollywood Bowl in May and it was supposed to be with Steve Wonder (I'd been waiting for this show for two years) and it was announced that he's missing the tour (Huge bummer) BUT...Snarky Puppy are filling in for his remaining tour segment...so...not too shabby! Dan and the Pups!

You're right, it wasn't/isn't a competition between the musicians. Corey Henry (the soloist) was doing his thing at his appointed time. Shaun Martin (a 5 time GRAMMY AWARD WINNER) was just expressing his own amazment at Corey's musical savvy on the board... which makes that whole scene so awesome!!!
