Smoking Cocaine Mixed with Human Bones: Basuco | High Society

Ойын-сауық

‘Basuco’ is now considered the cheapest drug in the world, at 30 cents a hit. It’s made from the residue leftover from cocaine production, mixed with brick dust, volcanic ash, sulphuric acid, kerosene and sometimes ground-up human bones.
The high is all-consuming and shockingly addictive, and an epidemic of basuco dependency is tearing through poor communities all across South America.
For the cartels, often the cheapest and deadliest drugs are the most profitable. In this episode, we meet the shadowy figures behind this epidemic and visit the neighbourhoods it has destroyed in its wake.
High Society
The War on Drugs has been won. By drugs. They’re everywhere.
Many of them are new, and they’re all more potent.
Society is altering chemicals, and chemicals are altering society back, creating new drug scenes - some funny, some bizarre, some terrifying.
Drugs on TV usually mean criminals getting busted or addicts in recovery. But this series is about the cultures and people that have grown around the substances.
High Society will show you how drugs are shaping our world.

Weed can also be very problematic. There is just one key to it all: "disciplined consumption". Beside the fact that drugs like Bascuo, Croc and all the other ultra cheap drugs are actually dangerous and toxic by their ingredients and are just a thing for insanely poor people in poor countries, every chemically pure drug could be theoretically consumed without problems. For example: Opioids like Codeine, Oxycodone, Morphine or even chemically 100% pure Heroin (Diacetylmorphine) are literally not dangerous for the human body, since their are not dangerous for the liver, like f.e. Paracetamol or other non-opiod analgesics, which can be toxic for the liver after weeks of consumption. Opioids are so dangerous because of their insanely high addiction factor. "Junkies" are also often so ill, because they can't afford the pure stuff like Oxycodone, get infected through the usage of dirty consumption tools (especially when i.v. consuming) and also a lot because of dangerous extenders in Heroin on the street. Also chemically pure Cocaine without dangerous extenders or any other similar drugs (MDMA etc.) could be consumed without problems. If someone would consume any of these drugs on the weekend just like someone smoking a blunt on a satureday evening to relax, he could do this his whole life without getting any problems by side effects or addiction. But, through the fact that it all is illegal and so stuff like Heroin and Cocaine is crazily cut, many people get addicted because they can't just buy a small amount in a drug store or pharmacy (like Weed). And as mentioned before they key to that is always disciplined consumption, since you only get addicted when you keep doing it every day. When you are addicted, different drugs have different characteristics on the human body. Mental addiction is always a big thing (Cocaine and similar stuff like Crystal and Amphetamines are probably the worst here) and also Weed can get you mentally addicted up to a very intense point, which then takes a lot of work to get rid of it. Some drugs even make you physically addicted, so you can't just stop even if you want to - and here are Opioids and Benzodiazepines the absolute worst, while Cocaine, Crystal and Amphetamines pretty much have 0% physically addiction potential.

Yes. Yes T.T I got that same feeling when I watch Colombian boys F donkeys video. Oh I was so grossed out I almost couldn't watch it. Ewww they even film a guy ploughing the donkey they are so confused. But I'm glad I know now if a Colombian woman comes near me will I see a beautiful Colombian woman or will I smell donkey on her. Its not her fault I know. But I can't bed with woman who bed with man who bed with beast. Its just far too much risk. Isn't it though. This is why I give up on women. I'm saving up my money for a life sized F doll. She will do. Get my mom to come clean up now and then and just live out my last years pounding the doll where my wife once slept. The woman who made me want a dolly instead. Its only right though. Isnt it. Isn't it. With an upgraded metal skeleton soft but durable parts and an easy pull out draw style cleaning system. Its very snazzy. You can just put her in the bath pull her big toe out and the cleaning pumps start up. You can see the whirl pool between her legs then you know its working.

One of my childhood friends that I've went through alot with is Colombian. We both started off toking starting off in middle school/ freshman year. Then other drugs came into the mix. Long story short. We ended up getting hooked on dope, along with a few other day one guys. It started to spiral out of control, quick...a few years after. I left the states and went over seas to visit some family for a few years so I can get clean. Haven't touched it since 2012 when I left. My Colombian buddy also left the states to go back so he can sober up. Went well for a few months, but he got consumed again. Really badly this time. Ended up living under some bridge doing dope and Basuco. He told me it was the hardest thing he had to overcome. He got saved by a family member that found him and took him back in. It's crazy seeing a documentary about this stuff. Even the bits of old lady puffing cheap cigars with all sorts of candles lit up with other chemicals in the back ground were spot on. Because his mother and some friends would do the dame exact thing 😅 He's back here now, married, with a kid and a business of his own. I'm back also. Clean, but still battling addiction with blow here n there. It's truly hard when you naturally have an addictive personality. Word of advise. Just stay away. None are good for you. Microdosing clean and reliable psychedelics here n there can be beneficial for you, that's about it. Anyways. Vice has always held it down with their drug documentaries. That would be the only reason I've been watching them for years. For those battling. Keep your head up!

