Snapper Mower Slipping Clutch “Rebuild”

Okay, so it’s a half ahh rebuild. Using cork gasket as a solution may not last long at all. I would really take a older mowers hub and drum transmission to retro fit on this mower. For reliability of course.
See how this video does.
Thanks for watching.

Welcome back Elijah! I wish I had enough yard for a riding mower but here in Socal I'm lucky to have a patch a grass. Usually all I need is a weed eater. 😁 tell us more details on the mower.. Thanks for sharing!

Spent a good portion of the day mowing, not with the snapper unfortunately but with a Bad Boy Zero Turn. Cleaning up some over grown bits around the farm. That sorta thing. Well, with a big enough yard you can ride minibikes all you want with out the neighbors or the law getting on to you.

The correct Snapper driven disc has a lining that is glued to the inside of the disc. The lining in aftermarket discs are just set in place and will slip. Get a good adhesive and glue them in. The reason Snapper went to the slip clutch was mandated by the Consumer Products Safety Commission

I see, the original was worn out. It didn’t move at all. Just used it for a couple hours and it moves good now. Even hauled a lawn mower trailer full of fire wood with it. Sure what I did wasn’t right, but it works. And that’s all it matters.

If one of the gears selections is slipping more than the others then check the yoke slot, it's probably worn out in that area. It's the slot where the center drive inserts a guide and roller through. Over time it vibrates in its position and digs away the material in the yoke. Mine has a plate welded to the yoke path to correct the wear and the drive guide follows a straight path now that doesn't stray to far away and keeps the drive system with a tight pull to the drive platter.

I always wanted to take on of these, get rid of the mower deck, put on some tracks and a snow plow. Mini-half track!

I still have the one that my dad bought when I was 10 years old. Put me on it mowing the 8 acre yard. Been mowing on it ever since. I am 66 years old now. On engine #11 or #12, as I have lost count. Just did a complete rebuild with all parts disassembled, cleaned, worn parts replaced, good parts primed and painted, new bearings, seals, and hardware. Completely disassembled the differential, chain case, and every part on the mower. Was a week long project, but, now I have a new mower that will probably outlive me. I did repurpose an old air compressor tank and made a much larger fuel tank, mounted on the back two support rails and the thing got a brand new aftermarket seat. Complete rewire and new battery. It runs and cuts like the new machine that it is. It is a brand new 1968 Snapper Comet 30. I like the old ones, as they do not have all the idiot proofing safety switches and interlocks on them that are additional points of failure.

The rubber drive disc's are all the same.. The one for my 1968 comet is the same part # as the one for my soft clutch in my 2005 model. Only difference is I have to pull the liner out for my 1968 model. The soft clutches are fine when they are set up correctly and have good components, they are very reliable.. I'd just order a new friction disc with the inside liner and make sure you put the thrust washer (the big cardboard washer) in between the rubber drive disc and outside plate. Then make sure the drive disc hanging off the engine crank is set to the correct depth of 3 and 13/16 inches from the bottom side of the frame or underside of the engine plate. **Not from the bottom side of the engine!** That seems like it may be the real issue here. If you have a good rubber friction disc, and the transmission is still good but it still wont drive... It is almost always the depth of the drive disc hanging off the bottom of the engine ***OR...Buying a generic disc without the liner.** You absolutely have to have a liner for the soft clutch style setup or it inst going to drive or drive intermittently.

It can be anything at this point. I don’t know anything about these lawn tractors. I just learn from taking them apart without looking up how to to begin with first. The clutch is horrible on this. This is a terrible design for I guess a “smoother engagement” Anyways, I did use the mower for a good couple of hours a few days ago and it didn’t slip at all. Just got to get the electrical in order and it’ll be a fully functional mower.

Where you put that cork padding there is supposed to be a piece of what appears to be thick leather. That paper round gasket is supposed to go between the first plate with the cork material and the metal looking friction plate.

Yeah, that’s how it is. I’m really thinking about robbing the transmission out of another old snapper and putting it into this one. This is such a dumb design. The others don’t have this friction clutch thing. They’re directly bolted into place.

@@ElijahMiniBikes You DON'T have to rob another transmission, it doesn't have a transmission problem, is this YOUR mower?? I have the old type hub that you are familiar with, if you shoot me your mailing address I will send it to you and additional info FREE of charge, I worked at the factory.

Sir, I worked at the factory from 1972 till it was closed in 2015, it's BEST to get a parts manual & Owners Operators manual for the actual Model you are working on they are NOT all the same, different adjustments, different parts etc, even though they LOOK similar, that is the SMOOTH clutch model.
