Microtia or anotia is a condition where a child's ear is partially developed or not developed at all. These conditions mean the child has no ear. Such a case is seen in 1 in every 10,000 children. Luckily, with the advancement of cosmetic surgery, this can be treated through an ear reconstruction surgery. He does this by taking cartilage from the rib cage and molding it to make the ear’s framework. We then place this framework is then under the scalp with surgery. Once this heals, additional surgeries pull the framework away from the scalp and reposition the earlobe while making any other functional decisions that better the result.
As long as the child is between 9-10 years old, this surgery goes off without a hitch and the family can return home once it is complete!
