This ammo diameter discussion reminds me of the air rifle .22 vs .177 debate. Its .177 for me because despite the alleged lower "stopping power", the flatter trajectory is all important because you can have all the stopping power you want but if you can't hit the animal because of mis calculated hold over it counts for nothing. Enjoying these discussions gents.
Do you have a P.O. Box 📦 so fans can send you cool cattys accessories or ammo? Would be interesting to see you test what the viewers sent in 😊
Super to listen to on the drive home from work! Love the discussion on 8 mm steel for hunting. Spot on! Thanks again for another great episode, my friend!
Another good episode. Glad it's not just me struggling with lead moulds.
I never thought I'd be shooting 8mm steel but that's what I shoot 95% of the time. I'm still a lead shooter for hunting but I have come down from 10mm lead to just under 9mm. I don't think the ammo weight and trajectory really matters that much as you get used to what you shoot, the hold over etc. And I think the difference in draw weight between a 8mm steel setup and a heavier lead setup is hard to compare because generally people shoot hundreds of shots with light setups but with a heavier lead setup that's just for hunting you might only take 20 shots all day so the fatigue in the fingers isn't the same. The main thing I believe is beneficial with 8mm ammo is how flat it feels in the pouch ! Especially with a pit pouch. 8mm in a pit pouch just feels like a flat tap in your fingers, really good for a clean release imo. New pit pouches aren't the best. Too stiff for me but you get a nice old one that's softened= bob on. The other thing I've realized is when 8mm steel ammo started taking over and faster bands the catapult itself has had to change. 100mm frames was the norm when I started shooting and that's what I still shoot for heavier setups as your anchor is naturally lower with a heavy ammo and the wider frame just seems to suit that some how but with 8mm steel ammo frames started shrinking. 80.85mm frames are pretty common to see now. 90mm is probably the most common I'd guess with most anchoring higher on the face. I agree time must be spent "purposefully" tuning a setup that works just for you. You can give guidelines but the time must be invested to fully understand why a setup is working and how to adjust is if needed. The finer details! My 9mm lead setup is - gzk black. 0.76 28-18mm taper and a HH. Anchor to the corner of the mouth. This setup is set in stone and never changes. My 8mm steel setup changes all the time lol. Different bands and tapers but my go to setup if I was giving a guideline is BsB 0.50 20-10mm taper and a 90mm frame of some sort. Well that's my ten pence worth. Good videos mate. Phip 👍
Another great video, loving this series.
Brilliant guys. You have taken it to the next level.❤
Hey guys, another great episode! Me being an avid muzzleloading enthusiast, I already had all the round ball casting equipment so naturally when I got into slingshots, I just cast up a bunch of .350" balls out of a double cavity mold and that worked for awhile. I would spend hours casting though as I was using way more out of the slingshot than my rifle. I bit the proverbial bullet and got one of the 18 cavity 00 molds and while it was finicky as heck when I first started using it, it has really come into its own and can sit down and cast hundreds of balls at a time. If you do get one, you will definitely one one of the bottom pour pots and heat really is your friend. I use a little pair of side cutters to separate the balls as they cast in a string of 3 then put them in a rock tumbler for a couple of hours to smooth them out. Luckily in my area, they still use a lot of lead tire weights and I was able to score about 300 pounds of them for free. That's a lot of shooting!
You could cover hold over, hold under 6 o'clock hold etc, for those that don't know much about it.
Been enjoying listening to these yarns while I've been working. Alot of it is very relatable for me and I'm also learning stuff I didn't know. You are both very good at explaining stuff in a way that I can understand. Even if I don't understand the accents 100% of time😆. From a kiwi living in North East Scotland.
Another great video lads👍🏻
Another top episode, 8mm is the best around imo 👌🏻 it's nice to hear conversations I have with my close mates also. Top work Chris 👊🏻

@SkywalkFPV
11 ай бұрын
@@qaching Well it might be doable when hitting vitals, but is not consistent enough like the blunt impact hunting ammo types - they mostly use some bigger and heavier lead for hunting and thick band setups.. However 8mm can be considered the best all-round cost efficient ammo type for shooting targets close and even long range most comfortably with lighter band setups, you will also see this in shooting competitions.. The properties of steel also have some benefits over lead, like for example being environment friendly and does not reshape like lead so that makes steel more reusable (but it does ricochet more) and steel has magnetic properties for easy collecting and drawing methods.. Cheers!
Another ep showing the true heart and soul of the sport💪 getting another camera capable of capturing shooter and catch box would be amazing. it be class to see youse trying out crazy setups
Thanks for the sharing guys🤝😍👍
Most informative and enjoyable, thanks for posting.. 👍

