Pulled an inner CV on a 2005 Accord V6 coupe passenger using this method after attempting prying for hours and having the car on jack stands for a week. Took 3 tugs, not too much force needed, the prying wasn't working to well as the passenger inner has a space inbetween the end of the connecting joint and the outer axle. Did more damage to my exhaust mounts than prying on the inner cv in this case I would def recommend picking up a slide hammer+ this tool or an actual CV axle pulling y fork you can all get on Amazon/ ebay. Thanks Brian for the help 5 years later and this video is still doing its job :)
Tried to get that inner CV whatever its called out of the transmission for at least 4 hours. Watched your video and it took just minutes once I set it up. Thank You very much!!

+Jon King Welcome Jon!
Thanks Brian, Always enjoy your videos - you've saved me hours of labor on my cars. When faced with a similar issue in the past, I drilled a hole in the old axle boot which was stuck in the trans. I then attached a chain and weight to the end and gave a yank. As the chain snaps taught, it pulls the old axle right out. The old axle is trashed anyway no harm in drilling a hole in it. Thanks again for the videos.
Great tool! I have been a technician for over 38 yrs and I can tell you that we always need to be able to make our own tools. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a million briansmobile1- this video was 5 years ago and still getting back yard mechs out of very bad jams. Almost had no car for work tomorrow. Used your vid and it worked in 2 minutes. About the adapter - I couldn't find one in stores anywhere - automotive, hardware stores - if anyone did have one it was probably part of a set that cost hundreds. I didn't have time to wait to order online - so I made my own adapter at a local plumbing store. I used a 3/8" x 1/4" reducer that is normally used for pipe fitting (3/8" goes on the slide hammer). I then put an open ended M12-1.75 rod that screws into the adapter (1/4" side) and the other side screwed into the vise grips (hence needing an open ended rod). It probably isn't as sturdy as the custom made adapter in the video, but it did the trick and the CV axle popped right out, and it only cost $5 bucks. Autozone rents the slide hammer for free but no adapter. Thanks For the added info I'll be assembling this tool tomorrow using the same parts you used here.
Great tip and time saver for that inevitable day! LOL! Eric at ETCG, just gave you a great shout-out on the FATR. Well deserved!! Welcome all ETCG fans! Brian's videos are filled with knowledge and useful experience!!
Thank you very much Brian. I made the tool today (15 min.) and used it to remove rear cv axle on my RZR. Worked like a charm.
Great Help, I had a problem on my Dodge Van, Cut down the shaft on my dent puller, re-threaded the 7/16 shaft, screwed into the vise grip, gave it one yank and the 2 hours wasted last night, was solved in one second. Thanks for your video, you saved the day.
Thanks Brian! I made the tool yesterday, and it helped me remove the driver's side half shaft on a 1997 Mercury Tracer!
Absolutely a lifesaver. I made the tool to pull a passenger side axle out of a TL. Before the video, I couldn't get the goddamn thing out for nothing. Worked great. Thanks again. A total lifesaver.
Brian--many thanks! You're a life-saver! Just getting into tinkering with auto repairs--first CV joint (Corolla) and everything came to a screeching halt when the inner joint wouldn't pop out. Saw your video, bought a slide hammer after finding out it had an adapter that fit my vice-grips and did what you did and it came out on the second try. Thanks a bunch!!

InstaBlaster.
Very innovating . Old Toyotas are notorious for inner cv joint trouble . I have removed a few with a simple claw hammer.
Another MacGyver. Nice going. I hate it when people say they can't do it. And what's worse is when they say they haven't tried it.!! Nothing is impossible. It just takes a Brain,,,,,,,,,, in this case, a Brian !
Brian, really like your videos. Straight to the point no bs. Also entertaining . Came across this video and the tool really works. Well I modified it a little. I had a small dent puller and luckily the threads went right into my vice grip.. the threads were not long enough so I filled in the gap with a small round piece of metal. I tried to get out cv cup for over 2 hours made the tool and in 5 seconds right out no problem. Thanks.
This saved my ass at 1am. I cannot thank you enough. You are the man!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! It took me more time to build the jig for my slide hammer than it to get the part out. Great idea.
Could not get the passenger side off my 2005 Honda Odyssey. I spent 6 hours trying to find a way to get it out. Turns AutoZone loans a tool (for free) that is like the letter "C" that slips around the back of the cup and attaches to a slide hammer. Did in 1 minute what I could not in 6 hours, got the damn thing out. I was desperate bro. If I hadn't found the other tool I would have definitely tried this. Going to keep it in the memory bank for the next time I need a grabby slide hammer thingy. Good job man.
