    I was switching from a 25 and a 9.9 for a year due to the same hp restrictions but even though they're tillers its still a collosal pain in the ass. Suzuki sells the 9.9 that has the same displacemwnt and powerhead as their 20hp its literally 2 parts to increase fuel and air. Due to civil nobody has been able to get their hands on these. I just pit the bullet and put a 15hp mercury and invested in some 9.9 stickers. My boat is 16'

    Nice boat!!! Why the need to swap out motors? I have a 16.5 ft Alumacraft tiller with 3 motors on the transom - a 50 hp Mercury 4-stroke 4 cylinder tiller as main power; a Mercury 6 hp 4-stroke tiller to the left of it for use in lakes limited to 9.9 hp; and a Torqeedo tiller electric motor (integrated lithium battery) to the right of the 50 hp for electric only lakes and for slow trolling. Works for me.

    Yes we do that up north big motor for main power then a kicker on the side for trolling usually a 9.9 to 15.

  • @vernshein5430
    @vernshein54303 жыл бұрын

    I have a 14' Lund SSV with a 20" transom. I powered it with a 25HP Mercury with trim. On the port side of the transom I have a 5HP Mercury Sail for trolling and backup. I have the two outboards steering linked so I can steer with the main while the kicker is doing the work. Both are fueled from the external gas tank and I have cut off valves so I can run the kicker from its internal gas tank if I need to. Both outboards have alternators (that's why I chose the Sail O/B for my kicker) so that my battery is being charged even when I'm trolling with the kicker. On the starboard side of the transom I have a folding, trelescoping transom ladder to make it easier to get back in after a swim. The only disadvantage is the stern is heavy so I put my gear, including a spare gas tank up at the bow. It planes around 16 MPH and tops out with me solo at just under 29 MPH but I'm still breaking it in.

  • @watercool5

    @watercool5

    2 жыл бұрын

    Wow that's like 200lbs hanging off the transom of your 14 footer, bud. Swap em both out for one of these 20hp Merc's and you'll have a better time.

  • @vernshein5430

    @vernshein5430

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@watercool5 It's transom heavy for sure. I keep my spare fuel tank up near the bow and I'm thinking about permanently putting my gas line and battery up front. I like having the kicker though. Even with the reliability of modern outboards, a backup is a good thing plus it trolls slower.

    You can install a underpowered motor on large applicaions, to take the max HP out of that motor need to prop it right to run towards its max wot rpm range factory stated, that's with less pitch props from the ones being factory delivered with which are medium pitched props, only good for break in purposes, once finished need to re prop right that motor or will surely lug it out which is bad. Revving at max wot rpm range will achieve a faster hole shot planing the boat faster if that's possible, if not will achieve a much better faster displacement speed than before at wide open throttle...

    That motor is just barely enough to get around. My 14 ft. Modified v hull, 48 inches wide, had a Chrysler 25 hp on it and it was enough. But, I never got offshore with it. And I never went out in really rough weather. I love it, but, I got sent to Germany for two years. Sold it, and never bought anything as big anymore. Sold the recent open, just a trolling motor to my stepson.

    I had a 2004 G3, 1756dlx. Added two storage lockers and a rod locker. Had a 24volt trolling motor. Had a 1993 2 stroke 25 HP. It ran 22mph, with just me, and a 6.6 gallon fuel tank. When I first got the boat, it had a 2004 4 stroke, 50 HP, and a 20 gallon fuel tank. With just me, it ran 32mph. Above speeds were GPS. Hole shot was about the same, regardless of which engine. I didn't play with the props on the 50hp. Maybe hole shot would've improved. I decided I wanted a fiberglass bass boat, as a project boat. So I sold the G3.

    Not a good idea.. trolling around a lake is one thing. Being in a river with logs / rocks in 4 inches of water is something completely different. You need power to plane your boat as high out of the water as possible. I have 18 foot valco with a 115 merc jet. You can’t use a 40. You would be stuck in every riffle you try to shoot down.
