I teach fluid mechanics to engineers and have for several semesters now at university. I would like to correct something that is said in the video 1-These bubbles do not "rip water apart" 2-These bubbles have very little if any air in them Cavitation occurs in natural systems but even more often (I think) in engineered systems. When fluid velocity increases, the law of conservation of energy in fluids requires that the pressure in the fluid decrease to compensate for the increase in velocity. Every liquid in the universe has a vapor pressure, which is the pressure (particular to a given temperature) that the liquid will establish in the headspace above it. In a marine environment for example at say 22 deg C/71 deg F the vapor pressure of water is about 0.025 atmosphere which is at sounds about 2.5% of the atmospheric pressure we experience on earth's surface. If the claw, bullet, torpedo, submarine, whatever moves fast enough, the local water pressure will decrease. If it decreases why this 0.025 atmosphere threshold (at temperature about 70 deg F), then the liquid water will instantly flash or boil to a vapor. So the bubble the pistol shrimp creates is mostly water vapor (not air), and it does not rip the water apart. (This description usually get most people thinking about a water splitting reaction, which is chemically ripping water apart.) A small amount of water experience a short time period of boiling to vapor (a phase change which is what you do in your kitchen everyday when you boil pasta). As the water velocity around that bubble decreases, pressure around the bubble will increase and forcibly collapse the bubble. If you are curious, this phenomenon is also what can cause pitting in boat propellors and damage in water pumps if they are not designed or run properly to account for cavitation. I appreciate what these guys in the video are doing generally. However (and I have done this too), it is easy to explain science & engineering things incorrectly without realizing it if you don't do a fair amount of research on an unfamiliar topic.

What the heck is almost everyone saying they came from "Project Power"

Are you getting the full effect of the the pistol snap? Would you not need the water pressure of the ocean (or larger tank) to increase the power. It is barley moving some pebbles around. When i vacuum my fish tank there is more kinetic energy. I would be interested in seeing the snap in a much larger tank, like 500 gallons or more.

When you learn the physics behind it , the pistol shrimp is more powerful beneath a large body of water, it snaps its claw at an insane speed creating a ridiculous amount of heat energy up to the temperature of the sun’s surface in that tiny area; this creates the bubble. Now the real reason it’s so effective against its prey is because of the pressure of the ocean that causes the water to instantly rush in to fill the displaced area that was vaporized ... they should’ve made him clap his hands together at least in project power to sort of represent the snapping

I have a question. Does it actually reach that temperature in the tank? I'd think the massive temperature would come from the massive pressure of the ocean, so I'd think a tank would have less pressure, so less heat? Just speculating.

Its such a small amount for such a little amount of time it wouldn't heat up the tank

Djibril Fall thats not what he is asking. I was actually wondering the same thing. They say it can reach 4000 degrees celcius. The question is if it can only hit those temperatures in the ocean because of the massive water pressure. The tank has pretty much zero pressure because of its size.

***** Temperature is directly proportional to heat. That means the increase in heat causes the increase in temperature and vice versa. Insertnamesz / Punocchio I believe the high temperature they are saying is actually the change of temperature with respect to the ambient temperature before shooting, not the net temperature. In other words, pressure doesn't affect this temperature they are referring to, but change of pressure does.

Thanks for the replies all. I guess it comes down to this: Is it the shrimp's attack that physically moves the water quickly, causing a burst of heat, or is it the water returning to equilibrium that causes the heat?

Insertnamesz / Punocchio That's a bit tricky. The heat is produced by sonoluminescence effect which, based on wikipedia, is produced by the collapsing bubble. This implies that after the bubble collapse, heat is produced (correct me if I'm wrong). However, I believe when the bubble is shot, it yields a huge change of pressure that produces extreme heat as well even before it collapses. And just for your information, a mantis shrimp also produces this sonoluminescence effect when punching.

In ww2 the US hid submarines near colonies of these shrimp so they could stay off radar

I imagine that part of your finger would dematerialize given the staggering amount of energy, but with such a tiny contact area, it might just cause a laceration and possibly cauterize the effected area immediately. I'm curious if it's attack partially cooks its prey.

Great movie, hope it gets a sequel.

I had to pause at the chair scene and google pistol shrimp and I tell you I’m highly disappointed compared to what I expected 🤣🤣
