It's super-effective! Every Pokemon trainer strives to master the type chart and nab those juicy damage multipliers, but at what cost?! Are super effective moves ALWAYS the best choice? Or are there other factors at play? This is mainly a tutorial aimed at helping newer players peek behind the curtain at some spooky numbers and improve their play in challenge runs or competitive matches.

Extra Credits Let's trying to countering nitpicks?! -Why does Tyranitar speak in English when everyone else speaks Japanese? -> He's from Unova (I thought it would be too confusing to have the title and first line in Japanese) - The background is clearly Lumoise City and not Celadon -> It's called ACTING (couldn't find any decent res Celadon city pics) - Yu-gi-oh has "trap cards," not "trump card!!" -> Ok, but what does pot of greed do? (The Japanese phrase I'm responding to is "trump card") -Why does the Bro Science dude turn into Slowking...? -> Because Dom is the KING of gains bro (The slowbro tail would be less visible than the slowking crown) -Why does Captain Erika's dress flicker so much? -> Because she's low on HP after the hyperbeam (Bad greenscreen lighting) -Why was Ttar's HP green even though Solarbeam dropped him to yellow? -> He had leftovers (I pulled Ttar's HP bars from two different fights) - Why is there a cursor onscreen at the start of the Brock fight? -> It's a SwSh credits homage (It's just an OBS capture mistake lol)

I didn't take this class as a freshman at Rutgers in 2014. One of my Professors said that I only needed the Weapon Triangle. I asked about stats and she said "What stats? The Weapon Triangle is all you need!!!" I was able as an senior to convince her when my venusaur survived a viscous ember from a Charizard and I destroyed the Lizard with Outrage. She failed me in Weapon Triangle 401.

Time to make every comment an academic joke
Funny thing is Earl's Academy in Pokemon Stadium 2 actually addresses this, with one of its lessons telling you to actually pay attention to stats and the moves that fit them, and not to just always click the super effective move, using the example of how Tauros doesn't do more damage to Mantine with Electric moves than with its Normal moves despite the X4 super effectiveness. It was a surprisingly good resource, especially in the days before Bulbapedia and Smogon. When I first learned this though was back in Stadium 1, when I was a kid that had only the rental pokemon to use (didn't have my own copy of RBY yet) and was trying to get them all in the Hall Of Fame. I saw Hitmonchan with all his elemental punches, thought "oh he can hit everything super effectively, this will be easy!", and then sent out him first against Lorelei's Dewgong. Clicked Thunder Punch, thinking I had it in the bag.... then it dealt like 15%. Learned a good lesson that day (and never touched Hitmonchan again). Also the Tyranitar acting was amazing.

Honestly, I’ve come to realize my bigger “old man moment” is more that the game gives you so MUCH Exp nowadays that you have no real time or reason to go exploring off the beaten path until you’ve beaten the game, at which point all of those little bonuses are much less exciting. Of course, a Johto tier grind is not fun. But I do think that there should be some actual reward to going “off the trail” for a bit, like how Kanto lets you yank a level 50 Zapdos if you decide you needed to train up after getting slapped by Sabrina. That also makes the game stupidly easy, but you got to go on an adventure for it

@@averytubestudios Yeah, that does play a part, but I definitely prefer those Pokéballs being available in limited supply by the mid game or late game rather than needing to wait until the end. As a whole, though, a game about Pokémon _training_ needs to avoid giving you so much for free that you never need to learn HOW to train. I think Gen V did this reasonably well with Audino and with the sports stadiums, combined with scaled Exp. That way, you don’t HAVE to leave the beaten path if you really don’t want to, but doing so can be very rewarding without making you feel like you’re going to break things in half

Leave "hard pokemon" to the romhacks tbh, it's better that way. High difficulty like kaizo crystal/emeral,rejuvenation instense mode and to a lesser extent reborn is best left to those who choose to take that challenge instead of forcing it as the standard.

Answer: depends what you're doing. For competitive, you usually just want strong STABs and some support moves; certain Pokémon want coverage moves but they've got to be the right ones. For Nuzlockes? You absolutely want a full set of coverage moves. The single-player campaign, you just want to one-shot as many things as possible. You still don't blindly want to click the most super-effective move--a STAB is often better--but you want to know what's the strongest for any situation.

Honestly, it's so great Pokemon tell you about the Base Power and accuracy of every moves! There's so many RPGs that just completely obfuscate this information for you. Like, should I use Flare, Ultima, or Meteor against this enemy? Would Bahamut be more efficient? You just have to try and find out. Should I use Flare Blitz or Close Combat with my Arcanine against this Umbreon? I can answer this question without any extra help. I even know how much percent of their lives the opponent have left! The games being do easy tend to make you forget how convenient the battle system and the UI are. It's a good system! Or at least the basis of a great one!

To break down your final example, I feel like Ember still outperforms Metal Claw, considering you expect no more than 1-2 attacks before healing/switching/fainting: --LOL 5% miss chance --A burn is HUGE. Not only does it halve Onix's Attack and make the return fire a much softer blow, but each burn tick is, in this exchange, effectively a second Ember! This gives you better damage over the course of the fight than a +1 from Metal Claw. --Blaze exists, and if you get a low-HP miss and/or a burn, you can play with fire and do a cool 20% in one hit! (Don't do this.) But yes, just catch a Mankey.

