I am a Japanese old man. Ramen has been eating since I was a child Recently I have said many things with media etc., but you can eat ramen as you like. I am not good at hot and I do not like how to eat like this movie. No sound is produced. It is OK to eat freely for each person's way of eating. There is nothing to worry about.

Bunch of ignorant ethnocentric comments up in here. I've been to Japan 20+ times and the first thing I learned is that when you're not sure how to properly eat something, just watch how everyone else is doing it and do it. No questions asked. When you're a visitor in another country do what is culturally acceptable. Don't be like "Back home its rude to do this & that." Don't fall into that category of "ignorant tourist" who thinks they're better than the host country. Better off not travelling at all if that's your mindset.

You don't even have to have those ego-sensitive comment when you go to other Asian countries such as china, korea, phillippines, vietnam, malaysia, thailand, hong kong, singapore or India. This only matters to Japan sensitive people. I am sorry about the people who had died but the fukushima nuclear disaster radiation polluted islands I am just not dreaming about japan anymore. Specially with your mindset.

If you want to avoid slurping and the soup going everywhere, use the spoon. That is what I've learned. I'm not from a place where ramen is a usual food, but I have seen native Koreans eat it that way. You just place the ramen on the spoon with the chopsticks and shove it in your mouth. I did my research because the mess I left on the table and my surrounding made me go crazy. The spoon way also seemed quite polite to me.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with putting your noodles on the spoon first and eating it in one bite followed by some broth/soup.

It's really not about the soup but the noodles. There's a phobia among the japanese that the noodles will "nobiru" or get soggy and mushy. Eating ramen is considered time sensitive before the noodles lose their texture.

Spoons! Man, that guy is being kind. But it's all regional really. For me, Chopsticks in right hand, bowl in left hand. You should be eating it the same way you would be eating it standing up. And I don't leave the noodles in the air to dry out, slurp the noodles, bring the bowl up to your mouth so there's not broth flying everywhere. You slurp it because it's like Starbucks super hot and you need the air to cool it down. And no you're not supposed to wait cuz the flavor profile changes and also there's like 20 people waiting for your chair. I love that he doesn't use boiled eggs. God, I remeber my mom making Ramen and she would crack an egg on top before serving, the raw egg cooked almost perfectly, that's how hot it was, all the white cooked in the broth but the yolk still creamy. Man, I want some Ramen now.

Learn how things are done traditionally, then do what you want. For me, eating a bowl of ramen that size in five minutes is impossible. First, I'm a slow eater anyway. Maybe it's because I take smaller bites and/or chew more than most people, I don't know, but eating fast is uncomfortable and stressful for me. Second, I'm even slower when the food is very hot (I have to let coffee cool down too). And when food is so hot, the high temperature detracts from the enjoyment of the flavor. Third, eating slowly lengthens the time of enjoyment. Why enjoy the ramen for only five minutes when you can enjoy it for twenty or thirty? Sure, the noodles expand some during this time, but I enjoy them that way too.

I kinda just, eat it? I’ve been doing a 4 year course in Japanese at school and doing that has taught me to just enjoy the food. We just always got told to tell the chef how nice the food was, so that’s what I’ve always done. Just eat your food without being a douche, say ‘Thank you’ profusely and leave a tip.

Actually, about the last part: No tipping in Japan! They just don't do it at all there. If you _absolutely must_ leave a tip, make sure you put it in an envelope first. Leaving money lying around will result in the manager running out behind you to return your money!

I've always wondered: am I committing a "food crime" when I twirl the noodles around the chopsticks? I'm Italian so doing it is spontaneous, but I wonder if my doing it could anger someone or something like that.

  • @petercdowney

I don't think anyone's going to complain about it. As long as you don't stab any food with your chopsticks, you should be fine. I must warn you, however, that it is not practical to attempt to eat ramen in complete silence. Slurping it will facilitate eating it in less than 5 minutes before the noodles get soggy.

Slurping is quite natural, if you grow up eating hot soup noodles. Instead of waiting it to cool down(which the noodles become soggy), you eat it hot, and slurping becomes a natural thing to do, intake air while eating noodles. I don't even have a second thought when I eat hot noodles. Just eat it the way you feel comfortable. I don't know how people say the louder you slurp the more respect you show to the cook, why lol...