I also really enjoy 8mm steel. I found your video because all the forums look to be telling me I am doing something wrong. I came to my setup by testing/finding out myself as you suggested here. Thanks for reinforcing. I also really enjoy the sport. Blasting something directly in front of my isn't fun. A distant headshot through the brush as you've suggested can't be beat.
I’ve had that same issue with sniper sling black .7 recently. Broke even before putting the pouch on
Man, I wish I was slingin when you aired this episode. I'm late to the show, but this was such a a good talk. Thanks bros
Hi The new GZK green translucent .45 is awesome, taper 18.12 with a 8mm steel. Great elongation. Much better than .50 👍
Thank you, boys 🙏 Been feeling a bit low lately. Watched all 5 vids of this series today. Perked me right up 👍😊 Would love to see you two heading to the woods for a day with multiple thin band rolls and then cutting and fitting (length/tapering etc.) to try to dial in full long draw / butterfly on a 40mm spinner. Fun experiment. Pick the distance(s). The craic would break the caternet. 😊🔥
Good clear info there lads thanks
Great information!
Hi Chris was watching some of your videos and the ones putting the darts in wood what i did mate was i collected cardboard put it in a tub of hot Water with some PVA glue knocked up a bit of wood for a frame just put it down on the flags in yard then layered the cardboard in it made a brilliant target then put some circles on it it's been left out in the rain if anything it's better swollen out more softer
I actually think u are now my favourite catty shooter and content is great 👌💯
Brilliant watch again
Great show..
Great chat guys. I remember that squirrel 😂
Another class episode lads, this podcast was a great idea I'm loving it
Absolutely great work on this series lads really enjoying the mix of stories and discussion. Questions I was thinking about I've never shot in a comp myself but do you think there is a certain shot in a comp that tells you how good a shooter is . And also is there anything you would like to see added to a shoot. And instead of distance what do you think changing it to say everyone shooting the same set up in thickness and taper and ammo would be like Keep up the good work
You were saying about working through an issue when you was releasing the shot too soon without taking the time to hold it longer and properly aim? Can you tell us how you worked through this please as its something ive been facing myself for a while that keeps coming and going . Thanks, great content.
Another great one, I am thoroughly enjoying this series. It seems a little strange to be here at home on the west coast of Canada and also sitting at a campfire in Ireland with you. I recently have been watching a channel on KZread, "ATO", and noticed that the gentleman, who is a great shot, places his anchor spot first and then pushes out his catapult hand. I gave this a try and within two days my group size on paper got noticeably smaller. Anybody else have thoughts on this? For me it seems easier to get to a consistent form. Thank you for posting.

Great video lads, I know what your saying about Gzk green. I had some 18 months ago and it was awesome, bought some recently and it's terrible, I vant even give it away
I wonder if 8mm lead would be preferred over 9.5mm steel for hunting impact wise.. I understand why you guys like 8mm steel for hunting from purist point of view, only when having great accuracy and clean game to shoot with high chance of hitting vitals.. The lightweight draw and even cost efficiency makes sense and being environment friendly, but somehow I want to believe 8mm lead might be better for hunting than steel because the possible more blunt impact while still being somewhat on the lightweight side of ammo and compact.. Though 8mm lead might not be the most common, but I have this philosophy also taking this video into thought: "What's the best slingshot ammo for squirrels and pigeons"
Thanks Chris for such an informative video. Please keep them coming for they are very enjoyable for slingshot shooters. Jack
Well done. 👍
Another great video Well done lads 👌.. Just a topic I'd like to hear any advice on... That's how to try to get close to your game.. ie stalking rabbits wind in your face clothing Bush cover.. and also overpowering your ammo creating band slap and scaring game before contact... Fair play to you guys for putting the effort into sharing your experiences and knowledge.
@kenferguson2095

