    The take up spool is nothing special - it it spool that can be found in any film canister. No need to spend money on ebay - Soviets made their cameras cheap in use :)

    @@MetalTrabant If you are going to shoot film, then there should be some film labs in your town. Or anyone else who uses and develops film. Just ask them for a used canister, they will probably give you a dozen of them.

    @@netolkofoto4419 Thanks, I could buy one for cheap locally in the meantime. Now I just don't know how far I can roll the film with the advance reel for the next shot on an older Smena 8 (not the 8M)? Will there be a click when to stop?

  • @netolkofoto4419

    @netolkofoto4419

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@MetalTrabant there should be a stop after you swipe through the advance wheel 3 or 4 "times" (one swipe of a finger usually makes about 1/2 turns of the wheel). If theres no stop, your counter mechanism needs reasseting. It's simplier than it sounds, but you'll need to take off the top cover of the camera anyway. I would higly recommend you to buy a reloadable canister (old plastic ORWO canisters are dirt cheap) and some used film to practice with loading and rewinding. Plus, you can load the whole canister instead of just a spool, so your film will be transported right into next canister and your frames wont be destroyed by light if the camera opens accidentally.

    6:53 Check the film speed table (ГОСТ/DIN/ASA/ISO). 250 ГОСТ equals something like 200 ISO. You can probably use any film speed you want if you have a light-meter. The fact that the camera was designed when slower films were widespread doesn't make you avoid using faster ones in it. The apertures and shutter speeds almost match those of a bigger Zenit E mirror camera (the Smena 8M doesn't have the 3,5 aperture and the 1/500 shutter speed). The Zenit E built-in light meter allows using 500 ГОСТ (smth like 400 ISO). The weather symbols of the Smena 8M or Smena Symbol are made for beginners to make their start easier. You can't have bright sun whole day so using faster films can be great where you don't have enough light.

It was my late uncle's camera, and after having it for quite some time, today is the first day l've actually used it! Coming from my autofocus Minolta, to this bare-boned simple camera it is a bit hard to get used to, but it's a lot of fun!

    I think you'll find that it will happily except any 35mm film above 400 asa, since it is pure mechanical, the only issue is that you can't take any photos if you loaded 1600 asa outside in bright conditions. Per example of course. But it is indeed advisable to load no faster films than 400asa because otherwise it'll be useless outside, or you'll be stuck with small apertures and fast speeds, which can be undesirable. Cheers Jelle

Around the shutter release button there is a ring. Press it down and rotate it anti-clockwise as much as possible. 3. Pull the rewind knob up and rotate clockwise to rewind :) I don't know why Zorki didn't mark the ring but that's how you activate the rewind knob.

    You don't have to deal with lomography. Just treat it like a regular film camera (even though it's made by LOMO) and it would be a great way to understand what photography is. It has variable aperture and shutter speed unlike cheap point-and-shoot cameras from the '90s. The whole "Smena" range was designed as affordable cameras for schoolkids or amateurs. The word "Смена" in this context means the younger generation that will replace the current one. Despite this fact these little cameras were very popular among Soviet professional journalists because they were small, lightweight and had almost all features of more professional cameras (setting the focus by scale wouldn't be a problem for a professional).
