Slug control 100% and most humane

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

See my NEW DIY raised bed and slug control video here:
• Comparing slug control...
This is probably the most humane way to control slugs and barring something unusual it is 100% effective. This video shows how to install and test the electric slug control fence in a raised bed garden. (See also "Comparing Slug Control methods": • Comparing slug control... )
I stapled 2 parallel runs of galvanized wire around the raised bed and connected them to a 9-volt battery.This fence is an improvement over my earlier fences where I used aluminum welding wire. The aluminum wire is more fragile and usually lasts just one year. (You can speed the video up 2X by selecting the little gear symbol at the bottom of the video). Update: I am currently using stainless steel welding wire that is 0.8 mm. Highly recommend this wire as, along with SS staples, you should get years of service. The spool of SS welding wire that I bought was about $45 but I have enough to "last a life time" (length is not stated on the spool). In Canada you can get this at Princess Auto.

    No problem when raining because the electrical resistance between the 2 conductors is still very high and therefore very little additional current will flow between them. I live in a very wet area and the battery lasts all of the growing season.

    Hi Bob, I did it and it just works !!!! It's so simple I can't figure out why its not on the market. Putting the wires on the outer side of the fence is definitely the way to do it: sluggs cant get in but when they get out they end up falling on the outer side. I end up with quite a bit of slime on the wire and it dosen't seem to kill the sluggs. Thank you for your video, its way better than these nasty blue toxic grains

    Nola, beer attracts slugs to the garden as does poison pellets. The electric fence (above) prevents them from entering the raised bed garden in the first place. It is also the most humane idea as the slugs are not harmed as with most all other approaches.

    The small slug was an unintentional player in the video. I believe he made contact with the wires before I arrived and was momentarily stunned or was just laying there enjoying the buzz. Anyway the booger-like slime saved the day for him as it automatically held him in place while he was out and when the big slug disturbed him the string of slime stretched out and gently lowered him down.

    I wonder if it would work to make a frame of 2x4s, on edge, to surround the ground-level bed and apply the wires to its perimeter close to the top edge? Perhaps use 2x6s so that you could sink them a few inches into your soil so the little buggers would be less likely to simply pass underneath...

    Great video. Why didn't someone think of this before...fry the buggers! I have 4 raised beds here in Hamburg Germany and slugs are the bane of my gardening life. The growing season is short enough without donating half to support slug central command. I'm putting my electric fence in next week and will let you know how it works. Of course they have to navigate the salt pellet minefield and the beer moat first but that just thins out the herd. The great thing about your idea is you can install it even if you don't have a raised bed, just ring the bed with 4x2s.

  • @BobKelland

    @BobKelland

    Thanks John - yeah it is so far the only real solution that I have found. Not new though as I had a patent search done more than thirty years ago (still have the docs) and even then someone had the general idea covered... guess with farming type electric fences, etc. nothing here totally innovative. Would like to see how it works for you. I mentioned before somewhere that I cheat a bit at the start of the season by installing a new 9 volt battery and then I put slug pellets (poison) under a board in the raised bed. The idea is to get rid of any slugs that got on board over the winter. After that it is electric fence all the way.

However, when I measure the voltage between the two wires I get 0.5 volts, vs. the 8.5 volts that I get directly from the battery. I'm using 16 gauge galvenized wire. Why is there such a voltage drop? Thank you in advance for your answer.

    Just finished a new raised bed the other day, only ever had one slug try to make it up the legs and into the bed.....but will definitely make one of these deterrents for extra protection. Do you have a different design for veg planted in the ground ?

  • @BobKelland

    @BobKelland

    2 жыл бұрын

    My original raised beds (with the electric fence) were made with 2x10 boards but they proved to be too low as as the surrounding weeds and the veggies grew the slugs had bridges to success. So it is difficult keeping the slugs and snails clear when planted on the ground. Ducks and frogs might well be the best approach.

  • @BobKelland

    @BobKelland

    8 жыл бұрын

    With the described setup just one 9-volt battery will last for the whole growing season so it would be hard to justify the trouble and expense of setting up a solar system (with a rechargeable battery). There is very little current leakage due to rain and moisture so the battery lasts as mentioned so a protective rain shield would be a bit overkill. Nice thoughts though re the project. Thanks.

