    One of the VERY few videos of actual snap oversteer. You can tell how he did react properly at first by staying on the throttle, so he didn't spin out from lift-off oversteer, but then he countersteered too far and/or too long = snap oversteer.

    Can attest to this as I managed to make the car snap oversteer at the crainer curves by putting a wheel on the grass with all the weight over the front at high speed. Slow it down to 1/4 playback speed and you can see around 3:07, the back end got light over the curb on the right-hander. Maybe he let off the gas..not sure ... it looks like the weight shifted forward about a second later, and the driver over corrected on the steering, and that put him into the grass on the left. Maybe a little less countersteering and not lifting abruptly on the throttle, and it could've been saved in a four wheel drift. Maybe. Once he it the lawn it was over. In a front-engined car if you weight shift forward, it can get tail happy, but there is less weight out back to throw around so it is easier to get it back. With a mid or rear engined car, there is a lot more momentum in the wiggly rear end. You're throwing the weight of the engine/trans back and forth. That's why you want to come in a smidge slower than a front-engined car and smoothly get on the power in the turn to keep the rear end firmly planted. Balancing traction between front and rear wheels matters more when the drivetrain weight is on the rear axle and steering is on the front axle.

    So many in the comments saying this is not snap oversteer, it seems a lot of people have the wrong idea what snap oversteer is, and this is CLEARLY a text book example of snap oversteer. (Snap oversteer is when you loose grip in the rear and corrects it and it snaps back into place with such force and momentum that it sends you into often a 180 or 360 spin the other way).

  • @bradman7281

    @bradman7281

    That's because snap oversteer is caused by driver error. Snap oversteer happens when the rear tyres lose grip and slip out, causing the driver to countersteer, but then the rear tyres suddenly regain grip and launch the car the other way.

  • @christcarsandcountry6812

    @christcarsandcountry6812

    4 жыл бұрын

    feral4mr2 It's not to hide mistakes - snap oversteer, by definition, is caused by mistakes. Those mistakes are especially easy to make in an MR2 because of the car's design. Snap oversteer is when the tail end begins to step out one direction, then as the driver countersteers and lays off the throttle. The tires find grip suddenly and the car will quickly pendulum the other direction. MR2 drivers commonly make this mistake since in a lightweight, lower-power, grippy mid engine car, it's easy to make these mistakes since it doesn't take as long for the tires to suddenly find grip as it would on an FR. Snap oversteer can occur in all drive systems, of course, but still. MR2s make it way easier.

    It's super useful to go f*** around in your car and get a fuel for sliding it just in case it ever happens. Mr and full rear engine cars may work better to an extent but honestly it's not worth the trade off. Even my Mustang versus my mom's Corvette, the mustangs rear end is a tendency to slide out a little bit easier but if it does it's a lot more savable than on the Corvette. the Corvettes were in with the engine even being as far back as it is does not like to slide as much and can get real sketchy.

    Till now, I didn't realize the MR2 became well known (and kinda meme-ified) due to snap oversteer. I was kinda wondering why the MR2 is a bit more "gimmicky" (I don't know how to describe it in any other way) than any other MR car I've driven in Gran Turismo 5.

    Yes, you could move the gas tank and the battery and the radiator and few other bits and bobs to the front and that would help a bit but still these are mid engine cars, you don't want to offset that.

    It would, but it's a stupid idea. The light front end is THE reason why all serious performance cars are mid/rear engine. With the center of mass so far in the rear you can keep traction in corners for longer, the downside is just that when traction is eventually lost, it happens more sudden and quicker and you have to react more precisely (only lift throttle a little bit, stop the countersteer before the car is straight again).

    Every mid/rear engine car is prone to lift-off oversteer/snap oversteer, it's just what happens when the center of mass is so far back. In fact even FR cars can do both if you provoke it. But modern sports cars probably have lots of tweaks to avoid it.

    Jordan Adams I have a MR2 as well SW20(MK2) although mine is guilty of oversteering, it doesn’t make it a bad car. Besides correcting oversteer is pretty easy, all you have to do is to buy cheap tires and go to an empty and spacious lot to experiment on how to correct an oversteer. The reason why MR2s are looked upon as a bad car, is just because people are either reckless or inexperienced mostly both.
