Small Size...HUGE Let Down? The New "38mm" Casio Duro MDV-10 Is...

In this Casio Duro 38mm review video, I look at the MDV-10 diver, also known as the new Casio Duro 36mm, as there is some sizing inconsistency! The particular version I have here is the Casio MDV-10D-1A2VDF. This is a smaller version of the ever-popular MDV-106 and MDV-107 dive watches, but does it live up to their reputation? Let's find out.

Water resistance aside, it does fit Ben’s wrist really well. Looks pretty good.
I’m a big guy, so I literally have every Duro except the one with gold accents because they’re just too good for $50-$70. I can’t believe that these are the changes that they made; MAKE IT EXACTLY THE SAME BUT WITH A SOLAR MOVEMENT, AND MAKE A 40MM OPTION ALONGSIDE IT. Please, don’t even attempt to put your “steel” bracelet on it lol Long Island Watch has incredible bracelet options made specifically for the Duro and I love them. Come on Casio just listen to your fans.

It always amazed me that the original Duro was the perfect cheap dive watch even someone like Bill Gates is wearing. Easy marketing. Casio simply had to downsize it with identical or better specs and it would have been an instant win. What were they thinking.

A lot of people don't like it, but I do; I never picked up a Duro because it was too big for my thin wrists, but this will fit nicely. And the 50m water resistance is not an issue for me; I have enough divers in my collection if I ever wanted to swim with a watch, which I never have.

Same for me. A 44mm watch would look gigantic on my tiny wrist. Also, I have never swum with any of my watches, so...

36mm is bang on for my teeny tiny wrists. That bracelet does look very slender, but I don't think it looks that off when you wear it. But I'm sure it will rub loads of people the wrong way. WR50 is a real pity, too, even for a desk diver

What's particularly weird about this false-small-Duro is that in comparison, Citizen recently managed to scale-down a 44mm diver to a 37mm case without any loss in capability and aesthetics - and it's arguably more complex than a Duro, being a professional solar diver. Why Casio failed at properly scaling-down the Duro is a mystery. It's not even female-focused - unlike the Citizen 37mm it doesn't have a more feminine colourway like a bling pink with gold.

I was planning to buy a 36mm Tissot Seastar since my wrists are tiny, but I was surprised at how small it looked and felt compared to my 37mm watches. I guess that's just the diver style. I ended up with a 40mm Seastar and love it. Maybe the quartz 36mm would be a good affordable alternative for those looking at this!
I'm happy they produced a small wrist size diver's model. This watch is probably not gonna look too big on my small wrist (17cm). I might buy it as I like a blue face and a rubber strap. This model is also available with rubber straps. Currently I have a Casio G-2900--the only small G-Shock that looks stylish and not oversized. I also have one quartz Longines and a very, very old quartz Raymond Weil (30 years old)--both work like new despite Raymond having a lot of wear and tear over the 30 years. I got only quartz movements because I don't like my watches to break down, show wrong time or require disassembling and oiling every 4-5 years. The worst thing that happened to me is once I had an automatic watch (mechanical) and it stopped down and then moved again, although I thought it had a lot of reserve as I was working out a lot. The upshot: I got late by more than one freaking hour without realizing that! That was 25 years ago but I still remember. I didn't have a mobile phone 25 years ago--I know it's my fault for postponing buying one--but I grew to hate automatic watches anyway. I won't be bothered with overnight winders for automatic watches either. What a nuisance! They should offer people manual watches too. I hate those automatic watches. Why didn't I wear my Raymond Weil that day? Well, it's a costume watch and I was going to my boxing practice and I bought a more brutal looking automatic watch. It really let me down. After that I was wearing my quartz Raymond Weil only--wherever I went and whatever I did, even at home. *Quartz watches are the way to go!* Just an opinion.
When you were talking about it being smaller than 40mm, i was okay with it bcs i like it better 38 or 36 anyways. But 16mm lug width? 50m WR? What were they thinking?
Really enjoying these more frequent uploads
Hi ben, love your channel. I came across it a couple of months ago and let me tell you, you have sparked the love for watches inside me. I have a question. Is it only for me but why every time you put an amazon screenshot its always blured. Do you edit your videos like this or is there a censorship going on?
I kinda feel the size is fine, since that’s so personal. Some folks will want a smaller or larger version of any watch, and I’m sure this size is right for a lot of folks, if not for me. And Casio always measures width including the crown, rather than diameter. But not being even 100m WR is really disappointing. A big reason to love the Duro is the legit dive specs for the price. This just doesn’t do it. Like Casio presumed that folks with smaller wrists don’t want to go snorkeling or whatever, and that’s uncool.
I bought this one and I like the smaller dial, the small dial is spot on, I think it's a beauty, got a blue dial and enjoying it
The main selling point of the duro is it's 200m wr. It isn't a super pretty watch to remain desirable without it's water capabilities. The smaller duro or should i say the smaller duro's cousin is already out there for years now and it's called casio mtd 1053d. 41mm case, a better looking dial if you ask me but a little worst case finishing but not by much. I have it on a nato and it accompanies me to my snorkelling for two years now, over 70 swims per summer without breaking a sweat. Honestly i am surprised any of the "big" watch reviewing channels haven't payed tribute to it with a full video as it costs 50 euros here instead of 70 of the duro, with the same capabilities, movement and specs and with 41mm it wears better than it's famous cousin.
I was excited for this when I heard about it so it's a shame it comes up short in so many respects. Anyone interested in a smaller, affordable quartz diver should honestly look at the 37.5mm Invicta Pro Diver. $50 and if you get the OB version, a screw down crown with 200m WR.
I considered getting a duro, as a watch to wear around water but decided on a Vostok amphibia instead. 40mm size is much more wearable and has more history around it

