Watch manufacturers, Seiko included don't think we are stupid. They KNOW we are. For the last five years they have been churning out watches that were overpriced without offering nothing to justify the price increase and have mostly got away with it. So, they have every reason to consider us as ...not very bright.

And they often are smaller brands, so if Seiko would go about it, at the scale they operate they could easily keep the costs down and put sapphire in for maybe a 20$ markup. That would justify the total price a lot more than being 20$ less and having softlex... Don't take my word for it, I've heard this narrative from several Seiko AD's who try to have the Seiko agent feed this back to Seiko Japan in hopes to change one or two things.

While I mostly agree with many points, it really is unrealistic to expect the sort of prices we paid grey for the old Seiko 5s in today’s day and age. We were happy to pay $120 for an old SNXS on a grey market dealer but what were we really getting? A terribly outdated movement that couldn’t be handwound nor hacked, a godawful bracelet that made its way to the bin 10 seconds after peeling the stickers, basically no warranty to speak of and a mismatched case and bracelet. And we were happy to part with that money! Of course the retail price on these new releases is excessive, they are just released after all, but the watch has been improved and this has a cost, especially when taking into account warranties, which is something that tends to fall by the wayside when reviewing watches. Mark’s video on the issue was a real eye opener.

And now, you can spend three fiddy hundred pounds for a watch with a terribly outdated movement, a godawful bracelet that will make its way to the bin ten minutes after peeling the stickers, a pitiful warranty (the only good thing about the nh3X movement is that you don't need a warranty, but still) and a mismateched case and bracelet. Add a dive style bezel to add a little bit of randomness with the alignment and you got yourself a DEAL

Seiko's present such poor value for money in the modern watch market, it's unreal. I think a lot of people in this space have completely forgotten what made them so appealling in the first place: 1) They were cheap. 2) They were decent quality. We've now reached a point where Chinese watches can be had for way under 100 quid with comparable case finishing to a Seiko in the 200 or even 300 range, and if you're willing to spend the same amount of money as you would on one of these Seiko's, you could get something way more interesting with a better movement and finishing from any number of microbrands. They're good watches, but they just don't make sense anymore from a value POV and I don't get why people keep buying them these days.

Ohhh ya thats why you can go to any mod site and get a sapphire crystal for $20-$40 or even cheaper of shopped over sea. My girlfriends dad bought me the older SNXS in grey a while back and it quickly became my favourite watch despite the poor water resistance and lack of hacking and hand-winding. After seeing these new models in person it felt underwhelming almost. For over £300 I would've expected a lot more. The value to be had with the older models is still by far the best selling point for me, They're stylish, versatile, and easily repairable. Something about the new design just doesn't click for me. If I had to get a similar styled watch I'd probably go for the Erebus Ascent, it's a spec monster and just looks amazing with its dial variations.

With its 7s26, rudimentary case finishing and agricultural folded bracelet it absolutely doesn't hold a candle to the new model. Still, at a price that seems to be a bit lower than even the old model, it could be a decent pick for the price, especially if the case doesn't float above the wrist. Yup. You buy them, wear them, run the movement into the ground and then simply buy a new cheap watch 10 or 15 years later. That is why these price increases don't make sense (apart from inflation). They're not quality watches. And people pretend like there is this huge difference between 7s and 4R movements but at the same time deny that there is a huge difference between mineral and sapphire. All while Seiko are refusing to fit them with good bracelets which they can easily source from China where they already do most of their production anyway. Nothing can make a watch worth it's price or more like a proper bracelet. Solid links, screws, quick release, milled clasp and on the fly adjustment. And they are dirt cheap in China.

The original I have put on a jubilee style bracelet with solid links and screw pins. The polished centre links match the case better and it has a milled Rolex style clasp. I paid only the Aussie equivalent of £210 for the new one, so I think for the upgrades and different vibe being black dial with those cream accents, it was a good deal. Glad you pointed out the triple naming on the website, it actually feels out of touch as I think it's the same group they try to approach with these names. I do not know where the price is going to land however I still think anything between 250-300eu there would be a market by value on just realistically adding inflation / the movement / the case. I'm just more in for that action from Citizen right now having two great small second everyday options out there (Tsuyosa small seconds & the new titanium small seconds) About your wife, assume it's the faux patina markers. Generally when people like a watch yet can't describe why, its the beige from the patina or a well finished watch (you just don't know how crisp metal can be before you see it with your own eyes), some assumptions here but where would we be without them! Thanks Ben!

I must admit I actually like the newer one much more. It looks way less homagey, has its own vintage unique vibe, and has a more proportional case. Even the newer Seiko 5 logo is better. It’s both vintage and modern, whereas the old one just looks incredibly dated. Overall, it just looks much better than the old one. And the kanji date wheel is such a cool addition. Yeah, it might be pricey and not have sapphire, but it deffo looks cooler and more well made imo. And it now hacks, has better WR, and a better movement. I think people are just getting caught in the current ‘bash Seiko’ trend.

If vloggers didn't hype up the brand the last 15 years we'd still be enjoying ISO certified 200M SKX divers at $150 a pop. Back then people suggested Seiko underpriced their watches. Now that Seiko jacked it up, people still complain their watches to be overpriced. Be careful what you wish for.

