Love this design for home prototyping projects. Better then those crappy Desktop Pick n Place machines which take longer to setup for a job then the job itself. Just load the tiny little components and start assembling. 0201s I no longer fear you..

A friend of mine and I had started to design such a machine before his untimely demise. Looking at the CNC based pick-and-place machines we decided that our projects could easily be handled by simpler pick-and-place machines that were basically, well, this type of manual machine. Frankly, two to three thousand dollars is a ludicrous amount of money to spend on what amounts to a mechanically stabilized manually pick-and-place machine. Yes, software on the tablet could be used to simplify the task, especially comparing your BOM to a "panelized" boards or maybe even having testing protocols, but that type of software could easily be the domain of an active user community. The only fairly advanced parts of this system seem to be modular tape advance system, and a fairly quiet pump (as opposed to a noisy fish pump). O.K., the magnetic board retention is kind of cool too. But, still, 2k - 3k for hobbyists? For an oscilloscope sure. For a manual pick-and-place machine... naaaaaaaah.

Great product, I would gladly use it for my prototyping needs. If anyone is interested in selling theirs, let me know.

If it would cost 10 times cheaper then it would be no brainer. For this price tag, I better have fun with openpnp.

This is fantastic. But 2800$ is a bit pricy for what it is. I understand it is made in US, and there was some R&D involved in designing and making it available, but it is not that good price. For that price (or maybe ~500$ more), it should have motorized x, y, rotation, and nozzle z and nozzle pump, with option for a component camera. Stepper motors are cheap, and even if initially software is not available for automatic PnP, it would help a lot with small components, and people could start writing scripts to do own PnP procedures.

Nice Idea but the price is way off. Automatic pick and place machines are very complex on hardware and software and that machine costs the same, if not less compared to this manual machine. With a little programming, raspberry pi with a microscope usb camera and some 3d printed parts, I think it's possible to replicate this machine.

A LitePlacer DIY kit is cheaper and is automated. NeoDen 220/240 are not much more expensive, and are fully automated. A used big, standalone PnP at liquidation auction usually ends up being sold at ~$5000. So this CaddySMT thing is completely overpriced to me.

And watching the video, the machine or the operator didn't seem to grasp 0201 and 01005 steady enough. I can place 0201 better with a pair of tweezers, albeit a good pair of Swiss tweezers, but a $30 pair of tweezers is still much cheaper than this. Also the laser is off-centered. My hands are much steadier with a pair of good tweezers, a really bright lamp and a good previous night sleeping with no coffee in the morning.

This "great product" places 0201 and 01005 worse than I can do it with a pair of decent tweezers. My pair of Lindstrom SS.SA is worth every penny, and despite the fragile nature of its tips, I have yet run out of my half dozen tweezers ordered 5 years ago.