Cracking review, thanks for the heads up about the size. I was about to crack the joke to ask what a "yurr" and a "bodget" is, but thought the better of it. I will posit that the Japanese don't have smaller wrists per se. :)

Reminds me of the "mini" smartphone days that had half the specs its bigger brother. Until companies like Sony made a real "mini" with relatively similar specs as the original. With this, casio is reminding me of 2013 mini smartphones.
To me, Casio blew it with the 16mm lug width. Fine for a lady's watch. I don't mind 36mm, but I think it's very dishonest of Casio to bill it as a 38mm. And 50m WR? Come on, Casio! Even the all-plastic MRW200 has 100M! BTW, those Casio bracelet links are actually really easy to remove, just use a push-pin tack to push out the U link.
Excellent, I already have my Christmas gift, this new 38 mm MDV-10-1A1V model will replace my old 38 mm color blue MQ-553W that I have had since I was 13 years old 30 years ago, they are almost the same... but not yet I see it available for purchase on the Casio site... when will it go on sale?
What's the difference between ion plated watches and stainless steel ??
Great video. I tried the original Duro and it was unwearable. The major selling point of this is that... I can wear it and it will look good! Plus it's really cheap 😊 I don't dive and it'll be fine for swimming. Even 60 clicks is fine for pasta timing 😉
So have you get it replaced?
Good review Billy
Love it! Tbh glad its that small, classic
Could have been iconic, instead it's disastrous. You'd hope Casio will take the L, go back to the drawing board, make a version that's actually 38mm, has a screw down caseback and crown, and maybe has the Marlin/Sailfish reprise its place on the dial and caseback. Would show Casio care about enthusiasts. Otherwise this could damage their standing.

It seems Casio is failing to meet the enthusiasts in the budget segment. Their digital releases are fine but their recent budget analog watches are questionable. I'm so spoiled by Chinese brands that give you full solid bracelets and sapphire crystals for under 100 dollars.
Is this watch available for purchase in the USA?
It seems you got the 50mm Water resistance variant. I ordered the Pepsi dial stainless steel bracelet of the Duro in the official Casio store here and it comes with 200mm water resistance. It's dimensions are in 49.5 x 44.2 x 12.1mm
So its same like casio mq24 in size?
The 200meter ones were sold out and I almost bought the 50m ones. Until my girl came through and got me the Batman 200 meter one. So glad she didnt low ball for this one.
I have a Casio Duro Marlin MDV-106 (the one with the marlin logo) and it has been really strong on all terrains for the last 3 years. I'm still waiting for Casio to launch a new Casio Duro product in a smaller size (baby duro) with the 200 meter WR feature.
perhaps good news for people with smaller wrists its a good news? i like my bigger dial though
In my opinion, it's a very nice one. It looks like Rolex 'batman', I don't think the size would be painfully small, smaller watches are more comfortable.
I have no idea of why they didn't even try to change the fish to something else

