📄𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
Parosmia is a change of the normal perception of odors. If the change is unpleasant, the condition is called as cacosmia.
For example, if you have cacosmia, you might experience the smell of coffee or fruit as garbage, rotten meat or eggs, or ammonia. Your favorite meals might become totally unappetizing or repellant. Some people with cacosmia find the smell and taste of food to be so bad that it even makes them sick.
Although it’s not a fatal condition, cacosmia is certainly a life-changer. And what’s more, there’s no no cure. The good news is that the symptoms can improve over time, especially if the cause, such as a respiratory infection or smoking, is treatable.
The main causes of cacosmia are upper respiratory infections, head injury, smoking, some chemical fumes, some medications and cancer treatments, sinus tumors, and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
COVID-19 infection might also cause a complete loss of smell called anosmia. It’s also possible to experience parosmia after having this viral infection. It’s thought that the virus makes changes to the olfactory system, and that the damage sustained may change the way you smell after recovery.
In one study a 28-year-old male reported smelling burnt rubber after recovering from COVID -19. This went on for 87 days after he first became ill. In another case, a 32-year-old female reported smelling onions for 72 days after getting sick.
Besides parosmia, cacosmia, and anosmia, there’s also hyperosmia, which is when people experience severe discomfort and even illness from certain smells. If people experience smells that aren’t actually present, this is a condition is called phantosmia.

@vanessaoboh5443 Whoever this Osman is, will not be able to treat hyperosmia. Loss of smell is an entirely different issue to high smell sensitivity.

@@amanangram1102 low dose olanzapine can work but risky if you have seizure history. That or a fan blowing at the smell or closing doors to room smells are in. I choose to eat away from bad smells.

I hate having hyperosmia. My sense of smell is so strong that I can actually pick up the smell of menstrual blood coming from other women. I can easily pass by some female on the street, and i can smell from over 1 meter away whether or not she is menstruating. This is even possible when I'm having my menstrual period. I really don't want this ability - it's disgusting.

I have cacosmia. I literally can’t eat 90% of foods anymore as they taste nothing like they’re meant to. Urine smells like aquafaba, onions smell like really intense body odour etc. My appetite is pretty much non existent.

You can also have this from having a deviated septum that causes 1 or both nostrils to constrict. I know someone who started smelling dust or stale air as cigarette smoke whenever the nasal constriction would switch sides and would start coughing at random times, claiming he could even taste it and feel the sensation of breathing/tasting ash and would have to block off the constricted nostril and shove his nose in a scented candle to get relief.