I promise myself everyday, tomorrow I'll surely leave it all but then again we all know the "tomorrow" never comes. My family still think I'm living clean and I won't be able to bear if they find out again. Tears on your mum's face is the worst sight ever. Words cannot describe how much my heart breaks for everybody involved with this situation, specifically the addicts. It doesn't even sound like a fun drug, it's just something that creates an overwhelming compulsion to use again. No one should have to live in the conditions we saw in this video. It's inhumane, and I do hold the governments responsible for not taking better care of their people. I get that it's the drug dealers capitalizing off this government weakness, but if the government in these countries weren't so corrupt and broken, those people would have a much better life.

See that's the thing addiction isn't about it being fun anymore, it may start out that way but eventually your body craves that drug like you crave food. It becomes almost like a primal instinct, speaking from experience I was an addict at a very early age started using when I was maybe 12 or 13, quit cold turkey when I was 20. No rehab, no program no nothing just pure drive and isolation to keep myself clean. Been doing it since 2017, now it's 2022 and I'm still clean. It's not all rainbows and roses but it damn sure beats waking up sick every damn day. I'd never trade sobriety for anything and I urge anyone that's on drugs to please get sober. Not everyone can do it the way I did some people need help and it's okay to ask for it, your no lesser of a human because of an addiction. Get help, get clean, stay clean. Much love to everyone.

@@niara6 Folks with childhood trauma are amongst the toughest to treat. The trauma is deep and entrenched and if there's substance abuse, it encodes the trauma even deeper. The same brain that saved you as a child and allowed you to survive trauma, learns to expect trauma input and manufactures it when it doesn't get it's dose of trauma. I work in an inpatient psych ward and so many patients suffered childhood physical or sexual abuse. It's incredibly challenging for them to undo the neuronal connections because it's so deeply encoded with their first experience of life. It's like trying to unlearn reading. I know this because it has taken me a life time and lots of therapy to destroy old neuronal connections and form new ones in my brain not associated with self harm, toxicity or abuse. It's a tough row to hoe and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Superbly reported, love the discussion on harm reduction and the emphasis that environmental and cultural factors play a huge role in increasing or decreasing addiction. The complex and sustained trauma this group of ppl endure, over not just years, but decades has created so much internal (self) stigma that even when there is a path out, many feel they don't deserve it because 'addicts are bad people.' The hypervigilance associated with trauma, coupled with substance use to deal with the impact of that trauma, are a recipe for despair, hopelessness, and the need for at least a temporary escape from their reality. We see it here in America constantly too, but our "basuco" is meth. America has an addiction problem that frankly makes this Basuco epidemic look like child's play. Clearly what we've been doing for the past 60+ years has failed miserably and it's past time for a new approach. The Vice Reporter absolutely nailed what that new approach should look like. Thank you for a fair, balanced, informative, and excellently executed investigative report.

I am an addict... Thankfully only to Alcohol and nicotine... But also not thankfully... Being aware of who you are is part of life. I cut down my drinking a lot when my best friend died at 46... I lived the same lifestyle as him. I am 42... That was a serious lifechanging moment for me. I feel the main problem is the people who make money making people miserable by producing drugs that make them so dependant on being in a place they would rather be when in my experience, the happiest I have ever been is waking at 6am in Mallorca and going to the sea to swim. OK that is just me, I am not saying these drugs cannot make you feel invincible... But simply swimming in the sea made me think "I like waking up early, I like my morning walks, I am not going to enjoy sitting there all day like a zombie" I like documentaries like this as they not only tell the truth about what I refer to as the Human condition (I've never seen a Lion smoking) but they show the effects that these chemicals can have on life in general... I've seen me with a 4 day hangover... That was just from beer and wine...

Sorry for your loss, drinking is a challenging and a rough one, you are a person Who has a problem w/ alcohol I feel we need to affirm the positive not define the negative , I've lost 5 best friends and a my gf and bf also passed. Being dependent upon any substance or anything besides love, oxygen . Honestly I never understood why ppl like cocaine so much but it is very powerful on a mental level they don't call it the devils dandruff for no reason as well as alcohol was labeled as " spirits" also for a prominent reason as it attaches to Lowe energies and spirits can come into and channel through you when you are under the influence making one more subceptible to lust, desire , glurtoni, violence, etc. You might find yourself or acting like yourself or it's beyond just getting drunk u open your aura up to All kinds of spirits and energies. Eye can only imagine smoking bone and cocaine just add some DMT to it also ;) .... Now that's a crazy combo

Very well said against the end! "People who are given opportunities tend to not become addicts or criminals" I lived in Colombia for almost a year and my friends were constantly complaining about the government and how their corruption fuels poverty. If the greed of Colombias politicians was effectively viewed as a problem, much less people would suffer.

Addiction as a societal problem is much more complicated than we think it to be. There are addicts in all countries of the world, from all economic levels. Where the struggle is death or life is when it comes time to get clean. There, the availibity of resources can make a difference, although it's something for each individual to conquer. Rehab is slippery.

As much as I shouldn't judge current addicts, I find myself doing so, especially addicts in the US. There comes a point where you're at a point where YOU have to take action, or you will die. I grew up in a different kind of poverty. A kind that people in the US really have no idea about. Call it tough love, call it picking yourself up by your own bootstraps, no one will save you from your own addiction but yourself. There is no superman.

