Smartwater bottle holder by Justin Anderson

This week we take a look at one of the most asked about pieces of gear I have. This smartwater bottle holder changed my daily water intake and allowed me to access my water more easily. It's become a staple on all my packs because of the convenience and comfort. You can find these things in the Grizzle Gear group on Facebook.

Received my bottle holder from Justin. DAMN what a great ass deal. Justin is DA MAN. Might just order another pdq. Yeah buddy, I do fine myself drinking more water. And so much better to have Justin's holder rather than the elastic cord types -- w/ those you can't use Smart Water type bottles so that is another plus for Justin's bottle holder. Thanks again

Does this have any retention loops or anything to prevent the bottle from bouncing out?

  • @stuartsteele9984

By using one water bottle on one side of your body during motion. you are generating a differential side to side load shifting on your body particularly when moving at reasonable speed causing fatigue. Water is normally the heaviest individual item carried and best placed at the center of your spine, the center of torso rotation during motion as well as load bearing regardless of heavy load carrying normally greater than 20 lbs requiring hip belt load transfer which reduces about 25% of breathing but necessary to prevent load shifting. The typical backpack which you wear has five to eight bio-mechanical inefficiencies which limits you normal pace speed, endurance and comfort.

I have been carrying my water like this for THOUSANDS of miles. Fully loaded, with 4-5 days food and 2 ltrs of water, I am RARELY over 25 lbs. I don't even notice water "sloshing" as I walk. I often forget it's even there..I have never been a fan of carrying water in a bladder inside my pack(which is the only way you can get it "against your spine" as you say). Bladders get slimy and disgusting pretty quickly, it's a pain to get in and out of the pack to refill, and you never know how much is left in a bladder because you can't see it. Plus a big bladder is just unnecessary weight. The smart water bottle only weighs 1.3 oz. I appreciate you analyzing my water carrying techniques, but I think you overanalyzed things a little bit. It is in no way uncomfortable, and extremely convenient. It doesn't affect my pace, and I stay hydrated.

@@GrizzleGear I have the sentiments regarding bladders as described in my THE INEFFICIENT BACKPACK, document which I would be pleased to email you. I describe eight bio-mechanical inefficiencies of the backpack. My patented hiking pack and patent pending running pack eliminate the inefficiencies of backpacks. My one or 1-1/2 liter Smartwater bottle or equal is located in a mesh hydration sack at the center of my spine, similar to what you are using, Please note that runners and fastpackers that wear vestpacks carry two, not one water bottle in front off-center of their chest center. Again, the center of the spine and therefore the center of the chest is where it is practical to minimize thrusting . Two versus one bottle balancing side to side thrusting is your better solution to eliminate a chiropractor - jesting. By placing a one or 1-1/2 liter hydration bottle at the center of my spine as you could do inside your pack and optionally add tubing and bite valve to "drink on the go" as I do to eliminate having to stop, takeoff your pack, open it, possibly having to search for it and then take a drink. With my packs I'm able to access the majority of my gear without the necessity of having to take it off with the hydration bottle at the center of my spine. All the best Grizzle Gear

@@stuartsteele9984 You can email me at grizzlegear@gmail.com. I'll take a look at what you have, but I don't see myself changing my current system anytime soon. I am extremely pleased with it as I've already stated. I'm not a fan of drinking out of any type of tubing. I'm not a fan of bite valves either. I have tried them in the past. I find that on a 4 to 6 month through hike, tubing and bite valves are impossible to keep clean, and just a major hassle. I much prefer a bottle I can drink from while I am walking. I always know how much water I have left, and it's easy enough to just swap the bottle out when it gets dirty. 1 l of water weighs 2.2 lb. I keep one bottle on my left shoulder strap, and keep another one liter bottle in my right side pocket. To evenly distribute weight, I adjust my straps. It's not that tough to even out. I don't know how much weight you carry on your hikes, but I am rarely over 25 lb fully loaded, and I often run down trails. I have no discomfort, and really dig my system. Send me that email though, and I'll have a look. For now though, after over 6,000 mi of hiking in the past several years, I'm fairly certain I have my gear dialed in. I'm happy with it. Thanks for your comments, and for watching my videos!

Shoots good eye on the mittens! To be honest with you, they weren't even mine! My hands were freezing that morning and I think f-word may have lent them to me for the climb. Somebody did. But those were some kind of gloves where your fingertips were bare, but you could flip a mitten top over to cover your fingertips. I have no clue what brand they were because I borrowed them lol. I now use possum down gloves, and if it's pouring down rain or if there's snow and I want to keep them dry, I slide on a pair of rubberized showa 281 gloves.

@@GrizzleGear maybe a video on keeping your toes and fingers warm would be appropriate in both cold and wet conditions. As a mountain climber I need something that is durable in the palm and fingers as the rocks can be very abrasive. As a thru hiker maybe your needs are different. I’ve got a decent , durable glove for bouldering but I’m looking for a mitten that is durable, warm, light weight, and waterproof. Any suggestions are appreciated!

In my experience they're a pain in the butt. They inevitably get disgusting, and with all the expensive down gear I own, the last thing I want to do is put a big bag of water in my pack with it. Also, I've never found a bite valve that doesn't taste like plastic. Also, you have no idea how much water you have remaining when your water is buried in your pack. They're just not for me. Some people love them!