Hi id say movement and wind are the most determining factors, always wind in your face and if that means going the long way round then so be it as for movement I only stalk when the rabbits are feeding and stop when they stop because they are watching you and take it slow you'd be surprised how close you can get oh and don't make eye contact, also don't skyline yourself have a backdrop behind you, you could also work in pairs
8mls all the way as you say clean miss or clean kill crissy boy. And the line of trajectory is second to none.🔥👌
Funny as fk lads and informative can't wait for the next one 😀
Catty Shack swears by 11mm steel ammo with 0.8mm bands with 27/22mm tapers. He's killed stuff (if i remember correctly) over 100m away with it.
Any thoughts about Snipersling Black 0,7 with 20-10 taper ? I made a video two years ago with 0,7 Black and active dimensions were 155-21,5-10. Fast setup.

Thank you so much for covering the topic. I appreciate it beyond words. One question I still have. You keep saying speed..... Speed kills. So what speed do you try to obtain with your 8mm hunting set ups?
@kenferguson2095
Жыл бұрын
Hi probably 300 fps, which is very achievable with todays elastic, 10mm tappers seem to be the sweet spot for this
.7 snipersling black heavy 8 mm setup has serious power but I find loss of accuracy due to fatigue after 50 shots compared to lighter bands say .6 20 12 I personally don't think the extra power is needed on the .7 unless u use it for 9.5 steel
Good video got a question tho where do you get your paracord from I want to buy some for my wasp catapult to put through the end but I can’t find any paracord for a reasonable price? 👍🏽🔥
I recently got some GZK green for my 9.5 set up. Must agree with you lads, Pure slash compared to what it used to be. Not the same quality.
Yup I was a 10mm lead guy, I have recently switched to 9.5 steel but you guys have me ordering some 8mm. What you're saying makes sense, I mainly hunt squirrels and those little bastards are tough. It basically takes a headshot even with 9.5 to reliably put them on the floor, so why not just go with 8mm and have better trajectory, more ammo in your pocket and use less rubber. It makes sense to me.

Will 11mm steel kill with a body shot squirrel?
You have a good thing going here throughly enjoyed it. I have been at this a couple of years and still trying to master accuracy. I just have a few shots here and there and try and carry the catty with me at all times and take a few shots at can lids or what ever. If I put up the catch box I find my first two or three shots are good and I think right I got this sussed. Then I start thinking and trying to recreate what I just did and it all goes to cock. I am finding things going much better with the lighter bands Precise Gen3 .65 OTT 23/18 . Keep them coming guys its great

Do your catch box sessions like reps and sets in the gym, 3 sets of say 10 shots with a break in-between sets but try and be a strict on form as possible when doing your sets, fatigue can play a major part in sloppy technique and you'll only drill bad form into yerself as a result trying to chase it

Hard thing to do but try not to overthink it, You also need to practice the mindset
Chirs.. you place gkj on a petestal n rightfully so.. but check for videos of Rufus Hussy on here ive seen 4 n this man was truly a gifted man with a slingshot he made over 10 thousand natural forks in his lifetime.. gave n sold them.. i wish if i could have met one shooter ever.. it could have been him... he is the reason i bought an axiom champ n started shooting.. wish i could ever be that naturally dead on...
I was out deer hunting today n it was a few degrees below freezing I had the sling in the pocket had squirrel around me n along the lines of the hand warmer thing.. i had gloves on.. n i had never attemted to load a slingshot with gloves before..lol. well in cold weather i think if attempting slingshot hunting a good muff would be the ultimate way to go... keeps sling n hands warm n ready.. fingerless gloves with full thumbs just isnt happening lol
Im still using 9.5 but gunna buy 8mm next time I need some 😊
🔥🔥🔥👍
I got some dogey snipersling black .5 last week that just keeps snapping. Put me right off them ones. Back on precise green and 1632 tubes.
Have you tried shooting tungsten steel?

Hey when you guys making the next episode ?
36 cal swaged round balls from hornady are slightly over 9mm and 13 dollars a 100.. perfectly round n they don't deform easily... I've tested them on quarter inch steel plate... hardly a flat spot on them to my amazement...

Crossbow isn’t archery. It’s more like shooting a muzzleloader, not a bow. You don’t have to aim the same. You don’t have to get within the same range. Rest of the pod aside, that part he claims makes no sense