Brilliant you are ! I worked about an hour and no go with a punch. I then bought a Harbor Freight slide hammer and the adapter fit the thread in my vice grips. Three slide pulls and it came off easily
Thanks Brian this is fantastic tool idea can't wait to try it!!!!!!!
Dealing with the same issue on the same car. Just got back home with a new slide hammer 😃
Great video. You saved me so much time. It started out as a couple hour project on my Accord and itturned into a 3 day project. I wish I had watched this video sooner. The principles are solid! I had a much smaller pair of vice grips laying around (I would've bought a bigger pair, but I wanted to see if I could make it work with the pair I had). I went to AutoZone (many parts stores have them) and got the slide hammer rental (free). Then I went to Lowe's and bought a threaded rod (bring in your vice grips to fit them - mine was maybe 1/4" and it worked), a washer and a nut. I spent $3 using your method. I can only imagine how much more a shop would have charged for "broken cv joint removal labor." Mine was not nearly as beefy as yours and it worked in 2 bites (once the vice grips were properly affixed). I did not weld anything. Thanks again!
Perfect tool and technique.
Just watched a review of an OTC slide hammer kit and they include a vice grip adapter. I bet someone is getting rich from your idea. Anyways, great channel keep the videos coming.
I just did this on my 94 RED Celica GT!.....I tried every tool and hammer but there is little room to grip the bell or swing the hammer. Finally found that a crowbar with the curved end and nailpuller fit the bell and you can strike the curve with a BFH....and POP! it came free.....I have got to make a tool like your slidehammer-grip, great idea!
One at home...Love it!
I made my own slide hammer with vise grips. I took a 4ft 7/16 threaded rod, 1/2 washer, 7/16 nut and 5ib slider. threaded the vise grips on one side, slide the hammer on other then put the nut and washer on and got it off within 2 mins.
Thanks- I know I'm not awesome, but I keep trying in hopes I will be some day.
This is ingenious! The vid was very helpful, although I went a different route. Thanks.
Nossa oficina foi presenteada com este KIT 17 PC. SLIDE HAMMER KIT, pelo vídeo tenho certeza que será muito útil e vai agilizar o trabalho de minha equipe.
Im having same issue. Nice to see you thinking...its a great idea!!
Great Idea!! I got $5 in a generic set of vice grips and a nut. Beat the hell out of the cv joint remover that I couldn't get behind the joint. Or Ford's tool which requires the removal of the passenger side joint to use. Thanks for posting.
well done brian ,a really smart invention.
great video, gave me a great idea! Instead of creating an adapter to fit a vise grip I looked through my V.G for one with the same thread.. voila worked like a charm... Thanks for the insight!!
dude thats pretty damn clever good job! if i had thought of that when replacing my cv axles 2 weeks ago i wouldnt have had half the struggle lol
Love the video, im actually dealing with the same issue except on a Hyundai
That is one sweet tool, millions of uses I'm sure.
Nice job Brian as ever !!!!!.....great help as I am about to attempt this job so every once of info is a bonus, love it man. Thank you so much
@watcbd Thanks. I really like it. It's also great for pulling fence, wire, nails, and any thing else you want to yank on.
wow brian another cool tool you rock amigo thanks
Me alegro de que lo encontró. De nada.
Great video made the tool got after 3rd pull thanks for the idea great time saver worked like a charm
Great idea. I have an adjustable pry bar that usually works. I'll be making one of these now for the real stubborn ones. GM 4x4 drivers side axles are the worst to get out. I've had to remove the diff and split the case on a few.
That is sweet, going to make that attachment when i get to work
man, I could have used this yesterday....brilliant answer...I ended up leaving the stuck half in trans and reassembling the new shaft to the stuck cup part..seems to work so far....lol...don't know if that's ok to do but we will see....thanks for sharing
thank you. this will help me with removing my stuck half shaft.
Thanks- that's awesome- really adds character. I did another video like this for a Subaru crank tool with a video contest- check out the video responses. People came up with some really cool stuff!
Pure genius
very ingenious! my tool box has lots of wrenches and hand tools that my dad and brother bent and otherwise modified to do a specific job. they have both passed away so now i have all these weird looking tools and i don't know why they look like that! doesn't matter. i wouldn't part with any of them. i really like your slide hammer mod.
