Miyagi's DIY Smart Water Bottle Hack

*2019 UPDATE INFO BELOW*
In this video I show you how to hack the "Source Convertube" kit for use with a 700ml Smart Water bottle. This hack allows for very convenient consumption of your water in the backcountry as you make your way along the trail.
Coming in at just 1 ounce, the finished project weighs just about the same as half of a Snickers candy bar. Get all the benefits of a water bladder system without the added weight! No more cap flippin & tippin....just gently bite the tip of the mouthpiece and bam....instant mountain spring water.
Unfortunately the Source Convertube System is no longer available on Amazon but can be purchased directly from their website. I've recently sourced some alternatives I've found on Amazon that are just as good.
** NOV. 2019 UPDATE **
I've found a cheaper alternative to the Source Brand. Check out the "Lixada Water Bottle System"
Currently on Amazon for $12.99
Find the Lixada system here - amzn.to/36kDcCp
ACCESSORY LINKS
F Flammi Water Bottle Ring Holder - amzn.to/324GEhj
Garage Seoul Water Bottle Clip - amzn.to/2Ww9VQV
Osprey Packs Hydraulics Bite Valve - amzn.to/2qd2NMW
SOME OF THE BENEFITS
- super easy consumption of your favorite trail beverage
- you do not need to remove your bottle to drink
- mouthpiece swivels 360 degrees, simply turn your head and drink
- saves on your shoulder by not having to reach back to a pocket
- gauge your consumption, you can always see how much you have
- counter balance your backpack, move some weight to the front
- no bladders to fail inside your pack
- lightweight at only one ounce!

I like this option. Bladder bags can be punctured and a water bottle is easier to wash out since it is transparent. Not everybody can or wants to buy specific types of gear. Maybe I come across as "old school", but I have no problem and actually like using canteens and bottles.

This is a great idea and I will be switching over to it. I really have no desire to use a water bladder inside my pack. I can see one possible problem ( No one has mentioned in the remarks ) that require some caution. It's due to new hygiene thoughts on the trail. Mistakes do happen. I'm remembering one camper that mistook his Prep H for toothpaste at night. Don't get the water bottles confused if you are also using a Bidet.

I had problems with the zpacks clip popping out. The rubber bit kept falling off and I think I've lost it at this point. However, I think with some elastic shock cord holding the bottom its less likely to be an issue.

  • @MiyagiontheTrail

    @MiyagiontheTrail

    5 жыл бұрын

Hi Jeff! Thanks for commenting. The system was originally designed for putting your water bottle in your packs side pocket as you describe. The extra long hose it comes with can be routed a number of different ways on your pack and comes with different adapters for different size bottles. I wanted to counterbalance my pack, not strain my shoulders retrieving my water each time, be able to see the level of my remaining water and having the ability to refill the bottles quickly. The slight modifications, additions and placement allow me to achieve all of these. The “inner” tube will work no problem with a one liter smart water bottle. I cut mine down to accommodate the smaller bottle I use. Hope this helps! Cheers ~ Miyagi

I carried a smart water bottle for about 2 months. Then, it suddenly tasted as if I were drinking from a new water hose. I discarded and purchased another. 6 weeks, same issue. Rubbery/plastic taste. I only used purified water and from different sources. I experimented carefully to make sure it was not from some other source. In doing some research, I am learning that these bottles are like any other water bottle and meant for one time use and then discarded and that, in time, the plastic begins to break down. I am looking for information here. Being a minimalist, I love these bottles

Frank Michael Adams You are right. Mmost hikers are going to have at least 2 containers, even a cooking pot. So, first filter out a liter of water and transfer back to back flush. Longer trail hikers would be using this method when in town, and utilizing tap water from hostel, hostel, etc.

It’s not so much the water as it is the bottle itself. The bottle material is robust enough to survive on the trail but significantly lighter than a Nalgene bottle. The thread pattern also fits the ever popular “Sawyer Squeeze” water filter. The 750ml bottle seems to also fit nicely in most backpack side pockets and specialty made front pockets. They’re definitely not the end-all and be-all solution for everyone....just the most popular right now. Fist bumps ~ Miyagi
