There are so many "experts" out there putting out BAD advice on typewriter maintenance, flooding the machines with water, using WD-40 as a lubricant, and calling a few minutes of work a "restoration". Thank you so much about this! I got myself a perfectly looking and working (well almost) Smith Corona 4S. One of its typebars wasn't resting and not only this was aesthetically ugly, but also that letter was not advancing the platen upon striking it due to touching it well before triggering the escapement. Thank you!

We've got my grandfather's 5TE electric that was used in his doctor's office. My daughter is working on cleaning it up, but a key link is bent. I'm guessing even though the model in this video isn't electric that we could use the same method to fix our bent links. My question is the tool you're using to unhook it just a rod with a little tiny hook end? Any other videos of yours that might be helpful in our journey cleaning wise? Hopefully its only issue is the bent links and oil buildup. 🤞

Very helpful videos Dwayne. I have a Silent that has a few keys that are sitting unevenly...though I am not brave enough yet to fix it myself. No problems with typing, letters have good alignment on the page. Okay to keep using for now, or should I take it right to my local shop for service? Otherwise, as you said, it has cleaned up really well so far, just A LOT of eraser shavings & needed a ribbon change out. Your platen removal video was key for me too! Thank you!

If you had left that second type bar alone, I'm wondering if that bend would show up in the feel of the key stroke? Or is pretty much any deviation that would only show below the level of the type rest irrelevant to the user?

Struggling here with a 1957 Tower president. It’s this typewriter. The keys on the left side of my keyboard are higher than the other keys. How do I adjust this? Driving me crazy 😂

I was able to remove the basket rest on my SMC Classic 12 but I am struggling to get it back in. Any tips? I cannot get all the type arms to swing forward like you did on this model to make easy re-entry like you did in this video.

You have to press each keytop to get type bar up, my hands are so big I'm able to press all keytops at same time. You'll just have to do a section at a time using a rubber band to hold them up like I did and just manipulate a few at a time into the rubber band