Thanks
Awesome tool.
great idea great job
thanks a million for a brilliant presentation. I was initially at wits end relevant to removing one from my turbo mazda. With this said, I am off tommorrow to purchase the slide hammer
Way to go Chris!
Love the vids Brian, thanks for sharing you expertise on repair. I work on my own stuff but usually it turns into a F word hate GM fest. LOL
lol @ submarine sonar! Thnx for the vid!
beautiful how it works i got mine done first hit came off easy , after i hit myself with pry bar couple times
Sweet Idea buddy.
I had to fabricate a tool to pull the axle on my Plymouth Voyager. I used a long piece of angle iron (bed frame) with a piece welded to the end to hook over the fat part of the axle at the transmission. In my case, there was just enough room to get something between the axle and the trans case. On the other end of the angle iron, I welded a piece that I could whack with a hammer. I also used a long worm-gear clamp to hold the tool so it wouldn't slip off the axle. I could modify my "tool" to adapt a slide hammer.
i made one (before i saw this) with the standard large size vise grips and a slide hammer type dent puller from auto parts store. it threaded straight into the vice grips. i had to put a spacer in the threaded area of vicegrips because my threads on the dent puller were only an inch or so long. i used an old valve core from a laen mower tire that was laying on the ground. then some duck tape (only 1.5 wraps) to keep the vicr grips together. 4-5 hard whacks on the slide and my rav4 was free!!!
super cool tool
justo lo que estaba yo buscando. thanks!!!!!
Great idea
You're welcome Kyle!
So need one, nice mod. Blessings
Worked for me 👍
nice brian!
@xwmmyster I generally don't repair them any more. Usually if a boot fails and is caught before it splits full round you can do them with successful result. Otherwise the double threat of lubrication loss and inclusions of dust and dirt cause irreparable decline in the balls and races. Once initiated the decline continues with or without a proper boot on.
Eso va a funcionar. Mientras que la parte que quedó en la transmisión es buena se le multa. I gotcha brother!
The Harbor Freight slide hammer is about half the Amazon price and comes with several attachments. Not a vice grip attachment though. Your adaptation of vice grips is excellent and the way you did it, it can still be used as common vice grips. Score.
I suspect that vice grip tool end for a slide hammer would have a lot of uses beyond yanking cv cups
Best I'v seen two thumbs up.
u made a good tool
GOOD JOB AMIGO AND VERY GOOD ESPANOL JAJAJA SALUDOS BRIAN!!!
Thanks!
@vipermech I love mine. I use it quite a bit.
Welcome Allan!
saved my life man
Oriely sells a tool called the CV axle popper. You could try that.
@Romulan112 The only other option on this was a long chisel and a hammer.
You're welcome!
@spelunkerd To each their own. There's no wrong way if you like it and it works for you. ; )
@findtmoon Good idea. Thanks
Maybe so.
@2LateIWon Thanks
Nice very creative
I made one of these last month and it works great. Jody at weldingtipsandtricks does a modification of this by welding the bar of a slide hammer to the back of the grip, so it's more in line with the jaws. He feels you get a better straight line pull with that. But the disadvantage of his method is that the tool can't be easily stored in a toolbox, and it can never be screwed apart to use components for other jobs. I like the way you did it because of better versatility.
Clever!
yep i also use them for dents and steering lock breaking if i cant change it normaly
Nice job. You do not need three prong to huck and pull by slide just use home made vice grip and .i may try my car very soon
nice . got one were axle snapped
@1elAguila Thanks
man with the plan, put you and eric the car guy, scotty kilmer all in one pot then you got the most auto info you need
I LOVE THE VIDEO....You are a JOY TO WATCH....FUNNY! This will work on a 1997 Rav 4 Toyota right?
es un tornillo de la misma rosca de el ajustador de las pinzas soldado a una tuerca que coincide con la rosca de la punta de el martillo.
whats your take on repairing cv boots? is it worth it? what about the quick fix booth that comes in two piece? would you do one if you have time to show us? i like your style. keep up the good informative videos.
No es un adaptador que es una tuerca soldada en el tornillo de banco, mordazas. Creo que la tuerca está fuera de una articulación de rótula.
You're welcome
omg thank you.
I do it i weld the nut in bolt and works perfect thanks, im change the new oil seal but is leaking how do u fix the problem
very smart tool. now patent it and sell it :)