Bought the black version and it is better in everyway than the model it replaces (except one) and personally love the way it looks and fits. The price should start with a 2 not a 3 but the biggest gripe I have is the accuracy of the movement. It runs 20 seconds slow per day as does my Seiko Save the Ocean Turtle which simply isn't good enough. My old Seikos always run fast but by no more than 11 seconds per day including 7S26's . Put simply, if you really like it, get one at a discounted price but there are many other brands out there offering more for less with greater accuracy. Have you seen Seiko's new "Pogue"...£600 and for me other than the colours looks nothing like one, now that really is taking the Michael😮

These watches hit the Australian market at $625. I bought the blue one for $440. They really are a great watch and the quality is great. I don’t have a problem with Hardlex, but that’s because I’m not hard on my watches. I’ve scratched mineral, and I’ve chipped sapphire but I’ve never damaged Hardlex. If you’re on the fence, just get one, you won’t regret it.

I think it looks great. And it is a sub 38mm. The comparison should not be the old price but rather what you have to pay elsewhere. Any other brand big or micro charges way more for vintage look, feel and sizing. Exceptions are Islander and Ali Express. Islanders become pricey when you ship them to Europe and Ali Express is a world I'm not interested in. In that competition clear win for Seiko.

You're right but most watch companies are ramping up the prices above inflation, just compare the price of the new Aqua Terra with a few years ago. I don't like it but unless the public stop paying the inflated prices it's not going to stop. After all Seiko isn't in the business of making watches they are there to make money. My SNKS77 (new) was less than a tenth of the current new price leaving plenty to change the bracelet for a jubilee style and put in double domed sapphire with ar, looks fabulous. I have a SNZH55K1 too, as standard its better than the new one. In my experience the 7s26/36 is more consistent than the nh35, so I'm just missing out on hacking which I can live with. Lack of hand winding is not a problem on a decent automatic.

Hmm, I have full confidence in Seiko!❤ And if they need to increase the price then I guess that it is really something they need to do.. Let me explain my view point: That is making me worried about the world currency and inflation issues instead than Seiko is milking us! That we have a big issue with our fiat currencies that is soon not worth anything. So I think that the greater issue is not Seiko it is more our currency that spirals down and is diminishing in value!😢 Or in another way to say it: If Seiko were priced in Bitcoin (satoshis) currency instead. Then for example then we would have a price cut (!) in the price tag of the amount of Bitcoin that the watch costs from Seiko! When Bitcoin value goes up and less is needed to buy the same watch and Seiko still get what they need..😅 The totally opposite to what is happening to fiat currency that by default ALWAYS go down in value more or less speed that is called inflation and faster decline is hyper inflation..😢

To be fair over the last few years, I've leaned more towards microbrands using Seiko movements than towards affordable Seiko models. The microbrands use similar movements, but the rest of the specs are usually better and they are cheaper! Nicer dials, better bracelets, sapphire crystals, etc... I'm not precious about the brand name. Give me the nicer watch with the better spec.

On the face of it, people will pay regardless, its nice overall, it LOOKS like they did a bit of work considering the case is slimmer, but man, they deliberately dont put sapphire on these to screw you over, imagine if it was £400 with sapphire, simply more sales will happen because with watches, when someone wants it, they want it. As for myself, i would like it, but just if i dont feel like i get a complete package relative to the price, im less inclined to get it at all.

This is kinda ridiculous honestly. Looking at US amazon right now, the SRPK87 is 300 USD. The same price that I paid for my SNJ025 'Arnie' 18 months ago. Admittedly the prices on those have also gone up, but when I went to check the Arnie pricing, in the second row down you have a Citizen Promaster Eco-Drive for 200 USD. Heimdallr and Steeldive continue to make better Seikos for the money than actual Seiko does in terms of their classic dive watches, it seems.

  • @d3xmeister

Please, Heimdallr and Steeldive are way worse than any Seiko I had. I have both. The cases are finished with an axe, the sapphire crystals are of the worst wuality poasible (transmission), the crown, bezels, everything that moves makes a grinding noise, and all kind of little “touches” that just scream “cheap Chinese clones here !” I have a Turtle Steeldive because I wanted to use its case for a mod (seemed rounder than other cases which I liked) and the Heimdallr is a MM300 homage made from Titanium that I also wanted to mod. Both were to poor quality to use their parts)

So close, so far. A few odd design choices, plus a price out of line with other contemporary Seiko 5s. I know there are lots of price comparisons to the original SNXS, those feel off to me. The SNXS had a Casio-tier bracelet (which is fine on a $20 a158), forgettable case finishing, and a humdrum movement. I think the new one clearly has a lot of advantages, and mostly feels like an absurd comparison. The cheapness of the old 5s is part of their charm, like the perfection of a watch you'd get in a gumball machine. I personally wouldn't compare a basic resin WalMart Casio to an Edifice, and so it doesn't feel right comparing the SNXS to the SRPK. Where the price comparisons for this watch hit hardest are against other contemporary Seiko 5s. Stacked up against an SRPG/SRPJ field watch or SRPE DressKX, the $395 for the SRPK vs the ~$230 from ADs for the other 5s with similar movements, finishing, and bracelets feels pretty bad. The fact that this is at MSRP still while other contemporary 5s are about 25% off MSRP, combined with a higher MSRP of $395 vs $295... that doesn't feel great. If that gap was closed somewhat, well, that'd be nice. And personally, I do dislike this watch for what it is. Case and bracelet seem decent, the dial being enamel vs sunburst is a tossup, but a lot of the other design choices bug me. The fauxtina really irks me. The fact that the chapter ring has so much contrast is particularly bothersome. And the orange seconds hand just seems off. If the hand was red on the black/cream models, blue or silver here, with normal white loom, and either a color-matched or silver chapter ring, I think I'd really like the SRPK. It's close to being something I'd like. As is, the cream dial one looks decent because the contrasting chapter ring is black, and it fits in better, but I still dislike the loom and seconds hand.