  • @BobKelland

    @BobKelland

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hi raijinz, I just twist and crimp the wires together. You could also try wire nuts as used with electrical home wiring. Soldering successfully will depend on the type of wire you have used. I am currently using stainless steel and that would be pretty well impossible to solder using ordinary soldering methods. If you used copper wire for the fence should be no problem soldering as long as you can keep the heat at the joint (if it's cold out). Might have some luck soldering galvanized wire but it would also be a challenge. Anyway twisting works good over long term but make sure you keep the battery and fence wire connections inside of some kind of weather protecting box.

    Check with farm supply places or hardware stores. Ask for galvanized wire. Also check the web for more info. Good luck!

    Great idea! I will definitely try this the coming season in my square foot gardens! I have a question though (as an electro noob....) how do you connect the metal wires with the battery? I see you use some sort of snap fastener on the battery but how do you connect the metal wires to the snap fastener?

  • @BobKelland

    @BobKelland

    7 жыл бұрын

    You can find these snap fasteners at electronic supply places. They come with two wire leads that I crimp to the stainless steel "fence" wires around the gardens. The mechanical/crimping type of connection makes a satisfactory electrical connection. Not much sense trying to solder as the stainless steel fence wires would probably make soldering difficult. Twist or crimp them together and it will work.

    I don't know the typical resistance offered by a slug but if you have a multimeter you should be able to set up a quick test. We still have ice and snow here so no slugs around yet.

    You will need to attach a strip of wood all around the steel first. Then the electric fence goes on the wood.

    thank you for the video good idea. i have heard and read as most have that copper deters slugs and snails and was thinking something similar to your idea so i came on youtube to see if there was a video, do you know can one copper wire and one silver wire joined to the battery work and give the same effect?

  • @BobKelland

    @BobKelland

    Yes that will work but bare copper wire will eventually turn brown and then green and may not then have the same electrical effect. I now use fine stainless steel wire. This is available at welding supply outfits.

    Trouble with bare copper is that it oxidizes too quickly and thereby creates an electrical insulation. I tried galvanized steel wire but it fairly quickly rusted in places. Stainless steel works really good and seems to last "forever".

    If you want notification of a slug making contact with the electric fence it might be best these days to rig up a slug presence app (SPA) for your smart phone - would take some thinking and work but might be the best approach.

    I want to try this two wire 9v method but my raised bed is 24'x16' which is 80' perimeter. So do you think the 9v would be enough amperage to be effective or would the voltage drop decrease the strength. Any suggestions would be apprecited.

    Yes that will work fine. There will be more leakage current but the battery will last a long time. Good idea to check it out once in a while though.

  • @BobKelland

    @BobKelland

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hi Karl, No difference electrically so best to check each size for bending as it is necessary to make the wire conform to any dips and bumps around the raised bed structure. I am currently using stainless steel welding wire that is 0.8 mm. Highly recommend this wire as, along with SS staples, you should get years of service. The spool of SS welding wire that I bought was about $45 but I have enough to last a life time (length is not stated on the spool). In Canada you can get this at Princess Auto.

    Hi Bob, I consider building the electric slug fence next season. I’ve read the comments to learn if the fence will work when it rains. But I can’t seem to find the answer. What is you experience with rain? Will the fence keep the slugs out? Best regards / Klaus

    Normal rain over the growing season doesn't appear to have any bearing on the longevity of the battery. One battery typically lasts the whole season. Regards, Bob

However, this device looks like the light at the end of the tunnel so I've just ordered some stainless steel wire off ebay. I'll report back later in the year. Thanks for this! Simon

    It even works better when you connect a condensator across the battery, Running time of battery also increases. There is just one problem with slugs I at first not realized The slugs not only migrate from the outside but a distinct number lives witin the containment and then only Nematodes are helpfull. I had a fine meshed barbed wire blocking out snails but slug can press themselve trough very small mesh So I fight them with electric shocks to keep them out and nematodes for the inside job.

  • @BobKelland

    @BobKelland

    No I haven't tried copper welding wire. Regular copper wire as used in electrical work would likely oxidize and form an insulating layer... not sure if copper welding wire would be the same. Probably would depend on what alloy(s) are involved. One 9-volt battery should work fine even for long runs.