Money, success, and opportunity have absolutely nothing to do with addiction. Would you believe that once i had achieved what i felt was success in the ability to not have to work, doing whatever i felt was worth my time with the ability to afford it was the catalyst for my drug use? Once I realized that I had everything I had worked to achieve, yet I still felt unfulfilled, the next logical(very illogical) step was drugs in the hope that they would give me a feeling of being complete. I understand how poverty can drive a person to use substances but it is no better a reason than mine. I suppose that my story is just to always have something in your life you are working towards or you will go backwards, sometimes even further than the point you started

Let's try a little mental exercise, that might help you understand, not only how this possible, but how it probably happens more often, than not... Picture this; It's July 21st 1861. The nation is fractured, and in the midst of horrible turmoil. This being the result, of the outbreaks of hostilities, that have taken place, over the past month. As the result, of an attack upon Union Soldiers, at Fort Sumter, by the newly formed Confederacy. A young mother kneels, in a church pew, to pray for God's protection, over her two young boys. Who conscripted, marched with the morning sun, to reinforce a battalion, that's taken serious losses at Bull Run, and is about to be overrun... And although she's but a simple farmers wife, along the Appalachian trail, with little understanding of the goins on, in big cities, she's told by her boys superiors, that this battle is crucial, and most likely, there will be many casualties. Such is the fierceness, of the enemies conviction.. So she prays for their souls, she prays for their safety, and she prays for the chance, to see them come back home... Now this is the mental part. Who is this mother? Or, it could just as well, have been a father. Which one, is irrelevant. Where is she from? The Appalachian trail runs all the way to Maine, and starts in Georgia. So that's undetermined. Is she a supporter of the Union, or the Confederacy? And does that really make a difference, over whether she should, or shouldn't pray for her babies? Or ask the whole congregation to pray for them? It doesn't change the fact that they're still someone's baby's, that they're loved, and are all, children of God... I can assure you, mothers prayed for their sons in Germany, during WW2, on both sides of the conflict. And in nearly every war before, and after it.. It's all just a matter, of shifting your perspective. And understanding, that the devil is in the details...

I think addiction is a societal problem. We have to constantly and consistently offer people help, and if they fail, we have to try to help them again. Every day they spend in recovery is a day they're not hurting themselves or anyone else and you just have to hope it sticks. Every day is a struggle on planet Earth, I don't know why we glibly pretend otherwise. There's a million aspects of our world that make you want to escape and we need to just acknowledge that fact completely and go forward from there.

Sometimes the help is there, but the condescension you face is too much to bear. Even those who are involved in harm reduction are often up their own arses and preachy. As you say, we have to offer the hand again and again, but importantly it has to be done without the air of judgement. Making an addict depressed isn't going to help them quit. I feel an important place for recovered addicts is within the harm reduction realm, because they at least understand in part what someone is going through, and most of them know better than to be judgemental. But for the grace of God any of us could be needing those harm reduction and cessation services.

It really affects me because a part of my family is not with us anymore because of drug abuse,he choose the Dragon which means to stay with addiction.Thing is that no matter how much love ,care and compassion you give to your addict loved once they always find a way to hurt you deeply. I'm sorry ,I'm truly sorry for all the broken families suffering and still fighting for the lost cause. Don't get me wrong I don't blame anyone ,I'm sure that some things in life are hard to deal with and people choose to skip their problems ,want to feel no pain or just can't mix with reality well- there is always a reason. Love & peace to ya all Xxx Please choose your kids and family, that's what really matters in our short and beutiful life.

Unfortunately, those users will get desperate, and clean that pipe, ingesting all of those chemicals that have been cleaned out. Poverty is the real issue that needs to be addressed. don't get me wrong. the pipe WILL probably save some lives. that's all you can hope for sometimes, so I think it's a very good thing.

True, here in Brazil the actual residue in the crack pipe is worth money and considered the strongest high.

As someone more than a bit familiar with using and the parts of society involved with that, I can say that these people are off the chain. Scary

I don't know that having a job would help that much. When I was still an active addict, working maintenance at a apt complex, I'd go get my 1st few bags of crack around 830 am, & would smoke throughout the first part of the day, which I could get away with because my boss was an alcoholic & I was the only other employee with the company owners in a different state. But I'd be stopping many times in the day to take a hit. If this drug gives you such a minor buzz AND makes you paranoid & aggressive, I don't think you could maintain any actual job, even like my past situation. That's true for some other drugs as well, like opiates, meth, coke. You can be a high functioning addict, for a good while, but eventually you lose the job, & I did.

Opiates are different, that’s why they’re good and bad (the good being there are genuine reasons why people need these) - it’s the stigma associated because of the “opioid crisis” that stops prescribing which causes the problem. People can take opiates all day every day and (unless they get so high they’re falling asleep) can function and get on with life, it’s the withdrawals and time spent sourcing that ruins people’s lives. If they weren’t cut off by their doctors, and either maintained or tapered very gradually, on their own terms, most wouldn’t move on to street dope, and a lot of these are genuine pain patients.
