    Very nice images, and information on how to get them. Think those last few pics at shutter speeds over 1/8000 exhibit 'rolling shutter' due to the use of the electronic shutter. Slightly deformed, but beautiful still.

    Thank you for sharing this great video. The pictures are really impressive. This distortion effect is called "rolling shutter effect" If you use an electronic shutter, the camera will read out the sensor line by line. Pictures of very fast moving objects will be distored.

    I knew about pre focusing on fresh air and about building a perch but restricting access to the "bait" is something I'd over looked. Mike's tips are great shortcuts to help me get better results.

    SUper shots Mike. I have had some success with this method too but I like your idea of reducing the landing site further. The last images with the curved wings at super high shutterspeeds look like the effect of rolling shutter which can be a feature of electronic shutters.

    Those last two images show what is called "rolling shutter". It is interesting, sometimes but it is a defect in the camera's system. I don't understand the details that cause it but I do recognize it when I see it. It was Duade Paton that explained it and he has a program just on that. It has to do with the electronic shutter system I believe.

    Excellent images and great explanation: thank you. I have photographed Goldfinches and Greenfinches flying onto a feeder in the past. They often squabble, with one on the feeder flying to meet another attempting to displace it, and an aerial squabble ensues. In ProCapture I set one edge of my chosen AF mode against the feeder then, with both eyes open (as I would if firing a shotgun), release the shutter as soon as the bird leaves the feeder or I see one coming in. This method works best on a cold, sunny day, as there are more birds and more aerial squabbles.

    Hi Mike, absolutely love your channel and found myself going through your whole catalogue, learning massively from the time and effort you have put into creating your very enjoyable content, I am shooting with a Sony A73 and A7R4 and recently started to explore the video capabilities, I too love slow motion wild life videos, I am retired so have plenty of time to learn and practice, spent quite a lot of time searching for my local wildlife using trail cameras and recently purchased a thermal imaging camera too but more for the dark early winter evenings. Please keep up the great work and many thanks for sharing your vast amount of knowledge and experience :-)

    Hi Mike, another excellent video, I do very similar to you in my back garden, since I went to Olympus I used Procapture High, & manual prefocus, I fire the shutter as soon as the bird leaves the perch and bingo. As you know the number of frames can be tailored and the electronic shutter = no wear and tear on the camera so EM1X is pretty good for this set up. I still have quite a number or images to sift through but not so many as in the old days when I use Canon.

    Since it is a fixed location, why not setup an OCF? That will also help freeze the birds in flight and make them look extremely sharp, even on a cloudy day. Yes, I understand this comes at the expense of burst shooting, but I think you'd still get some excellent results.

    Stunning photos and very helpful advice, thanks. It would be interesting to hear what your ideal aperture is for this kind of work, and, if you have the time, what the main advantages are of an Olympus MFT. My only experience is with Canon mirrorless, and, due to poor technique no doubt, a hit rate so far of about 0.5% with flying birds...

  • @MikeLaneFRPS

    @MikeLaneFRPS

    Aperture will vary depending on how much light is available and how close is the background. I swopped from Canon to Olympus because Canon were slow to take mirrorless seriously. Now they have the R5 and R6 and I would be happy to use either system.

  • @MikeLaneFRPS

    @MikeLaneFRPS

    At 60fps Pro-capture your camera will not C-af. Only s-af will be available. At 18fps you can choose either. Which you choose depends on the subject. A static lizard where you want to capture the tongue flickering out use S-af. If the subject is likely to move C-af.

    With time on my hands and not having the requisite posts to carry the modified bird feeder, I decided to build a rig which I am hoping will work as well as your set up Mike. For the perch, I am using a wooden garden spade - a prop which I have used before in the garden when taking photographs of small birds. I have published my design on Thingiverse www.thingiverse.com/thing:4622814

    Do you recommend shooting in manual so I can stop down the aperture as well to get the whole bird sharp? I would assume an aperture of f/8 or f/11 is needed for such small birds

  • @MikeLaneFRPS

    @MikeLaneFRPS

    Shutter speed has to the priortiy for birds in flight, but if there is enough light yes close the aperture down if you can. It does not matter whether you do this manually or otherwise.

    I am still struggling with this, on my EM1X I tried n tried , cannot get the depth of field enough ( I had to go for f4 on my 300mm Zuiko for enough light) , it is literally razor thin DOF and bird can miss the plane of focus. there has to be a way your friend discovered to solve the DOF.

    Sometimes wide open. other times closed down. Shutter speed is the priority. With the latest camera I have, Sony A1, noise levels are so good shooting at a very high iso's that closing down to f11, f16 will be very possible.
