Composer: Bedřich Smetana
Artists: Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, Theodore Kuchar (conductor)
Bedřich Smetana was a forerunner of the Nationalist music movement in 19th-century Czechoslovakia, and played a large part in developing the country’s musical identity. This disc comprises Smetana’s most renowned work, the inimitable Má vlast (My Homeland), a series of six tone poems - composed over five years - that depict different elements of the landscape of the composer’s native country. Vyšehrad, or The High Castle, is the first movement, based on the castle in Prague - the residence of early Czech kings. It opens with arpeggios played by a duo of harps, and later a military element is portrayed with the help of a march theme. The second movement Vltava (The Moldau), depicts the route of the river from the mountains to its end. Šárka, the third movement, explores the Czech folklore centred on the Bohemian Amazon maiden of the same name. This is followed by Z českých luhů a hájů (From Bohemia’s Meadows and Fields); a depiction of a beautiful landscape on a sunny day.
These first four movements were intended to complete the work, but after a gap of four years Smetana composed another two: Tábor, portraying the Hussite warriors who founded and defended the city of Tábor in 1420, and Blaník, named after the mountain in central Bohemia. This, the final movement, begins with the same driving rhythms as Tábor and later relents into a joyful hymn. It is easy to see how this work paved the way for Smetana to be heralded as one of Czechoslovakia’s greatest composers and patriots. The works are performed by the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Theodore Kuchar.

Jinak by snad nemohl něco takového stvořit. Letošní dvojí výroční Smetanovo je sice připomínáno, ale kdo to cíleně nehledá, ničeho si moc nevšimne. Chtělo by to, aby se o tomto výjimečném muži našeho umění a historie mluvilo mnohem výrazněji.

When I was about 8 in 1976 my uncle from Canada introduced me to "Vltava". I got to tknow this whole masterpiece in 1990 after the fall of the "iron curtain" when I bought an LP in Prague. I have loved this whole symphonic epic masterpiece all of my life and I do not gettired to listen to it.. Wonderful, a hymn about the beautiful and wild Bohemia. A classic. Fantastic.

Magnificent, I first heard Vltava when I was about 17 or 18 years old and though I knew nothing of classical music I knew I would love that piece forever. Forty years later my love has grown to include the entire Symphonic Poem with Vysehrad possibly , sometimes, edging ahead of Vltava in my esteem. Thank you for this beautiful rendition, I am grown young again in an hour.

@Jan Cimbálek You are a lucky man, I too love this piece of music and indeed the entire Ma Vlaast cycle - sometimes I even allow 'Vysehrad' to overtake 'Vltava' but only for a little time. I'm an Irishman and have visited your beautiful nation many times, I've travelled the Vltava from Praha to Slapy on the little river tour boat that runs on Saturdays and become ever more enthralled with the peace, beauty and wonder of 'the nature' in that magical valley. Truly never was a piece of music so well matched to it's inspiration- you can visualise the changing stream in every note and phrase. I'm sad that I haven't visited Czechia for a few years now, I hope to visit again before too long. Na shledanou Jan.

Do so, we need every tourist now. Visit other places than just Prague, make it worth your trip. Rent a bike and cycle the countryside to see castles, chateaux, monasteries, even old mines. Visit technical museum in Prague, to see the industrial revolution, from bikes to airplanes. The grim concentration camp Terezín, 18th century fortress Josefov, baroque city of Olomouc. And beer. You certainly missed that as a kid. Beer is cheaper than water in restaurants.

A few years back it was a tradition that on train stations throughout the Czech Republic, a snippets of the compositions from Czech composers would be played before the announcement of a train coming to the station. I absolutely loved traveling via the Prague Main Station, because they would play the beginning of Vyšehrad and it was just magnificent.. I have a feeling the ČD would play it before announcements in the train itself too, but I am not 100% sure about that, either way, I loved it absolutely.. Such a shame they stopped doing this.