DURO means tough in Portuguese... if people are wondering..
I was thinking the price range would be down around what you would pay for the average Timex Expedition style watch.
Maybe a good starter watch for a young watch enthusiast? Certainly not for my wrist.
Looking good, I hope they'll make a plastic version that's lighter with plastic band; maybe I'll replace Casio MQ-71. 50 m water resistance is a lot. I hope they will be able to sell it and fix quality and supply issues. They can't even make Casio LF20W.
Casio measures the width including the crown, that's why it's 38,5mm. Like the Casio sapphire MTS-100 series, they say it's 41,3mm wide but it's 40mm actually

I thought it looked nice on your wrist. Not so big and braggy as a lot of popular watches. Kind of like a less is more type of look, but still looking good. I know I would have liked to see it released a little bit bigger dimensions but it really didn't look that bad on your wrist. Stay safe . Cheers.😊
Re the hoodies the same quality of scametti watches? That is to say, revolutionary
I would like this one because of the size...but man, that fatality at the end is bummer.
Casio seems to have gone the way is Seiko and the SKX007 by down grading it to a non screw down crown etc…
I’ve already seen a review of this junker on Just One More Watch. And concluded there, that this is basically a watch aimed at kids that maybe want a cheap faux diver that looks like their dad’s real one or something. I can’t really see any other market for this thing 🤷♂️
Miyota movement? YIKES! I have several dirt cheap Seiko/Hattori PC21(x) movements, going back as far as the a version (over 20 years old for sure), and they all run at up to way over 20 years old, and the newest at about 1-1/2 years! These movements can be had for around under 2 dollars! Both of my Citizen watches with their Miyotas, that were until recently some of my most expensive watches, just quit after a few years, and being elegant dress watches, they most certainly were treated very gently. The only one that had cost more than the more expensive Citizen (USD 169 in Dec 1988, that was a LOT of money for me then) was a Skagen with a (OOOHHH!) Swiss movement, which was supposed to be the best .... lasted a little over one year. I had another Swiss movement once that was so quirky, I returned it, and went straight back to cheap Japanese movements, that work, keep time (what a watch is for) and LAST for years and years and years and ... My best watches are the cheapest ones with the cheapest movements, long lasting, ACCURATE (the more I spent, the lousier they kept time), and some are just awesomely pretty and do not have any big scratches :)
Bought the original Duro, love it but too big and eished there was a smaller Duro and I got that wish. I knock and he answers
The 38.5 is case diameter plus crown. Casio doesn’t specify case diameter, they measure right across the watch in that direction

This really reminds me of when the skx got neutered. Bummer. They'd of made a ton of people happy with an actual 38.5 and kept the screw down crown and back.
Actually, not completely mad at the new smaller Duro, now the tiny wrist group and enjoy it too. Also, now kids can have a watch like their dad, etc.

this is for the Duro fanatic the one that dives with a duro and then wants to wear it still but its a little bit too big for their fit…this is for them the post dive duro enthusiast 😂
I feel like they missed a great opportunity here and I'm afraid it won't be easy to acknowledge a failure and get an improved version.
I think it's a good-looking watch. However, you lost me when you pointed out the snap on case back and the lack of screw on crown. I have small wrists so the watch size is ok for me. Casio has cut too many corners for me to be interested in this watch.
I have a pepsi Duro and I love this watch. So does my friend, who owns even Omegas and JLCs, but would still have a Duro, if only his wrist wasn't too small. Now this could be a nice watch for him, if only it wasn't rubbish 😒 Shame on you, Casio!
I've got to say, I think there's a shift going on at Casio and it's (in my opinion) not for the better. Why, for love or money, would they take an iconic cult classic like the Duro, under spec it and shrink it? Why wouldn't they introduce an updated (improved) version of the original? This isn't an isolated incident either. I own two of the Edifice EFV100D in blue and white, which are fantastic watches and great value. I decided to buy, in green, the newer EFV140D, and while it's a really nice watch (in isolation) I was taken aback that it has neither a screw down crown or screw down case back (just like the baby Duro) and it's more expensive than the 100. Is it just me...?🤔

If Casio had simply made a 40mm Duro with the same specs as the 44mm version, and then thrown in a sapphire crystal, they would have created a legend. They could have doubled the price, and they couldn't build them fast enough. But instead they created a too small Duro with lower specs, so now they have a dud on their hands. What were they thinking?
