Old Composer REACTS to SNARKY PUPPY SHOFUKAN | A Composers Thoughts 🤙

This is probably one of the first reaction videos that I didn't really have much of a reaction more than just absolutely loving the track. Of course, I did find a few things to say :) Thanks for all your comments.

    As a brass player, I feel like pointing this out. In the first couple minutes of the song, the trumpet player does some really nice lipbends. That’s an easy thing to learn, but NOT an easy thing to master. You have to rely on air strength, lip strength, ear training, and you have to memorize the feeling your lips make to get the air down there. Fantastic job.

    Funny...about 2/3 of the way through, I was thinking to myself “what a sweet video production they got going here”. Then the vocal chant came in during LL’s drum break and I’m like “no, no, get the camera on the drummer, he’s effin killin it!” 😂🎶🦐

    This song is so freakin’ cool. Mike League said in an interview he wrote that first guitar riff while trying to sing something Eastern-sounding, so it’s a really funky scale (B-C-D-D#-E-F#-G-A-B), and it’s really cool how he utilizes that. Listen for the C in the bass during the end of the solo section.

    I had never heard of Snarky Puppy, but recently I had a video where Larnell Lewis listens to Enter Sandman once and then plays the drums show up on my sidebar. He got most of the song in that first listen. It was really amazing to see. So then when I see the name Snarky Puppy, the band he plays for by you, I have to listen. This is not the type of music I typically go for, but it's really, really good. I'm definitely going down this rabbit hole and see what else is out there. As far as format of your show, I think there is room for both, but really, do what you feel the most. I'll still watch your videos and appreciate it because I know you bring just that little bit of knowledge that allows me to appreciate songs more.

And since you mentioned the Tower of Power Horns, I've been thinking of The Fearless Flyers as the new Tower, with Snarky P's Mark Lettieri and Vulfpeck's Cory Wong and Joe Dart combining forces with a three-sax line-up and a KILLER drummer. I think you might like them. A LOT.

  • @soundmangaz
    @soundmangaz3 жыл бұрын

    Interesting note, Larnell actually has three snare drums on that kit. Obviously his main snare and the 'fx' snare (smaller to his left with the splash cymbal). The third one is actually where his first floor Tom would be. It's a deep 14 inch snare, detuned so as to sit right where a 14 inch floor would sonically and with snares off, but with snares on it gives a big beefy low snare sound. It's a trick Larnell picked up from Sput, who also plays for snarky puppy (amongst others). Just found your channel through the snarky puppy and Mars Volta videos. Both massive influences on my playing, nice to see/hear your views. Keep up the good work buddy.

    Loving the reactions man, would love to know some of your own background and experience as a composer! Also, as opposed to Dorian, I found it more harmonic minor, specifically Phrygian dominant, for the section with the guitar riff at least. Cant quite figure out the other part though

    Hi another Old fella here. Really enjoying your reactions, and even your “non-reactions“. You have a wealth of knowledge thank you so much for sharing. I for one would be very happy for you to do more in-depth discussions of the music. Also less heavy metal would be my preference. But thanks again very enjoyable and interesting.

    Just subscribed. Nice reaction. I've watched 4 or 5 from you so far. We're close to the same age, so I have enjoyed some of your references. Been a fan of Snarky Puppy for many years. Justin Stanton, that you mentioned in you analysis (one of the trumpet players/keyboardists, grew up in our area. I'm a local band director, so I remember him when he was in high school and in undergrad at ETSU. Since you like percussionists, have you listened to an older group called "The Rippingtons"? They have a good percussionist as well. Also, if you want to hear some different music from Snarky Puppy, check out their 2 "Family Dinner" albums featuring different vocalists on each tune.

    I love this song, and I wasn't really sure why at first. Then I realized it reminds me of Chuck Mangione- especially with the flugelhorns- but also because it's got that middle-eastern feel to it that just sounds like a band of gypsies coming through town. Would love to see you react to Chuck Mangione's "Bellavia." So many good vibes there. Chuck was known for the amazing band he could put together, and this is right up that alley.

    Great video! If you still want to make videos about them, I really recommend you either react or discuss a few other songs from Snarky Puppy: - Something with Lallah Hathaway. It’s absolutely stunning. - Don’t you know with Jacob Collier and Big Ed Lee. - Ready Wednesday. If you listen to this one, please listen to the original and not the remixed and remastered version, as they changed a lot to the worse in my opinion. Or make a comparison between the to versions, that would also be pretty cool. This is a great example for highlighting just how much power producers have when mixing a song. -The curtain. This one includes the metropol orchest. All tracks on this album aren’t songs anymore, they’re compositions. And they are really well done. -Semente. The following songs including video are from their studio recordings so they don’t have Videos anymore. But many of them from a composer’s view are very interesting, including this one. Tarova from the same album is also good. -Xavi, Chonks and Bad Kids to the Back are all from their newest album: Immigrance. I definitely recommend you listen to Xavi as it is a polyrhythmic masterpiece. Side Note: Some of these songs are also featured on their album: Live at the Royal Albert Hall. However I definitely recommend you check out the originals before listening to the live versions.

    Listen to bad kids to the back from the new snarky puppy album - it’s a great amalgamation of their style - it also has three drummers (I’m a drummer so that’s my favourite bit)

    Another aspect of your channel I find appealing is that it opens up new styles of music to many of us. Some of the metal guys/ladies might not otherwise be listening to SP, and conversely some jazz/fusion folks might not be familiar with the prog metal scene. Eye (and ear) opening!

    When I saw Snarky live in Memphis, they closed with this, before the "Lingus" encore. Hearing the whole crowd singing the final chorus was uplifting. That 5/4 luck in the guitar had to be handled by the lone guitarist on the gig, Mark Lettieri, the guitarist in the middle here. Michael used that lick to introduce the band over, so Mark had to keep it up, by himself, for around 3 minutes. Mark has said his hands have cramped up several times doing that.

    I understand what you're saying about the Dorian "vibe" but this very clearly has a b2 going on which lends more towards Phrygian in my mind. It has a very exotic flavor to me.