Let's! SE!
Honestly, one of the reasons I love using Quilava in HGSS is that STAB Fire Blast kinda just cheeses things: yeah it’s “Not Very Effective” on a Croconaw, but does that really matter when it’s effectively BP 180 before that message, and as high as effective BP _270_ with Choice Specs? Why would I WANT to use a different move?! Clicking other buttons is overrated, unless those buttons are buttons that make Fire Blast stronger, and thus, cooler Base Power trumps effectiveness when choosing move slots, especially when the “downside” is having a 15% chance to miss, which is a “who cares” moment when the runner up move, Flame Wheel needs 2 turns to even compare to Fire Blast ignoring Quilava’s higher Sp. Atk On the note of “it’s a Johto gym, use whatever” tho, I’d argue the Johto gyms in the remakes add enough extra “oomph” that it’s not _quite_ as simple. Still a hell of a lot easier than Platinum or the Gen V games, don’t get me wrong, but Clair’s Kingdra can absolutely beat up a lot of Pokémon and steal your lunch money if you get unlucky, since it’s running 2 very strong special STABs that nothing in Johto resists both of, and a crit is basically going to 1 shot you, so heal spamming isn’t a safe strategy either. Or maybe I’m just being overly defensive because HGSS was the game that made me REALLY fall in love with the franchise, despite it actually being the _third_ Pokémon game I ever played. Probably just me being defensive, actually. Oh well. Tl:dr: don’t feel too bad if you lose to a Johto Gym leader in HGSS, they like to gamble a lot, and sometimes they get a Royal flush ALSO also, I should have said this earlier, but thank you for the video. Makes me think of Earl’s Pokémon Academy in Pokémon Stadium 2, which also had a few lessons of this sort, along with tests to help you see them in practice

How the hell did she even get her j- oh, right, Nepotism HGSS also added in those juicy rematches to give some of the wimpier bosses a chance to redeem themselves a little. Or, in the case of Pryce, to just be an asshole with What I will now call the Damnoswine: Double Team + Snow Cloak on a team with Permanent Hail. Yeah I know he had hail + cloak in the first round, but at least it was only 5 turns of hail then
In a casual or challenge playthrough, there's so many ways to beat opponents without positive matchups that it's not so important. Even in competitive, the lack of success of Electivire and to some extent Alakazam even when it had the elemental punches shows that type effectiveness is far from the be-all and end-all. Electivire is pretty frail, and it loses speed due to being fatter and bulkier than Electabuzz, but its main problem is its damage output. Its base attack stat is too low for the higher tiers, it has weak physical STAB and coverage, so it can't threaten much even when it gains speed with Motor Drive. It would gladly give up some of its coverage for stronger attacks and higher offenses. Despite a high special attacking stat, Alakazam also usually falls just a bit short of being a hard hitter. Even in generations where it's solidly OU, it's good for reasons other than its power (BDSP is too situational a format being a remake). In RBY, Chansey existed, and its main STAB was resisted by other prominent psychics like Starmie, Exeggutor or Jynx. It didn't hit that hard, its selling point was being a fast special tank that can wear down and cripple others while recovering its own health. In Gen 2, it's infamously broken in-game with the punches, but the stat experience mechanics made everything bulky and the punches were too weak in the first place, whether they came off of base 135 special attack or not. Its best niche was relegated to being just a fast supporter with Encore and sometimes Toxic, because otherwise it was too passive. In Gen 3 it couldn't even do that and completely lost its place in OU. Contrary to popular opinion, it actually had a net buff in Gen 4, gaining stronger attacks in Shadow Ball and Focus Blast, increasing its damage output. It only fell down to UU because the meta improved even more than it did. A lot of people saying how much it would get better with the elemental punches back, but a close look at Electivire would instantly disprove that claim. It didn't get to be a hard hitter not reliant on Focus Sash revenge kills or hazards compensating for its lack of power until it got the mega form, and later Nasty Plot Expanding Force when it lost that.

If you ever want to play a Pokemon game where type effectiveness truly doesn't matter and you should almost exclusively use STAB moves, play the first Mystery Dungeon games. You still get the usual 1.5 STAB, but resisted hits deal 75% for regular, 50% for quadruple resistance and 25% for complete immunity instead. In practice, this means that a resisted STAB move does more damage than a neutral non-STAB move. So unless you play as a Pokemon whose STAB has a lot of resistances, coverage moves are mostly not needed. The more important factor is the way the attack can target, not the type.
@ImportedCheese
Жыл бұрын
I think legends arceus also has funky calculations for STAB and effectiveness
When I was a kid I knew about type effectiveness but I didn't know what the text meant so I'd wonder why it told me a move was Super Effective when it only did 1/4 damage or why it said nor very when it was a one shot

If you played in Gen 1 the prompt itself was also bugged and only considered the target's secondary type if they were a dual type, what a great game
